Bobo Kuala Lumpur @ Jalan Bangkung

An Extraordinary Night of Good Food & Wine, Art and Music

Hitting all the perfect notes of a fabulous evening filled with scrumptious food and wine, a passionate art collection and a gorgeous piano lounge sums up Bobo Kuala Lumpur. It’s about time too because there’s hardly any place like Bobo KL in our nation that exudes a classy ambiance coupled with a multi-sensory experience of food, art and entertainment under one roof. Owner Ed Soo and other partners, who have been successfully running their restaurants on Jalan Bangkung for years, are bringing in more joie de vivre with their latest venture of Bobo KL.

Bobo radiates a jazz bar scene popular in New York from early eras except its brought up to date with modern contemporary flair. Its concept combines the owners’ love for food, wine, art and music. Bobo occupies two levels on the famous row of shop houses in Jalan Bangkung. Enter the restaurant by its discreet side entrance next to Lucky Bo Restaurant, coincidentally also owned by the same owners.

The first level of Bobo houses the main dining space designed with modern elegance and filled with Ed’s personal art collection. The dining space is cleverly segregated into a main dining area, a casual lounge and a private section for functions. The restaurant serves modern European cuisine injected with creative twists as well as classics. Bobo also has a solid list of wines to go with its menu and is expected to grow with time.

After all that is said, why Bobo we asked Ed. Bobo, as it turns out, is Ed’s favorite huggable pet!

The name Bobo is a tickler but once you have experienced the place, you’ll find that the name does somehow lingers in your mind, reminding you of a wonderful and mesmerizing element that Bobo did with its owner.

Our group of nine shared platters of Starters and Secondos that evening coupled with house whites and reds. Kicking of the lot was golden batons of Polenta Fries (RM24) served with lemon truffle aioli. Sheer simplicity executed with precise crispiness of cornmeal fries filled with creamy deliciousness that had us craving for more.

The Foie Gras Pate (RM45) with cranberry sauce and onion marmalade was one of the best pate I have had. Silky smooth, creamy and decadent with a layer of clarified butter. The unctuous salty notes of the parfait of chicken liver is balanced by touches of tangy cranberry sauce and sweet jammy onion marmalade, all to be savored with toasted baguette. Superb!

For sharing, the Charcuterie & Cheese Board (RM39), a platter of chorizo de pavo, salchicon de pavo, cecina de vacuno, manchego, mahon and rock melon, is indeed a pretty antipasti that whets the appetite for more.

An oceanic harvest of plump, briny and sweet Fresh Irish Oysters (RM38) with extra virgin olive oil and tiny pearls of black caviar hit all the right notes of flavours and textures. Simply add a squeeze of lemon and slurp the whole aphrodisiac down for a taste of heaven…

I have always enjoyed a good arancini. Bobo’s Arancini (RM28) has all the check marks of a yummy Italian rice ball with its crispy shell, creamy and gooey saffron risotto rice with buffalo mozzarella cheese and tangy tomato sauce.

Crudo simply means raw in Italian. The Salmon Crudo (RM34) was executed to near perfection. Sublime salmon slices lightly smothered in olive oil and paired with briny salmon roes, horseradish cream and lemon curd with dill and micro herbs evoked sensations of sultry and luscious flavours. The tingling hit of horseradish elevated the salty ikura together with subtle hints of lemon.

Bobo’s Caesar Salad (RM28) was not what we all expected. Nevertheless, the dish is beautifully scrumptious in every bite. Parmesan mousse on crouton topped with shredded romaine, a wafer of baked parmesan cheese and shavings of parmesan cheese, a pungent strip of brined anchovy, creamy and tangy sauces and a sprinkle of crushed peppers summed up the dish. The whole element just worked in harmonious flavours of a Caesar salad. The wobbly mousse was perfectly set and luscious in flavours. This dish is simply marvelous in every possible way from flavours to textures and creativity.

A classic rendition of an Italian favorite was showcased through Spaghetti ala Bobo (RM42). Slurp on garlicky and spicy aglio olio pumped up with medley of prawns, scallops and squid rings. Extra points for the toasty and aromatic crumbs on the pasta.

Upon seeing the Crisp Paupiette of Barramundi (RM75), I wished I had ordered the dish. A long fillet of barramundi wrapped with thin slices of crisp baked potatoes is served with a bed of braised leeks and a red wine sauce. I managed to taste this and loved the barramundi with the crispy potato blanket. The braised leeks is creamy and sweet with a deep aroma while the red wine sauce was pretty unique.

