Omakase @ Kampachi Pavilion KL

An Exquisite Omakase Experience

Omakase, a word that has now become familiar among Malaysians when dining in Japanese cuisine. Simply a phrase that means ‘to entrust’ the dining experience to the chef, omakase allows a gourmet adventure for avid foodies in the realms of the Japanese culinary world.

It is a Japanese tradition to leave the food choices to the Japanese chef, knowing that the chef knows the best ingredients of the season. One pays a price and depending on the number of courses, the chef goes to work on preparing an omakase meal that ranges from the lightest to the heaviest before finishing up with a sweet course.

For a taste of an omakase experience, seek out the acclaimed Kampachi for a culinary adventure in the heart of our metropolitan city. Kampachi, one of the long-time award-winning Japanese restaurants, has been serving authentic and scrumptious Japanese cuisine using fine premium ingredients air-flown from Japan for over four decades. For this round, we headed over to Kampachi Pavilion for a taste of Chef Alex Lee’s Omakase experience.

Twice a week, the freshest and fine ingredients are imported from Tokyo’s iconic Toyosu Fish Market (formerly known as Tsukiji) and from Kansai Area in Japan. Each omakase experience takes diners from appetizer to sashimi, soup, grilled dish, main course and dessert. An omakase course at Kampachi starts from RM318 onwards and diners can also let the chef know if they do not take a certain ingredient or raw food.

Takebayashi @ The Ritz-Carlton Residences Kuala Lumpur

Kappo-Style Japanese Cuisine

When Chef Tatsuo Takebayashi first greeted us, it was a sight of humble pleasure. A warm smile followed by a bow of humbleness, we were bowled over by the sincerity of Chef Takebayashi. The master chef behind Kappo-style restaurant Takebayashi at the new Ritz-Carlton Residences Kuala Lumpur ushered us gently. One can certainly sense his proudness at the new Takebayashi restaurant.

The restaurant is not as huge as most Japanese restaurant but is well-designed to echo a Zen-minimalist Japanese restaurant. A vertical Japanese sushi bar that takes up half the restaurant space for avid diners who loves to catch some chef actions. There are tables set along the bar in parallel against the glass wall to soak in the natural city elements and scene as well.

A few chefs are hard at work setting up the evening’s service. However, that didn’t stop them from greeting us with a smile.

The catch of the day and fresh produce are displayed on the sushi bar, tempting diners with its glistening and vibrant signs of freshness. From cuts of premium seafood sashimi to an enticing marbled wagyu beef, bright cheery red Japanese Momotaro tomatoes, corn, radish and more, Takebayashi’s menu focuses on such amazing ingredients of Mother Nature.

And while one is dining at Takebayashi, it might also be a good idea to order one of the sake or premium whisky on their list…

A lovely white bubbly of Takebayashi Castello di Luzzano

Dinner commenced with Cream Cheese With Miso (RM30). The sheer simplicity of the dish at sight did not do justice to the dish. A brilliant concoction of pairing the lusciousness of cream cheese with the nutty umami note of miso, this appetizer rocks! The cheese is marinated with miso for 3 days before it is being lightly grilled to intensify and married the flavours together. The first bite, the cheese is utterly smoky with a fine divine note of unctuous pleasure. In fact, it is so good, one may literally not want to share this.

Cold Tomato Umami Jelly (RM45), another dish that really showcases what fine Japanese produce is all about. The skinned tomato itself literally tasted like a juicy sweet fruit. Set on a bed of konbu-dashi jelly cubes, there is a good balance of fresh juicy sweetness of the tomato with the lightest flavours of savory umami notes from the jelly. The chilled factor of the dish really elevated the vibrancy of the flavours of the dish.

If one is ever wondering that the White Fish with XO Salsa (RM80) looked rather familiar, it is because Chef Takebayashi’s previous stint at Nobu inspires his creation for the dish. Depending on the freshest catch of the day, ours was a delectable Kinmedai or golden eye snapper. The delicate firmness of the fish coupled with the sublime notes of house made XO sauce and ponzu sauce is exceptionally delicious!

