Soi Thai Restaurant, The Waterfront@ Desa Park City: Grand Launch of an Authentic Thai Restaurant!

Thai Cuisine has always been one of my favorite haunts! The balance of sweet, savory, spicy and sour essence of Thai cuisine is simply alluring and addictive for me. Once I start savoring, I just could not get enough of the kick that follows… J

The post is a bit late as I had attended the grand launching of a new Thai restaurant near my place at The Waterfront, Desa Park City a few months back. Nevertheless, I definitely felt that this quaint restaurant is worth the mentioned as the dishes served are scrumptious with a great poise of fundamental Thai flavors. Soi Thai Restaurant, a new member of the Pulai Group, features authentic Thai dishes concocted by a Thai chef and his team. The menu consists of the fundamental Thai dishes with a few additions of more unique Thai dishes that are uncommon to our country.

Soi Thai has a lovely brightly colored décor of shades of pink, purple and orange, brightening up the whites while enhanced by traditional Thai figurines and other artifacts. A sense of coziness reflected nicely against the whole contemporary ambience in this 62 seats restaurant. I heard they are also available for private functions.

The launch initiated with the performance of two grand Lions to grace the event and to bring lots of good luck to Soi Thai! I thoroughly enjoyed the lion dance performance as there were certainly a lot of graceful stunts and poses from this team.

The ribbon cutting ceremony were inducted by PJCC managing director, Jacqueline Mah and Pulai Group director, Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Lian Chin Boon assisted by two lovely ladies dressed in Thai silk.

Now comes the best part of the event… FOOD!

Spicy Creamy Tom Yam Soup with Prawns was executed to my liking perfectly! I like Tom Yam soup with a slight creamy edge and this one was kick-up with a piquant spicy and sour flavors of lime, lemongrass, chili, onions and more. I had two bowls of this soup. There is also a clear version with seafood for those who prefer the white Tom Yam. Individual bowls or large portions in fire pot are also available.

Thai cuisine is famous for salads so it’s no surprise that Soi Thai featured a Green Papaya Salad that day. It’s quite difficult to find a good papaya salad here as most restaurants tend to serve mango salads instead. Crunchy strips of green papaya is accompanied by long beans, tomatoes, dried shrimp, bird eye chilies, peanuts and loads of garlic. Spicy and sour with a great crunch factor, I had quite a bit of this despite its garlicky aroma and heat level.

Appetizers like Thai Spring Rolls and Fish Cakes faired decent.

Another favorite of mine was the Minced Chicken with Thai Herbs or more commonly known as ‘Larb’. While I had savored many versions of Larb done with other meats like pork, duck and even beef, the chicken one was lip-smacking good! The minced chicken salad was amped up with loads of herbs, lime juice and chilies bring the fundamental Thai flavors to a harmonious sensation. I like the distinctive flavors of mint and shallots in this salad!

My least expectation of Deep Fried Seabass with Thai Sweet Chili was skillfully raised as the pieces of fish were still crispy despite it being coated with the sweet chili sauce. Simple and quite delightful!

Curries… the ever popular Green Curry Chicken and another upcoming star of Red Curry with Roasted Duck were sampled that day. The creamy green curry was full of spices but not spicy at all. I prefer the red curry as it has more bodied to the flavors boosted by Thai basil and soft chunks of eggplant!

Thai Fried Rice was fluffy and aromatic from the eggs. Yum!

What I do rave is the Nam Prik Kapi, a fermented shrimp paste sambal, that was as pungent as it could be with tiny crunchy baby eggplants and explosive looking chili padis. Go easy with this potent sambal as a little goes a long way with raw vegetables! Thai Sweet Chili Sauce and Chili Padi with Soy Sauce were also present that day… J

Closing our food sojourn that day was two desserts, Sweet Pumpkin in Coconut Milk and Tapioca in Coconut Milk. I took the easy route and combine both into one serving. I prefer the pumpkin for its creamy and sweet flavors over the tapioca. Our spicy meal was extinguished with Pandan Leaf Juice and Tamarind Juice!

Soi Thai showed great potentials of authentic Thai cuisine with beautiful flavors. Despite the buffet portions served that day, the quality and taste are perfectly executed. Soi Thai faired decent in the price range for its dishes and for that ambience and quality. During this time, I have actually gone back for dinner there with my family and the food quality still taste as good as I have had it during the launch. I cannot wait to go back to try their Thai Betel Leaves Roll, Spicy Pomelo Salad, Grilled Beef, and Pad Thai!
