Steaks & Lobsters @ Desa Sri Hartamas

Awesome Surf & Turf for Indulgence

Desa Sri Hartamas is an area well filled with lots of good eats. Adding to the good eats list is Steaks & Lobsters. In some ways, this place does remind me of another eatery that took off by storm in another part of the world. That said, I am just glad these owners decided to open a restaurant showcasing the best of surf and turf they boldly named Steaks & Lobsters!

Located in the bustling area of Sri Hartamas, parking might be the only problem when dining here but again, when there’s a will to dine, there’s always a way. The restaurant is pretty spacious and decorated with warm theme filled with bricks and wood and lush terracotta wall panels contrasted with cream. The place echoes a casual and friendly vibe, taking the edge off dining in much seriousness despite serving lavish ingredients. Diners can dining in casual and yet enjoy scrumptious premium steaks and lobsters.

The restaurant is basically what its name state, serving up the best cuts of steaks and lobsters prepared the minimalist way. Besides that, there are a handful of other dishes of appetizers, salads, main dishes of ribs, lamb, chicken and fish together with some pasta, burgers and sandwiches. So fear not, not everything is lavish and there are plenty of affordable dishes too when dining at Steaks & Lobsters.

Diving straight into the signatures, we had their steak and lobsters of course! Each lobster served are estimated about 800 grams and are flown in from Maine or Boston, US. The restaurant also imports premium beef from Australia. Choose from Grass-fed to Angus and even the much highly prized Wagyu and have it grilled it to your liking.

Signatures of any restaurants are always the best bet when it comes to ordering. Steaks & Lobsters Signature Flaming Live Lobster (RM110 – Half | RM205 – Full) looked delicious when placed in front of us. I can smell how delicious the aroma was with its light and tantalizing sweet grilled aroma. Chargrilled to a beautiful succulent stage, the crustacean is also topped with house made Ebiko aioli and flamed up. More aioli is served on the side with fresh cut of lemons.

I was pretty satisfied with just the lemon as it really brightened and enhanced the sweet lobster meat. The smoky edge also gave the crustacean an undeniable deliciousness. Even when char-grilled, the meat was still juicy and had a nice firm and bouncy texture.

At Steaks & Lobsters, all their beef and lobsters are serve with unlimited helpings of house made four side dishes. These may change depending on the ingredients available. On that day, we had nice thick cuts of French fries, roasted pumpkin, avocado potato salad and coleslaw. It’s definitely a plus point if you are not full from the lobster!

If you prefer the natural and pure sweetness of crustaceans, then you should definitely go for the Steamed Live Lobster (RM98 – Half | RM195 – Full). As much as I do enjoy the chargrilled lobster, this one would always be my preference as one can really savor how fresh and sweet Maine or Boston lobsters are. It is also juicier when it is steamed. Served with spiced butter sauce, make sure you try this with the lobster chunks as the butter sauce made it richer and buttery.

The owners here take pride in their cuts of wet aged steaks. To them, wet aging makes the meat juicier and tender. All the classic prime cuts of sirloin, ribeye, tenderloin and T-bone are available. There was a special that day that came highly recommended which was the Wagyu Round Sirloin (RM82).

I am impressed. The wagyu sirloin, with a marbling of 7, was really superb. Tender, juicy, bursting with lots of moreish beefy flavours, it’s quite an unusual to have a sirloin this gorgeous. I have always been a ribeye fan and this cut has really changed my mind about sirloin. Because it is a wagyu, the sirloin is well marbled with enough fat to make this sirloin just as good as a ribeye or tenderloin. It is also evenly cooked with a lush pink as what I had requested and there is a nice chargrilled sear too. Can’t ask for anything more… besides that the price is very affordable considering it’s a wagyu with a marbling of 7!

Besides the signatures, there are other dishes as mentioned earlier. We had two appetizers for sharing of Fried Portabello Fries (RM19) and Crispy Hot BBQ Chicken Wings (RM25).

Both are good choices to share. The Fried Portabello Fries is crispy and meaty with a yummy earthy flavour of mushrroms. Dunk these into their Smoky Sriracha Aioli for creamy and spicy notes.

We all thought the Crispy Hot BBQ Chicken Wings was the bomb and is indeed a must-order at Steaks & Lobsters. One gets drumlets and winglets deep fried to crispy perfection and coated with their signature Spicy BBQ Sauce and drizzled with Honey Mustard Sauce at the end. Finger-licking good!!

