Staycation in Singapore

It’s been a while since travels across borders are allowed due to current pandemic situation. My family and I have been reminiscing about our trip to the Land of the Merlion. We took the trip back in 2019 and really enjoyed ourselves as we rendezvous through Singapore’s tourist and local hotpots.

We checked into Dorsett Singapore for our trip and was pleasant satisfied with the beautiful hotel and its modern contemporary design. Location was also excellent as the hotel is set above the Outram Park MRT Station, making its easy for us to maneuver around the city through public transportation.

Our Deluxe Room had a lovely city view. We requested for an extra bed as well for our little one. Equipped with all essential and a little more of room and bathroom amenities, this hotel is one of the nicer and premium category hotels in Singapore. We stayed 3D2N and was indeed well-rest with the hotel’s premium bed and facilities.

Besides the view of the city is lovely and the breakfast option is also very good. Too bad we spent more time touring the city that using the facilities of the swimming pool and other facilities. Maybe we can do that the next round.

Searching for a hotel that best caters to your needs are now as easy as it can be. Such websites now offer plenty of options and prices with hotel guest reviews that helps to reiterate your needs on hotel stays.

One can also opt to stay at Sentosa Island hotel if you are planning to enjoy Sentosa during your trip there as there are plenty to do on the island itself. In fact, Capella Sentosa Hotel pop-up recently on my social media feeds. Possibly because I have been doing a little travel search on Hotel in Singapore to plan my trips once the borders are open!

We visited Singapore’s Science Centre on our trip and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It was truly a very knowledgeable experience and we also had a blast taking lots of photos. One of the must- experience at this Science Centre is their Omni-Theatre where we catch the amazing Great Bear Rainforest show in Southeast Asia's first 8K 3D Digital Dome Theatre.

There’s plenty to do and one can certainly spent half day to a full day there easily exploring all science displays at the Atrium. Also do check out their Professor Crackitt’s Light Fantastic Mirror Maze, Laser Maze Challenge, E-mmersive Experiential Environments, Butterflies Up-Close, Marine Alcove and more.

While we savored several yummy meals in Singapore, one of our most highlight was in Chinatown in the city. Despite the many choices available there, we settled for Chinatown Seafood and was happy with our choice of their wide range of seafood menu.

The restaurant is heavily packed with locals as well as tourist, a good sign that the restaurant does cater to many. Menu is laden with lots of seafood choices as well as meat and vegetable options along with some dim sum.

To start off, our Xiao Long Bao was pretty decent, considering this is not a dim sum restaurant. Each dumpling was filled with that delectable hot broth encased in thin skinned and beautifully pleated folds.

Little one wanted Fried Rice while I wanted to enjoy Singapore’s Chili Crab! Sufficient to say, both of us were satiated with our choices. Fried Rice had that lovely breath of wok hei with fluffy rice and egg.

My Singapore Chili Crab was divine. We couldn’t resist ordering mantao to mopped up that thick and creamy eggy spicy gravy. The crab was also very fresh and sweet. I would reorder this anytime again…

Another dish that also won brownie points from us was their Salted Egg Prawn Balls. Utterly sublime, large deshelled prawns were fried and glazed in that umami savory salted egg sauce. Truly worth its price in my books.

Our stay in Singapore may be short but it was definitely sweet! Perhaps its now a good time to start planning like me so that we will be ready when the borders open for travels…

Plaza Premium First Lounge @ KLIA

Refresh in Comfort

Travelers will agree that waiting for their flights can be rather tiring and daunting, especially for business travelers who consistently travels for work. Hence those who can get access to business lounges will be able to at least wait in comfort with some good food and drinks or even a quick shower to freshen up.

On my recent travel, I had the chance to experience the Plaza Premium First Lounge at KLIA while waiting for my red-eye flight. At KLIA, the lounge is located at the Sateline Terminal at Level 2, Mezzanine Floor at East Zone. After taking the Aerotrain to the Sateline Terminal, make your way to Gate C21 – C27, East Zone.

There are several options in entering the lounge. The easiest of course is to make a payment per entry. Else the lounge is also accessible with selected credit cards or travel passes. Do check here for the list of credit cards and travel passes.

Guests are greeted with a smile the moment you enter the main entrance to the lounge. The next sight would be an open kitchen view along with some bar table and stools for casual lounging. One can view the buffet spread available around this area. Flight information is also available here as well as further inside the lounge.

A waitstaff will certainly lead you into the main dining area. As soon as I sat down, I was handed a la carte and drink menus. Since the mocktail of the month was Wildcat Cooler and it also came highly recommended, I opted to try it.

The exotic dark purplish mocktail, served in a glass tumbler, was a concoction of blue berry puree, lemon and soda water. It is refreshing with a fruity and citrusy tang. Easy to enjoy if you’re looking for a thirst-quencher.

