The Enclave @ Lorong Kurau, Bangsar

Your Friendly Neighborhood Gastropub

We love pub food and we love it even more if it’s in our neighborhood. It means we can grab a bite whenever we want since it’s so near our home. Well if your neighborhood happens to be in the Bangsar area, then you just might want to hop over to The Enclave, a local gastropub serving affordable Western and Asian menu.

Opened barely few months, the owner wanted have a place for everyone to unwind at the end of the evening with hearty gastro bites and beer or even grab a good lunch. The moment you walked into The Enclave, you’ll be greeted by a similar pub scene in Europe but with a Malaysian touch. It has a cozy and down-to-earth ambiance from all the furniture, brick walls, cement bar, chalkboard and industrial lighting. Raw and rustic plus warmness makes one want to hang out at this pub.

The owner also has a great collection of yesteryears pictures in black and white or sepia of our country and its people. I was amazed to see his collections of old photos of Kuala Lumpur and these are quite precious today to show our heritage back then.

Now what makes you want to visit The Enclave… the food for a start! The menu is fairly familiar with lots of classic Western dishes and a few local dishes that is bound to be a crowd pleaser.

We started with Cream of Mushroom Soup (RM18), classic and comfort food to start any meal. Despite it looking light and pale, there is great flavour of mushrooms in the soup. It’s creamy and soothing with every spoonful of the thick soup with bits of toasty croutons and herbs.

For pasta, we opted for Carbonara Chicken (RM20), a classic favorite of mine as well as my little one. The dish faired decent with all the creamy rich notes of cream and cheese. There was generous chicken ham and Shimeji mushrooms with the pasta, lending textures and more flavours to the pasta.

For mains, the Grilled Chicken Chop (RM22) and Grilled Lamb Chop (RM35) came highly recommended. And we were glad we took the adviseed because both dishes are scrumptious. The Grilled Chicken Chop is very juicy with a solid chargrilled smoky note. It also has a lovely spice note with herbs, decent brown gravy, creamy mash and vegetables.

The Grilled Lamb Chop is really value-for-money as well as delicious. Solid portion of meaty lamb chops well marinated and chargrilled to medium doneness. The juiciness and flavours are spot on and comes with rich brown gravy, mash and vegetables. This one is a must-order if you love lamb!

The Enclave Chicken Burger (RM24) is a hearty one too. Thick and moist thigh chicken that is tasty and cooked well, sandwiched with toasted sesame seed bun, cheese and the usual suspects of lettuce, tomatoes. Crowned with fried egg that is cooked just right with a soft yolk, the burger comes with housemade coleslaw and generous thick cuts golden fries. I really enjoyed the smoky grilled chicken a lot in this burger. There is a beef patty version available too.

We didn’t think much of Thai Pad Ped Chicken (RM19) till we tried it. Gosh, this was pretty yummy. The chicken was so tender and bursting with moreish flavours of spices and aromatics. It was such a yummy dish with steamed rice and crispy crackers. Although it didn’t have much sauce, I didn’t mind as the chicken is really tasty on its own. I would order this again for sure…

We were told that the Spicy Mutton Fried Rice and Salad (RM20) is the owner’s family recipe. Fried with the mutton varuval, made by owner’s mom, the fried rice is exceptionally tasty with hints of spices and heat. Finished with lots of fried shallots and crispy crackers with side of greens, it’s a hearty dish of comfort food.

There is also Shish Taouk (RM18), skewers of seasoned spiced chicken served with pita bread, fries, salad and garlic sauce. Despite the chicken meat being a tad dry since its breast, flavours are still tasty. When put together with bread, salad and sauce, it actually is pretty decent.

If you’re here for lunch, The Enclave has some set lunch deals such as this Chicken Nasi Lemak with Ice Lemon Tea (RM15). Value-for-money and classic favorites never fail to please. The nasi lemak is quite substantial with a fragrant coconut infused rice, fried crispy boneless chicken, fried egg, sambal and the usual suspects.