Warm Buns served with a sweet spiced butter

Fresh Apple Juice, Carrot Juice and Lemonade

Steaks & Lobsters seemed to really have cornered a well-deserved market for surf and turf lovers. We love the casual vibe and the premium quality food they served. We can’t wait to come back to try their 12”Spicy Big Dinosaur Bones (Huge Beef Short Ribs), Premium New Zealand Lamb Leg Steak, *London Cod and Chips and more…

Nosh Up @ The Atria Shopping Gallery

A Noshing Good Time!

Following its original outlet success in Jaya Shopping Centre, Nosh Up Café opened in the newly renovated Atria Shopping Gallery recently. Taking on a modern comfort approach, the café leans toward a bistro concept where diners can expect modern comfort food with familiar flavours.

A casual stroll into the café one weekday with another foodie had us all settling comfortably into their chic and simple décor. From retro tiles to lots of light natural wood décor all over, Nosh Up has a bar set in the mid of the café with seating placed casually in the front to all the way in the back of the café. We loved the warm lightings as it sets the mood for casual and yet simple chic charm to the whole ambiance.

Dinner commenced with Lamb Pie (RM24), a sort of deconstructed one. A pot holding aromatic oven braised lamb stew is served alongside a pillow of crispy flaky puff pastry and a disc of potato rosti with some lightly dressed lettuce. The rich earthy tomato stew had delectable chunks of soft lamb that was so tender and tasty together with soft braised vegetables. A sprinkling of cheese added more flavours. Simply take the puff pastry to mop up all the yummy stew for pure comfort enjoyment.

Next up, everyone was definitely eyeing the large golden Crunchy Soft Shell Crab Burger (RM24). Talk about going big, a large crunchy battered soft shell crab that was obviously bursting out of its toasted bun. Barely balanced on lettuce, fresh tomato slice, cheese and surrounded by a moat of thick cut fries, it’s a burger meant for full blast enjoyment. We loved it!!

The Grilled Sotong Sumbat with Rice (RM19) turned out to be a surprised since it was more local than the other dishes at Nosh Up. Nevertheless, you won’t hear us complaining at the rice salad stuffed squid cooked in a luscious creamy coconut curry sauce labeled as Chef’s Special Sauce. It also comes with a small mount of Asian salad which was more of a pickled vegetable side to cut the richness of the very rich sauce. The dish is best savored piping hot and is also good for sharing.

We thought it was quite a smart moved to pair salmon with garlic fried rice in the Smoked Salmon Garlic Fried Rice (RM19). Obviously the dish seemed to be inspired from Japanese and yet, this one tasted more local than its original. Made more tempting with a poached egg with molten center, the best part of the dish is to cut the egg and watch the egg yolk oozes out to lux up the garlicky fried rice. A side of Asian salad again was also present to remind us how local flavours will always prevail in the dish.

More Asian fusion dishes followed pursuit in Smoked Duck Miso Pasta (RM22). This dish was quite a hit among us that evening. The pasta had a nice nutty saltish miso note and tasted even better with the poached egg. I have always enjoyed smoked duck so bingo again for points in the dish.

Then we went French with Nosh Up’s version of Duck Leg Confit with Orange Sauce (RM35). The duck confit was tender but not mushy and had luscious deep smoky flavours. I would wished for a better crisp on the skin but it’s very minor as the duck is delicious with the roasted potatoes, sautéed onions with peppers and tangy orange sauce. Good effort and definitely worthy of an order if you love duck!

After all the delicious dishes earlier, the Crispy Lamb Shank (RM38) was the only dish that fell a bit short. It’s good on flavours but the lamb was a tad on the dryer end. Never fear because all one needs to do is smothered the lamb with the side of tomatoey sauce. Served with more potatoes and dressed greens, the dish is pretty filling and value for money for big meat eaters.

We could never resist desserts and decided to go all the way with Tiramisu, Red Velvet and Matcha Cheesecake. These were homemade and changes daily. My favorite of the three was the non-alcoholic Tiramisu with its delicious flavour and texture. The Red Velvet is made with beetroot for its signature color so it’s another plus point to enjoy the cake sans the coloring. The Matcha Cheesecake has a solid flavour of the intense green tea that seemed to hold its flavour against the Oreo chocolate.