Even Takebayashi’s Chawan Mushi (RM45) is jazzed up with a beautiful brown dried scallop sauce. The silky smooth egg custard has that classic umami note that warmed the palate with pleasure. The chawan mushi is also studded with shrimp, chicken, gingko nut and a yomogi mochi. All in all, the custard is satisfying with plenty of flavour and texture profile.

The Salmon Tataki Salad (RM50) is not only beautiful at sight but taste as amazing as it looks. Thick cut lightly seared salmon is paired with Takebayashi’s signature jalapeno sauce with crisp greens and sliced radish. The salmon is utterly sublime with a creamy melt-in-mouth feel and the jalapeno sauce packed enough heat to give the dish its wow factor. A must-order for foodies who loves a good kick of heat!

A dish that sides between snacking or a meal on its own if you are going for it alone, the Popcorn Shrimp Spicy Mayo Sauce (RM45) is simply lip-smacking yum. Even after our few minutes of photo session, the popcorn shrimp remains superbly light and crispy with hints of sweetness. The creamy and lightly spicy heat from the sauce worked so well with the crispy shrimps that we kept going back to mop up the sauce happily…

Grilled Spring Chicken with Wasabi Pepper Sauce was an intriguing dish as it looked nothing like any Japanese dish we have ever seen. Tender and juicy spring chicken is well-chargrilled to render crispy skin and served with a wasabi laced brown pepper sauce before being crowned with a grilled red pepper. Besides the wasabi, the dish is practically non-Japanese, not that we minded because the dish is rather tasty and cooked well.

When Executive Chef Jhon Chang personally grated fresh wasabi on a shark’s skin grater, we all stared in excitement with anticipation of what is coming next…

The pièce de résistance of the evening must be the prime cut of fatty Toro and fresh wasabi! Chef Chang has certainly mastered the art of sushi, having learning from MasterChef Takebayashi. A gorgeous sea green lacquered tray enhanced the skilled-shaped nigiri sushi of Otoro and Aji. Each one generously draped over sushi rice like a plush blanket of ocean pleasures. The sushi is served with chunky pickled baby ginger which lent a delicate gingery tang to clear the palate.

Seriously superb, both the Toro (RM40) and Aji (RM10) each are sublime. It is the perfect way to end this gastronomy at Takebayashi.

To sweeten up the evening, the serving of Japanese Nashi Pear and vanilla ice cream was simple and satisfying, leaving us with still a yearning for that amazing toro and aji sushi…

Kimi-Ya Japanese Restaurant @ Avantas Residence, Old Klang Road

Marvelous May Promotion, Mother’s Day Special, Lunch Set and More…

If you’ve never had fugu before, you can now savor this exotic pufferfish at Kimi-Ya Japanese Restaurant this month. Located in Avantas Residence in Old Klang Road, Kimi-Ya serves lots of Japanese classics to avid foodies of The Land of the Rising Sun.

It wasn’t hard to locate the restaurant since it was located on this fairly new residential block of the bustling road. Beautifully designed, it had all the markings of the epitome of a Japanese restaurant with lots of woodwork as the base of the restaurant theme.

Dine in booths as well as regular dining tables or catch some sushi actions at the beautifully designed modern and minimalist sushi bar. Kimi-Ya also has a private dining room for private parties.

The restaurant is spacious and well-designed that echo Zen and comfort throughout the restaurant.

Kimi-Ya has a large impressive collection of sake too!

For Mother’s Day promotion, Kimi-Ya is bringing an exotic taste of the infamous pufferfish to diners with Fugu Nabe. Valid from 1st May till 14th May, diners can enjoy fugu in its purest form. Fear not if you’re wondering as Kimi-Ya’s chef is licensed to prepare this special fish.

The fugu is served thinly sliced on the side with a pot of bubbling nabe filled with lots of various vegetables and bean curd in delicate dashi broth. Just gently swish the fugu slice for a few seconds in the hot broth and enjoy the delicate natural flavours of the fish. The slightly firm and bouncy texture of the fish is rather unique. It’s a very refine dish that symbolizes what Japanese cuisine is all about.