The Enclave hits many right notes in its menu. The fact that it is also in a housing area makes it even better as it makes a great hangout place at the end of the day to unwind.

The Point KL, Jalan Kasah @ Damansara Heights

A French & Italian New Menu

The Point Restaurant & Bar Kuala Lumpur has been serving luscious dishes to many gourmands and has continue to evolve since it first started 2 years ago. Nestled in Jalan Kasah at Damansara Heights among other solid long-time favorite restaurants, The Point also draws foodies who loves modern and fine flavours of Western and Asian cuisines merge together in harmony.

The Point KL aims to please and is a restaurant and bar set on Level One and Two of another restaurant. Head on up by the side door to the first level of the dining area while the second floor houses the bar area. Both levels are design with minimalist modern style flagged by grand neon gold glows in the restaurant. The restaurant is beautifully elegant, framed by its modern furniture and wall panels as well as the grand pieces of art.

The bar takes on a modern contemporary ambiance with cool blue glows with dark modern furniture. There is are also private rooms available for dining as well as lounging.

Helmed by Head Chef Kua Jin Hao, The Point KL launches a brand new fusion style menu that is inspired by local, Asian, European and Mediterranean flavours this year. The menu is divided into Tapas, Brunch, Dinner and Dessert selections and is already available at the restaurant in February. In conjunction with their second anniversary, the new menu is the perfect celebration for the restaurant cum bar.

First up, Brunch delights took form in various variations of eggs and breakfast favorites. One can’t go wrong with the classic Big Breakfast (RM28). Dive into juicy pork sausages, pork bacon, prosciutto, scrambled or poached egg of your choice, hash brown and brioche toast. Hearty and all cooked well, the dish is faultless and makes a great brunch to start the day with lots of protein in tow.

Next up, a Bonnie and Clyde combo of Portabello Mushroom & Mozzarella Croquette (RM28) packed a memorable treat for brunch. Certainly may not be the healthiest but the dish of breaded fried whole portobello mushroom stuffed with mozzarella cheese paired with a perfect 62c sous vide egg on brioche rocks in flavours and textures.

Its got all the check marks of yumminess with oozing cheese in meaty mushroom with crispy breading and glorious eggporn sensation in the creamy and luscious sous vide egg before being tied up with what looks to be mustard cream sauce. I would definitely order this again anytime of the day!

Ok so burger may not be the best choice for brunch but hey, I won’t be complaining on this one. Surf and Turf (RM32) is a whopper of a burger with its pairing of golden crispy battered crayfish topped on crispy crumbed corned beef patty on buttered toasted bun and smothered in creamy dill sauce. There’s no easy way to eat this but man, this burger is just darn awesome in my books. A side of golden fries and mesclun salad completed the dish.

For entrees, we savored a few from the menu and the Salted Egg Yolk Soft Shell Crab with Curry Leaf Infused Cream Sauce Served in Lettuce (RM29) was a good take from our Asian favorite dish. The chef did put in much effort in terms of flavours and textures in the dish. The soft shell crab was crispy and well coated with the creamy salty egg yolk sauce. Lettuce and cabbage balance up the deep fried crab and crunchy shredded pastry skin added more texture.

The Prawn & Crab Croquette with Laksa Coconut Broth & Salmon Roe (RM31) was really unique in terms of flavours. The combo of prawn and crab patty was decent with a nice crispy shell of crumbs. It was the laksa coconut sauce that stood out as the spiced up creamy sauce was delicious and aromatic. The sauce took the croquette to new heights of flavours, making the dish memorable.

A mouthful in terms of name and ingredient list, the Citrus Cured Salmon Carpaccio, Served with 62c Egg Yolk, Wasabe Mayo, Salted Kelp & Truffled Toast (RM42) was also pretty at sight. The subtle citrus note in the salty salmon paired well with glorious sous vide egg with molten egg yolk center. When savored together with all the other ingredients, the dish also proved to be memorable in a fine way.