Finally, a classic twisted of Banana Fritters Split (RM14) completed our meal. It looked a tad messy but once you have dig in, you will be loved by its icy ice creams contrasting with crispy banana fritters and chocolate sauce.

Don’t forget, order Nosh Up’s Rosy Raspberry Lychee Mocktail or Iced Chocolate to quench your thirst!

Bonbori Japanese Cuisine @ Setia Walk, Puchong

Affordable Japanese Cuisine

If you are ever in Puchong area and is craving for Japanese cuisine, head on over to Setia Walk Puchong and check out Bonbori Japanese Cuisine. We stumbled on Bonbori through OffPeak.com and found the restaurant to be very reasonable in serving up affordable Japanese cuisine to many one evening. The restaurant is located on the first floor on the Setia Walk but it has deterred many diners from finding this hidden gem.

We were there one early Sunday evening and the restaurant was already filling up fast. The ambiance is pretty simply and minimal in décor but there are some Japanese elements and knick-knacks to remind you of its roots. Though the restaurant is not big, it does still have a main dining area, a private room and a long sushi bar for sushi enthusiast!

The menu boasts of a solid selection of Japanese cuisine with the usual Sashimi, Sushi, Maki Rolls, Appetizers, Salad, Stews, Tempura, Teppanyaki, Grilled Seafood, Donburi, Noodles, Fried Dishes and Desserts. Despite the crowd, service was decent as the wait staff did their best to scurry around with the orders.

The Sashimi menu has some really good deals. Our platter of Hachi Shoku Sashimi (RM69.90) had salmon, butterfish, tuna, yellowtail, scallop, surf clam, octopus, pink shrimp and shrimp roe. Each sashimi comes in three pieces and these were really delicious. The presentation was also gorgeous, making this dish even better. I know a selection of such portion would have certainly cost more in other Japanese restaurants. Another plus point is that they serve Yellowtail which is quite an expensive fish and my all-time-favorite, so I highly recommended this sashimi platter!

We tried some of their creative Maki rolls and were recommended their two latest Maki rolls on their menu. These are specials and may change from time to time so definitely ask for the specials of the day.

Aburi Trio Maki (RM21.90), a delectable combination of flying fish roe encrusted roll and finished with slices of salmon slathered with more fish roe mayo and torched to a nice toasted touch. Creamy, salty, sublime…

Our second maki was a definitely an elegant and pretty one… Rose Maki (RM26.90). Coiled slivers of salmon and mango with pearls of salmon roe formed the rose on the maki. Such a delicate and delicious roll with lots of sesame seeds and sesame dressing for aroma and flavours. Must order!

We had an appetizer of Special Kakiage (RM11.90), a simple snack of crispy tempura vegetables doused with some special sauce, mayo and masago. Decent snacking before mains…

It may be such a simple and common item but I always enjoy tamago. Japanese makes their a little sweet and savory with a delicious firm texture. Here, the tamago is amped up as Tamago Mentaiyaki (RM11.90). A version of fluffy tamago topped with fish roe mentaiko sauce and also torched for extra richness.

We decided to order some salad and opted for Aigamo Salad (RM15.90), a version with smoked duck breast and sesame dressing. Sufficiently pleasing in flavours as the slices of duck breast is delish plus we get our greens for the meal too.

We were recommended the Unagi Tofu (RM18.90), featuring deep fried tofu topped with grilled unagi and omelette. These were an interesting combination and turned out to be a superb one as the smoky eel really enhanced the crispy tofu, strips of egg omelette, seaweed, sesame seed, unagi sauce and mayo. Pop the whole mount in your mouth at one go for the burst of flavours.

Normally I don’t order stews but since I were told that the Shake Atama Kimchee Soup (RM26.90) is a signature dish, I thought I gave the dish a try. It’s not bad and rendered much hearty notes of spicy pungent kimchi in hot broth with pieces of salmon head. Order some rice with this dish for a full meal.

We finished our meal with Salmon Kushiyaki (RM12.90) and Bacon Asparagus (RM14.90). Both grilled skewers are decent but nothing to shout about. Though one cannot go wrong with bacon, so if you love kushiyaki, then order their Bacon Asparagus.

Bonbori offers diners affordable Japanese cuisine with good quality in Puchong area. Go early as there are limited seats in the restaurants and most diners come with family or large parties.