Of course, there are plenty of other beverages such as coffee and tea, juices, beer and sodas from the self-service bar or wine or liquor from the menu.

There’s a solid selection of food from snacks to light bites, sandwiches, salads and dessert on the buffet bar or simply order from the menu for hot dishes such as Malaysian Chicken Satay, BBQ Chicken Rice, Barramundi with Nyonya Sauce, Malaysian Curry Noodles, Porridge and more. They also offer international choices such as Wasabi Chicken, Beef Bacon Aglio, Mushroom Aglio, Scrambled Egg and more. Vegetarian options are also available.

I opted for Malaysian Chicken Satay for a light bite since it was quite late. The skewers were nicely grilled and served with the classic peanut sauce. Decent appetizer if you are feeling peckish for a small supper snack.

A few children knick-knacks to keep them occupied…

What I really like was that the lounge offers an area for those who needed to get some work done. This area is sectioned off but is just next to the main dining area. The long worktable has plenty of electrical sockets and charging station, free wifi and even a flat screen tv.

I had a meeting to attend prior to my flight and found that it was easy to connect and carry on with my meeting. Wifi was strong so the meeting went on without a glitch…

There are few sectioned areas in the lounge to chill. If one is just looking for a place to relax, head on to more comfort seating in the lounge bay inside to rest at the many sofa chairs.

For those seeking some refresh, the lounge also offers shower facilities.

Plaza Premium First Lounge offers a solid list of lounge facilities to allow travelers to seek some R&R. My overall experience was very satisfactory from the service to the facilities of comfort. If you’re looking for a lounge while travelling, do check the Plaza Premium First Lounge as it operates 24 hours a day at KLIA.

KL City Discovery Tour with Cosmo Hotel Kuala Lumpur Staycation

City Discovery Package Promotion

Kuala Lumpur is a city that offers many splendors of Malaysian culture and history to locals and tourists. It is one place that often many locals take for granted as the best possible way to know the city is to explore the city by foot.

A recent staycation at Cosmo Hotel Kuala Lumpur had me, someone who has been living in the metropolitan city for the last 20 years, getting to really know and love the city even more. Despite the concrete jungle of skyscrapers and the heavy traffic, the city really had so much more to offer.

We checked in early at Cosmo Hotel Kuala Lumpur with a few friends, me and my little one that is. An early trip on a public holiday where the streets of the city are as fairly deserted. The weather was mighty fine. The rays of the sun was welcoming and the heat of the city was surprisingly bearable.

It was an enticing City Discovery package from Cosmo Hotel Kuala Lumpur that prompted this plan on this quiet day in hanging out with friends and exploring what the locals termed as Cuti Cuti Malaysia!

Priced at RM288 nett per room night inclusive of breakfast, set lunch and dinner for two persons; plus a flexible check-in time and a full 28-hour stay with complimentary access to the Hotel’s gymnasium and in-room WiFi access, it was hard to not take up this offer and let the little one learn a few things about KL.

We left our bags at the hotel, chatting in relaxation as a we had a plan in place to visit KL Forest Eco Park. To be honest, I have passed the street of Raja Chulan countless times and yet, I have never notice this eco forest. A quick and easy 10-minute stroll with a few short stops for photos had us stopping a few minutes to appreciate the beauty of Mother Nature that day.

KL Forest Eco is free admission but always do check with the hotel concierge while one is there just to be sure. It is one of the oldest parks in the city and many of the locals seemed to remember their childhood memories of visiting this place.

A quick search and its was reported that this eco park was originally gazette as a forest reserve all the way back in 1906. Located in the hills of Bukit Nanas, the forest reserve has two entrances. Whichever way one starts, one will end up leaving the other entrance in pleasure of Mother Nature local beauty.

The fact that this forest reserve is well-kept right smack in the middle of the concrete jungle is pretty remarkable. And what makes this must-visit trip extra pleasurable is the fact that the forest has a rain forest canopy walk, a few wild animals living in the forest and a gorgeous view of KL Tower.

Even for someone like me who is afraid of heights, I braved the canopy walk and deemed this experience simply not to be missed! The view is simply mesmerizing…

After the KL Forest Eco Park, it was almost lunchtime and we decided to head back to the hotel to check into our room and to grab some bites. Along the way back, we couldn’t help but to admire the streets of Lebuh Ampang. A cluster of Indian shops intermixing with some Chinese and Malay shops added much charm as a reminder of our beautiful melting pot of cultures living together.

Despite the relatively standard looking building from the outside, Cosmo Hotel Kuala Lumpur is designed beautifully with various levels leading towards the lobby of the hotel.

A quick check-in our room to freshen up and we headed to Café Mint for our lunch. Part of the City Discovery Package which includes breakfast, set lunch and dinner for two persons, our set lunch was generously portioned. Choices may differ, but the classic Western set lunch is very enjoyable from Fish & Chips to Fried Chicken Chop and Minute Steak. A light array of salad, soup and desserts are included in the set lunch as well.