When we saw the Suckling Pig 12 Hour Slow Cooked, Served with Plum & Balsamico (RM52), there was expectation set as we looked forward to Suckling Pig said to be cooked for 12 hours slowly and served with plum and balsamic sauce. However, the actual dish was too small in portion to even leave any impression for our table diners. The flavour was decent and I would think the suckling pig was cooked well so maybe it was just the portion size that didn’t make it. We did feedback and hope for a better portion to be able to enjoy this dish better.

The best dish of the night for me was undeniably the Truffled Cold Angel Hair with Avruga Caviar (RM30). Sheer simple pasta paired with lavish and highly prized Avruga caviar and truffle oil did wonders for the flavour profile. The cold pasta still had a good al dente bite and every slurp was deliriously aromatic with heady truffle perfume. Salty popping black pearls of caviar added a gorgeous pop of flavour and texture to the pasta. The dish is so awesome that it’s worth hogging it to oneself…

We finally touch base on mains and the first dish to arrive was Pan Seared Black Cod (RM62), served with smoked caviar, asparagus, mushroom fritters and balsamico sauce. The cod was cooked just right, melt-in-the-mouth flesh with sweet and creamy notes. The smoky and salty briny notes of the caviar amped up the flavours of the dish. Textures came from crispy mushroom fritter and crunchy asparagus.

The next dish of Bah Kut Teh (RM47) had us all ogling with glee at sight of thick slabs of more 12 hours slow cooked pork belly served on a bed of quinoa, sautéed Bok Choy, crispy mushroom tempura and a a bold stroke of chili padi soy glaze. I enjoyed the soft unctuous pork belly but craved for more sauce. There is definitely a wonderful aroma of Bah Kut Teh spice and herbs but I wished for more boldness in terms of flavours. As odd as it sounds on pairing Bah Kut Teh pork belly with quinoa, it actually works and is quite enjoyable. Love the creative twist on this classic dish!

The Chicken in Percik Sauce (RM38) is obviously a take from our local Malay percik dish. Chef Kua made the dish more refine and sous vide the chicken thigh for tenderness. Served with creamy mash, asparagus, quinoa crisp and percik sauce, the chicken lacked the smoky element that makes percik so deliciously good. Nevertheless, we polished this dish off easily because the chicken was tasty and juicy.

Pasta lovers will be pleased with The Point’s pasta choices. Our Halibut Fish Linguine (RM28) had strands of linguine tossed in creamy based sauce cooked with pieces of halibut, asparagus and herbs. Topped with a generous shaving of parmesan cheese, the pasta was very flavourful and hearty. The dish is best savored hot as it is rich and creamy.

We also tried the Pesto Prawn Linguine (RM30), a version of basil pesto with a creamy note. Flavours are certainly bold and punchy with lots of herb notes. A large prawn worked well with the pasta, adding sweetness to the dish.

Our third pasta dish was Spaghetti Rosso (RM28). Pasta tossed in a creamy and tangy sundried tomato pesto sauce crowned with anchovies and toasted pine nuts. I loved the comforting and intensified flavours of rich tomato sauce with a creamy touch. The added salty anchovies and nutty pine nuts reminded us of the Italian’s love for such ingredients.

As the evening comes to an end, we shared bites of The Point KL’s desserts that took on more classic treats. The Mille-Feuille Ricotta (RM26) had layers of puff pastry sandwiched with rich and cream ricotta cheese filling and dressed with peaches and berries.

The Chocolate Fudge (RM25) was decadent in every spoonful. Intense dark cocoa that is sinfully delicious and fudgy, the fudge was so addictive with the cold ice cream.

The Crème Brulee (RM25) is spiked up with Kahlua and Bailey for extra happiness.

The Point KL has lots of potential as far as the menu goes. We loved many of the dishes and the creativity of the fusion. Coupled with an elegant ambiance, it’s a great hang out place after work as well as a place for celebrations and indulgence.

Fly Me to London: Pictures and Shikumen Bar & Restaurant

Good Eats at Dorsett Shepherds Bush!