For the whole month of May, diners can also enjoy Japan Karatsuki Hotate Butter Yaki. Glorious fresh Karatsuki scallop with roe from Japan is cooked gently at our table on its own shell with Shimeji mushrooms in rich butter sauce. Deliciously aromatic and succulent, the scallop was sweet, buttery and divine. The mushrooms had also soaked in the sauce well and was a treat to enjoy with the premium scallop. One may not be enough…

Kimi-Ya’s a la carte menu consist of various selections of sashimi and sushi. We had the Matsu Sashimi Moriawase, featuring six types of the freshest sashimi cut of the day. We noted that the Matsu Sashimi Moriawase platter was arrange in 360 degree presentation and was told that this way, everyone around the table can enjoy this platter.

The Matsu Sashimi Moriawase platter had Salmon, White Tuna, Yellowtail, Tuna, Scallop and Salmon Roe.

Sublime slices of sashimi that is further enhanced with house recipe soy sauce and fresh wasabi.

The gorgeous salty globules of salmon roe is divine!

No matter which angle you look at, this sashimi platter is striking beautiful and delish…

Next dish of Hamachi Carpaccio features my favorite yellowtail sashimi. Sublime slices of Hamachi is rolled with finely shredded radish and onion and sauced with house ponzu soy sauce. It’s an explosion of umami flavours in the mouth!

The Salmon Tataki is also superb with thick slices of lightly seared salmon sashimi served with house soy sauce, spicy grated radish and scallion. We adored the salmon for its texture and flavours. It’s so moreish, we were literally fighting for this dish.

One cannot go wrong with sushi rolls, especially if their looking this good! We had their Avocado Ebi Mentai Roll and Unagi Avocado Roll but there are few more rolls that sounded equally tempting in the menu.

The Avocado Ebi Mentai Roll has that salty luscious Pollack roe or mentai sauce with creamy avocado and crispy prawn tempura. This one is also very tasty and delish with its combination. It was polished off faster than a speeding bullet on our table.

The Unagi Avocado Roll takes on classic combination of sweet and smoky eel with creamy avocado, tamago egg, cucumber, salmon roe, mayo and eel sauce. Needless to say, flavours of sweet, savory, smoky and creamy works harmoniously yummy.

Besides a la carte, Kimi-Ya offers value-for-money lunch set on weekdays that comes with a free choice of dessert. Diners can choose the 12 variations of lunch set that comes with Steamed Chawan Mushi, Pickles, Soup, Fruits, Rice or Noodle. Price starts from RM26 to RM46, Monday to Friday from 12.00pm to 3.00pm.

The Chicken Teriyaki Gozen (RM26) features delicious and tender chicken thigh with the classic sticky sweet and savory teriyaki sauce. Can’t go wrong with this one…

If you love Salmon like me, you can opt for the Salmon Mentaimayo Yaki Gozen (RM38). Cooked well, the salmon was moist and was deliciously draped with the moreish mentaimayo sauce that has been lightly torched.

For some slurping action, the Nabeyaki Udon To Sushi Gozen (RM36) never fails to satisfy with its comforting flavours of hot broth, thick, slippery udon, shrimp tempura, soft egg and vegetables. This dish is paired with an assorted plate of sushi.

From the lunch set, one can choose one dessert from its dessert menu. There’s Vanilla Ice Cream, Chocolate Ice Cream, Black Sesame Ice Cream, Matcha Ice Cream, Mizu Shingen Mochi, Abekawa Mochi, Matcha Shiratama Zenzai, Yuzu Sherbet and dessert of the day.

The Mizu Shingen Mochi is irresistibly adorable with the cute concept of kitty cat and cow. It’s actually the latest Japanese dessert craze of Japanese raindrop cake, well not really cake but jelly to me, served with brown sugar syrup and soybean powder.

The Matcha Shiratama Zenzai is refreshing with its lush Matcha ice cream served with red bean paste and little glutinous rice balls.

Dessert of the day was a Sweet Potato Pudding that is light and easy on the palate as a sweet ending.

Kimi-Ya offers quality and premium ingredients in their menu as well as classic favorites. Prices are slightly above the normal Japanese chain franchises but diners are assured of quality and execution. There is also free valet parking for diners too. There’s plenty of dishes to cater to every one of all ages and the ambiance is really lovely and comforting.
