Crab Generation @ Taman Len Sen, Cheras

Seafood with Unique Flavours!

If you are an adventurous foodies, Crab Generation Restaurant might just be the place for you! An offspring of the famous Fei Fei Crab Restaurant in Kepong, the menu here is fairly similar and has lots of unique flavours creatively incorporated into their seafood laden menu.

One Saturday evening, we ventured into the heavily populated area of Taman Len Sen, Cheras to sample what Crab Generation has to offer. Being the hardcore fan of crab and other seafood, I was very excited to try the unique flavours of crab that this restaurant is famous for.

The restaurant is decorated with minimal design and is the usual standard simple Chinese restaurant set with this round, a theme of bright yellow table cloth to contrast with the bright orange walls and red plastic chairs. The dining area is quite small but there are also al fresco seating outside next to the restaurants.

Be prepared to dine there early because by the evening we were there, there was a queue waiting outside at Crab Generation. Service was pretty brisk and standard and our food was served shortly upon ordering.

Every table seemed to have at least an order of crab. There are various sizes available so ask the staff for your preference and the price before ordering. There are plenty of sauces available from the standard of Salted Egg Crab, Kam Heong Buttered Crab, Marmite Crab, Milky Salted Egg Crab and Buttered Cheese Crab to the creative ones of Peanut Butter Crab, Sweet Corn Crab, Honey Lemon Crab, Cheese Crab, Oreo Cheese Crab, White Pepper Crab, Coffee Cheese Crab and more.

On a normal basis, I doubt I would order their Oreo Cheese Crab (Seasonal Price). However, the owner convinced us that once we tried this flavour, we will love it, especially if we enjoy creamy cheesy sauces.

The Oreo Cheese Crab came smothered in a pale creamy cheese sauce studded with lots of curry leaves and sprinkled with crushed Oreo biscuit. What I notice was that they only serve the Oreo biscuit and not the sweet icing of the cookie so the intense bitter chocolatey note of the Oreo balanced up the luscious rich cheese sauce very well. Indeed, the name sounds unique but the flavours seemed to pair well overall. It is a very rich and creamy sauce and needs to be savored while hot for better flavours. While the crab was fresh and sweet, it was indeed masked by the heavy sauce if you don’t mind it.

Order an order of Fried Mantao (RM5) to mop up the cheesy sauce like we did.

Our next choice of crab was HK Style Chili Crab (Seasonal Price). This one is not for the faint-hearted as it was spicy, a level above average. It sorts of resembles our spicy and sour version except this one was more spicy and less sour or sweet. It has lots of onions and spring onions as aromatics in the sauce.

More dishes to go with our rice, we had their signature Curry Seafood in Coconut (RM58). Served in a large coconut shell, the amount of large seafood pieces was very enticing. Prawns, Mussel and Squid along with vegetables are cooked in a non-creamy spice curry that was pretty aromatic but lack depth of flavour. Still kudos for the fresh seafood which I enjoyed very much.

Steamed Garoupa with Choy Poh (RM78) was a good choice, especially since we have our little one with us. The fish was beautifully cooked and moist in a moreish savory soy sauce with lots of crispy pickled Choy Poh, bits of chili, garlic, spring onions and coriander.

We love pork and always try to order a dish of porky goodness. The BBQ Salad Spare Ribs (RM18) was decent and tasty. Nice tender pieces of ribs well-seasoned and glazed with a sweet BBQ sauce before being finished with a drizzling of mayo. Good combo of sweet, savory and creaminess going on in the flavours of the ribs!

For diners who don’t enjoy spicy food, especially kids, order their Bean Curd with Faux Sharks Fin & Mushrooms (RM28). The homemade bean curd is very smooth and delicious with an eggy note. It is paired with a thick brown gravy cooked with two types of mushrooms and faux sharks fin. A dish great with rice…

It’s a great overall experience for us that evening at Crab Generation. The crowd was still pouring in when we left around 8pm plus so make sure to go there early to avoid the crowd for their crabs and other home style dishes.

  1. With some practice, you get the feel for how freshwater tarpon run before they jump. Usually, the tarpon runs fast before a jump so the angler has a tendency to what to pull back hard, which is the opposite of what you should be doing.