While staying at Dorsett Shepherds Bush in West London, I also enjoyed some really good eats at the two restaurant located in the hotel. From breakfast to lunch and dinner, both restaurants Pictures and Shikumen Bar & Restaurant offers diners a treat from Western and Asian cuisine set in an elegant and stylish ambiance.

Pictures

The all-day dining contemporary brasserie restaurant is located on the ground floor of the hotel. Managed by the hotel, Pictures serves European menu liven up with a touch of Asia from breakfast to lunch and dinner. The restaurant has two dining space. The main dining room is spacious and design with an elegant contemporary flair. Themed in muted grey wall contrasted with rich wood and black tables and wall panels, Pictures also has lots of framed mirrors and black & white photos of yesteryears movie icons. Silver velvet chairs paired with black tables for contrast blended into the theme beautifully.

The second dining space is a private room named Red Room. Located discreetly behind the well-hidden door next to the Audrey Hepburn corner in the hotel. A gorgeous vibrant red lite up the room with the combination of grey, silver, black and white themed colors. The room echoed the classy themed from Pictures’ main dining room with lots of yesteryear movie icons in black and white. This room is perfect for private parties and gathering whether it be business or personal!

Every morning before we start our day, we visited Pictures for the spread of luscious English breakfast. I enjoyed the spread of buttery pastries and croissants, mini muffins, cold cuts and cheese, cereals fresh fruits and creamy yoghurt. From hot buffet warmers are thick grilled Cumberland sausages, bacon, sauteed mushrooms, grilled tomatoes and baked beans. Order your eggs freshly prepared at their egg station.

Since Dorsett Shepherds Bush pride themselves in theming the whole hotel with an Oriental touch, Pictures also serves up some classic Asian breakfast favorites of dim sum, porridge and congee with pickled vegetables and Fried Noodles. The overall breakfast spread may not have a long list like our typical Asian hotels but the spread is definitely delicious and consisted of quality dishes that will leave you satiated happily.

MAB Pilot Parker and Dorsett Bear met for the very first time and joined us for our breakie!

Service is another plus point here as every morning, the staff greets you with lots of smile, perking up your mornings with much pleasantness.

For lunch and dinner, Pictures serve a la carte menu of European dishes. We were hosted by General Manager of Dorsett Shepherds Bush, the gracious Hilary Cross for an unforgettable lunch. The whole restaurant looked even better during noon time as the natural lighting lite up the room beautifully.

We started our lunch with a wholesome and creamy Carrot & Pumpkin Soup. A bowl of thick and comforting flavours of root vegetables served with freshly baked crusty bread rolls did wonder to warm up our appetites for more to come.

Our main course was a delectable Barbary Duck Breast with Red Cabbage & Plum Sauce . Barbary duck, also known as Muscovy duck, is famous for their rich plump and firm meat despite it being leaner that the usual local ducks. A whole duck breast is skillfully rendered on its skin till crispy and finished in the oven for medium doneness. The flesh is so succulent and has a light pinkness on the firm meat. Served with a tangy and fruity marmalade and plum sauce, the duck slices were superb in flavours. Accompanying the duck was fondant potatoes, tangy braised red cabbage and some micro greens. A must- order if you love duck!

For those who prefer a vegetarian option, there is the Pea Risotto. A creamy risotto studded with pea shoots, asparagus, broad bean and carrots cooked in vegetable stock and finished with lots of shavings of parmesan cheese.

Dessert Platter of Pineapple Upside down Cake, Crème Bruleé Cheesecake and Brownie took our lunch ending to the sweetest heights. I couldn’t be any higher on cloud nine! Three sumptuous and sinful desserts won many hearts that day, including mine.

From warm caramelized Pineapple Upside down cake of moist cakey batter with whole cherries and juicy pineapples, each bite of this cake with vanilla ice cream was heavenly on my sweet sense. The star of the plate was definitely the Crème Brulee Cheesecake, another heavenly concoction showcasing the best of both worlds of cheesecake and crème brulee. The cheesecake literally melts-in-the-mouth with rich silky sweetness contrasted with creamy layer of cheese and buttery biscuit layer. The brownie was decadent with dark chocolate notes and went well with the ice cream too.

