Chatz Brasserie, Parkroyal KL: Check Out Hawker A-Fair at the Heart of the City!

A Truly Local Experience with ‘Hawker A-Fair’ in the Heart of the City!

As the sun sets in the heart of the bustling city of Kuala Lumpur, Chatz Brasserie sets up its delectable live stations of local hawker fare in its dinner buffet. Chatz Brasserie presents a truly local experience in March and April with its ‘Hawker A-Fair’ buffet dinner where diners get to savor a Malaysian culture of hawker cuisine prepared by the chefs a la minute at the various live action stalls. This is the place where traditional hawker fare meets hotel congeniality!

Hakwer-style food, or more often known as street food, is a huge favorite in our Malaysian culture. Malaysians are perfectly comfortable with indulgence of sumptuous food at any place and time as long as the food is scrumptious… winks! For those who prefer the comfort of a lovely air-conditioned ambience and personalized service, then check out Chatz Brasserie at their promotion this month. Choices are plenty and one will certainly need a game plan to try out everything at Hawker A-Fair!

My game plan to start out with hawker fare went out the window when I caught sight of the glorious Seafood on Ice display at the buffet station! Doesn’t this make you salivate? J

Poached Chilled Whole Scallops in shell, Chilled Mussels and Chilled Flower Crabs was an oceanic’s dream. I simply enjoyed my chilled ocean fare with a squirt of lemon juice and some tartar sauce.

The assorted Ulam-Ulam Mentah dan Rebus and Sambal Belachan, Tempoyak, Budu and Cincalok together with the array of various Salted Fish and Kerabu Salads had me sneaking in a bit of vegetables with the pickled fish simply because it was just too irresistible!

Cold Cuts and assorted western salads are also available for those who prefer a western touch of appetizers and salads before the hawker feast begins.

Let’s hit the Live Stations where the hawker fare is prepared to your preference and serve hot from the stove!

My first stop was an all-time Malaysian favorite… Satay! There is just something so tempting about skewers of meat grilled on coals and doused liberally with a lovely marinade while flames go up at the slightest drops of oil, scenting the meat with an intoxicating aroma of spices. Juicy chicken, beef and lamb satays graced the station with the essential peanut sauce and ketupat. Well marinated with a natural sweetness of spices, I wished for more stomach space for these skewers please!

I hit the soup station for some soothing broth and found three authentic soups featured in the form of Sup Tulang, Sup Kambing and Sup Ayam. Sampled both Sup Tulang and Sup Kambing and went back for more later on. Simply beefy and robust, the soups were aromatized with loads of spices and earthy meat flavors.

Usually I avoid rice in a buffet but as my other foodies kept raving about the roasted meats, I gave in and tried the Roasted Duck and Chicken with some chicken rice. The roasted duck was simply scrumptious and the ginger and chili sauce provided was a great boost to the overall dish. Chicken faired mediocre… go straight for the duck!!

My weakness for oysters had me at glee when I spied Oyster Omelette or ‘Oh Chien’! Thumbs up for the chef who dishes up a plate of Penang style oyster omelette for me as it had a good balance of potato starch and egg. Others seemed to think it’s weird that I like the potato starch but I insisted that this is how it’s done in Penang. You can let the chef know what you prefer or else let the chef do his thing! Delicious as I almost finish this whole plate by myself… dangerous dish to be set in front of me!

Char Koay Teow gets debated in every hawker conversation I know! This one was no difference… I simply think its how one prefers on the taste and texture of the dish. The fried noodles fared average for me as I prefer only Koay Teow but since we are sharing to save stomach space, it’s decent enough for me. J

Another synonymous hawker dish from Penang is the Penang Prawn Mee or Hokkien Mee. Yellow noodles bathed in a prawn stock and topped with bean sprout, Kangkung leaves, prawns, egg, fried shallots and the essential chili paste. Not too bad as the prawn flavors are definitely present while the chili paste is quite addictive. Asam Laksa, Mee Rebus, Curry Mee and Wanton Mee are also available on rotation daily.

A Popiah girl, I will take it fresh or fried! There is just something about popiah that makes me go nuts as the juicy shredded yam bean cooked till soft and sweet is snugly wrapped in a thin popiah skin while fried shallots and other condiments brighten up the flavors. Equally addictive is the fried version which I enjoy for the crispiness and juicy textures.

Also making a presence was Yong Tau Foo with Chee Cheong Fun. Assorted varieties of vegetables and bean curd puff were stuffed to the max with fish paste. Enjoy this with the sweet dark sauce and chili sauce.

Craving for a little Roti? Roti Prata, Thosai, Murtabak and Dhal is available fresh to order for that savory satisfaction of dunking pieces of torn up breads into a spicy curry.

Take a stroll inside the restaurant and there is also an array of international and local main dishes in the hot warmers featuring Spaghetti Aglio Olio with Seafood, Mexican Baked Fish, Roasted Lamb with Garlic and Rosemary Sauce, Enche Kabin Fried Chicken, Ayam Masak Merah, Fish Goreng Acar and more.

If you still have room for dessert, there is Rojak Buah station for some DIY action on the pungent shrimp paste sauce dressing chunks of fruits and vegetables. Else check out the dessert bar where Ice Kacang, Cendol, Nyonya Kuih Muihs, Durian Swiss Roll, Cheesecake, Pandan Panna Cotta, Bubur Kacang Hijau Durian and Bubur Pulut Hitam will entice your sweet tooth for a sweet ending!

Wash everything down with a cup of hot Teh Tarik or Nescafe to end the day with comfort!

Fresh Juices are available separately from the buffet.