Café Mint is the hotel’s all-day dining restaurant and is spaciously designed with neutral theme for an easy vibe. The buffet counters are well lite with globes of twinkling lights and brighten up with orchids and local colourful elements. The dining area is well sectioned, offering various spots of dining to choose from.

We head back to our room to rest after that lovely lunch. My room was comfortable and easy on the eye. Nicely spaced, the bed was set in the middle and flanked by the usual bedside tables with lamps. One gets the usual amenities such as the LED television, work desk, cabinet with mini safe box, iron and ironing board, mini fridge with complimentary water, coffee and tea and free in-room wifi.

The bathroom was set next to the bed with a frosted glass door. There is the rain shower and usual shower head bath that is sectioned through another glass panel with the usual bathroom amenities.

Cosmo Hotel Kuala Lumpur has 347 rooms and offers various types of rooms such as Deluxe, Executive, Junior and Studio Suites to cater to one’s need. The location is strategic as it is situated at the bustling area of Leboh Ampang. There are many popular attractions such as Central Market, the historical landmark of Sultan Abdul Samad Building and Merdeka Square, Chinatown closed by within walking distance. Public transportation is also a few minutes away, making it for exploration as well as travels from the airport via KLIA Express through KL Sentral.

The hotel has a gymnasium, five meeting rooms, a boardroom and a lobby lounge along with the all-day dining Café Mint. Do check out their website for special promotions on their rooms.

Cosmo Hotel Kuala Lumpur offers guests a special personal 3-hour guided Cultural Walking Tour priced at RM250 nett per person. Reservations are required and one will be able to learn more about the city’s historical and cultural sites along with a taste of local cuisines.

Our guide that day, Jane Rai was very knowledgeable and informative. From her stories of yesteryears of the city streets, iconic and historical buildings, famous landmarks to The River of Life project, we were certainly captivated with her tales.

The Sultan Abdul Samad Clock Tower

The River of Life Project that will be completed in 2020

The streets behind Masjid Jamek is packed with a personality of its own! Street vendors that sells every imaginable goods and food are seen here with a kaleidoscope of colours on its background. The alleys are simply not to be missed as there is just so much to see, to buy and to eat of course…

We made a quick stop at Jai Hind Restaurant, a Punjabi restaurant known for their signature chapati and curries as well as piping hot and spiced up Masala Tea. Next to Jai Hind, an Indian sweet shop that is set with a delectable list of Indian sweets guaranteed to lure the sweet monster out of every foodie. From Gulab Jamun to Almond Halwa, Jalebi, Barfi, Kesri, Ladoo and more, one can purchase these to try or simply get them from Jai Hind too.

More street adventurous as we wandered through Masjid India and the night market where our nostrils and sight were lured into high frenzy of the array of scrumptious street food.

Piping hot Nasi Lemak, a mere RM1.50 a packet had many queueing up to take these away. My friends had to stop me from joining the queue to buy them…

Apam Balik, a non-stop production of hot crispy pancake filled with choices of peanut, sweet corn, chocolate and more seemed to be a crowd puller as the makers were smiling and chatting with the buyers happily. We did try one and boy-oh-boy, this was a really yummy Apam Balik!

We were lured to this particular Kway Teow Kerang stall for the tantalizing aroma of the breath of wok. This young cook seemed to have mastered the art of the Kway Teow Kerang to a perfect T! We caught him whipping up a few plates of the noodles and they looked superb in colour and aroma. We certainly wished we had time to sit down and grab a plate… oh well, maybe next round…

More goodies and every local kuih muih, Lekor, fruits, drinks and etc is worthy a taste… now only if we had more stomach space for these….

We stopped by one of the oldest cinema in the city – Pawagam Coliseum is still running today with mostly Indian films.

Another quick pit stop to quench our thirst with Gunner A mocktail at the oldest bar in the city - Coliseum Restaurant and Bar!

The back street has this amazing mural of some of the famous fathers of our nations…

More maneuvering through streets where gold merchants are abundance in every corner, young and talented henna painters, textile merchants, songkok makers and barbers are just going on their daily rituals of selling their wares and services.

A last stop at Saravanaa Bhavan restaurant where luscious Vadai and Idly along with Thosai are vegetarian delights not to be missed. These were so well-made, I vowed to return again for these soon.

The tour ended and we made our way back to the hotel for the evening dinner at Café Mint. Barely able to tuck into our dinner from all the samplings earlier, we still enjoyed ourselves unwinding the evening with comfort and company.

A good night rest and we woke up well-rest for breakfast before enjoying some leisure moments and then it was time to check-out. This is one promotion package for those who are seeking a short staycation in the city and perfect for those traveling for business or pleasure.

The City Discovery Package is subjected to weather condition* and advance booking is required**