The culinary team behind Pictures

There are many more dishes on the menu that looks tempting at Pictures. From Crayfish Cocktails, Potted Duck Salad to Slow Cooked Pork Ribs, 28 Day Dry Aged Cattleman’s 8oz Striplion, 21 Day Aged 6oz Scotch Fillet, Point Brewery Grimsby Baby Haddock and more, there are also new age sandwiches with hearty fillings!

Shikumen Bar & Restaurant

If you’re in London and hankering for Chinese, visit Shikumen Bar & Restaurant at Dorsett Shepherds Bush for a feast of fine dining Asian specials. Shikumen, owned by Malaysian born Simon Chai, has already created quite a buzz in the dining scene when it was awarded the Bib Gourmand in the 2016 Michelin Guide. Shikumen (石库门) translates to “stone gate” and is a style of housing blending Chinese and Western structural styles that is unique to Shanghai. Echoing its denotation, Shikumen Bar & Restaurant showcase their Chinese cuisine injected with a touch of modern Western creativity. Serving a list of house signatures and a selection of handmade Dim Sums daily, it is now a popular hot spot of many who enjoys fine dining cuisine with an elegant flair.

The restaurant has 150 covers with a further 16 covers in the bar area, is beautifully designed with a classy and modern Oriental Shanghai theme. The handsome and bold restaurant has an overall cherry wood themed paired with cream, muted greys and black. Oriental art pieces completed the elegant ambiance at the restaurant.

Dinner commenced with the much famed 18-folds of beautifully pleated soup dumpling of Xiao Long Bao. Sufficiently impressive and delicious in flavours, we sip our broth from the dumpling gently before savoring the delicate savory note of the minced filling encased in the thin dumpling skin.

A house signature of Legendary Roast Duck seemed to be a favorite as seen on many of the tables that night. A whole gorgeously lacquered duck carved at our table side with précised knife skills and quickly sandwiched into hot steamed mantao bun and thin pancake with hoisin sauce, cucumber and scallion. I would have certainly love a bit more crispy skin with the duck, nevertheless, the duck was moist and tender. I also enjoyed the option of the pancake skin and mantao bun for a different texture.

As with most Chinese meals, soups are a must and ours was the classically famed Sichuan Hot and Sour Soup. Piquant and spicy in heat, the thick soup has all the usual ingredients of the classic soup. A solid balance of sour, savory, sweet and spicy flavours, whetting the palate for more dishes to come…

Our next dish paid homage to the king of crustaceans in Stir Fried Lobster with Chili & Garlic. A generous portion of pieces of lobster cooked in house signature chili and garlic sauce was definitely a crowd pleaser. Despite the robust flavours of chili and garlic, I can still taste the sweet flesh of the tender lobster. It was certainly a delicious finger-licking good moment while enjoying this dish!

We also had Shikumen’s Legendary Roasted Lamb Rack. A trimmed lamb rack cutlet was well marinated with savory and sweet Asian flavours. Served with an unusual pairing of wine poached pear, I especially enjoyed the caramelized bits of the lamb.

Our last savory course was a big filler of Pan Fried Tofu with Seafood in Pumpkin Sauce, Stir Fried Asparagus, Lotus Root, Mushrooms and Pumpkin and Vegetable Fried Rice with Edamame. While the fried rice and stir fried vegetables was decent, it was the pumpkin that was deliciously yummy. House made soft egg bean curd smothered in a lightly creamy and sweet pumpkin sauce also had the popping sensations of flying fish roes to give this dish another textural component.

Dessert Platter of Mango Grapefruit Tapioca Pearls, Sweet Black Sesame Ball and Green Tea Pudding highlight all the favorite classics of Chinese desserts on a plate.

Highlights for me were their Xiao Long Bao, Legendary Roast Duck and in Stir Fried Lobster with Chili & Garlic. Do call for reservations as this restaurant garners a good crowd with all its scrumptious dishes!