The Moules Mariniere (RM58) came piled high on a casserole with a side of toasted baguette. Fresh Australian mussels are cooked in white wine with lots of celery, carrot, leeks and onions. The plump mussels was sweet but the sauce was less impressive as it was not seasoned enough. A adjustment of seasoning would have solve this minor thing. It’s still cooked well and our friend who ordered the dish seemed to have no issue polishing it off happily.

I had the Herb-crusted Rack of Lamb (RM75) served with grilled asparagus and dauphinoise potatoes. Succulent pink flesh lamb racks are beautifully crusted with herb crumbs, giving the lamb a crusty texture and delicious herb notes. Savor the lamb with a rich demi-glazed sauce served on the side. The potatoes and asparagus went really well with the lamb too.

After dinner, we went up through a discreetly hidden stairway leading to the second floor of Bobo. Entering the room to the lounge, a bar set with tiles and grey hues of marble top as well as walls is sure to catch one’s attention. More art piece is set as a backdrop to jazz up the bar. One can enjoy their drinks here prior to the show at the piano lounge.

The music room was designed with minimal décor and yet, it commanded an air of elegance. Working with Sean Ghazi, our very own talented artist who has been making a name for himself in America, Ed and the team has also engaged a professional to design and set up the room to achieve exceptional effects for the lighting as well as the acoustic. The venue is really intimate and perfect for a night out of good food, wine and music.

Catch David Gomes on all regular evenings (apart from Mondays and specific dates) from 9.30pm onwards at Bobo Piano lounge. David Gomes is a talented jazz pianist and an amazing singer extraordinaire. We caught him in action that evening and was simply mesmerized with his performances. I wanted the night to last forever, deeply spellbound by interpretation of many classics of jazz as well as other songs.

There are also other artists making special performances such as Sean Ghazi, Stephanie Reese, Tria Aziz, Shanthini Venugopal, Ida Mariana and more to come. It’s a great opportunity to catch our very own local talents set in such an amazing ambiance.

For diners who dine at Bobo that evening, they are entitled to enjoy David Gomes performances at no cover charge or special guest artistes’ performance at 50% off. There will be a cover charge for non-dining guests. Make sure to follow BoboKL Facebook here for the latest line-up.

China House, Beach & Victoria Street @Penang: It May Be Old Soul but It has a New Life!

Sometimes it’s Really Good to Revisit the Past!

Life is strange at times. Most people will tell you to never to look back into the past. Then again, it’s the past that shape our lives. I like to say that revisiting the past can sometimes be a good thing once in a while. With the festive season almost over, I can finally settle down to blog about things dear to my passion. I have seen about this place in a few blogs. And yet, it still escapes my mind till last December when I was making a trip back to Penang.

Once in a lifetime, some people are lucky enough to have one or maybe a few BFFs. Let me tell you a quick one about mine. J, my dear childhood BFF, and I are like day and night. If one ask how we both can be BFF, I‘d say day & night has to meet somewhere and somehow. And so, we bonded somewhere, somehow despite our huge differences. J has been with me through ups and downs, never physically by my side but always there in my heart and thoughts. We have shared so much through the years through many ups and downs and revisiting the past confirmed that this journey is what makes both of us so close to each other.

We always make it a point to meet up each time when we can and since it was the festive Christmas season, J and her little one took me & my little one to China House. Located smacked in the Penang Unesco World Heritage zone, China House can be accessible from two entrances in Beach Street or Victoria Street in Penang. Well known among Penangites , China House was new to me though. If one were to ask me what China House is, I would reply, a bit of entertainment and chow in every possible way!

According to their website here, China House comprises of 14 spaces from 3 heritage buildings of café, restaurant, bar, wine, gallery, multi-purpose performance theatre, shopping and more. It’s an endless experience of what one may seek depending on the time of your visit. You can read in details at their website. I’m sharing what was caught in my lens during a brunch visit there!

Entering from Victoria Street, I walked through The Canteen & Bar where utter peace and not a soul were in sight. Immediately, the Canteen caught my eyes and lens with its eclectic mixed of furniture! From my research, the décor is the brainchild of Narelle and Alison, a dynamic team with an amazing knack to meld and bring old soul mish mash back to a new life!  Filled with odds and ends, amazing enough, it felt very much like one beautiful masterpiece.

Arm chairs and stools, leather and cloth sofas, vintage trunks, wood and steel chairs, you name it, I believe they have it. An old grand piano fitted snugly into a corner, while the metal bar oozed with charm. Walls and ceiling are left in its origin with metal lamps hanging over. Another corner hosts the live band stage. Details of live entertainment are found here.  Upstairs, open at night, hosted a large lounging area filled with more sofas, arm chairs and tables. Guest can play board games, pool, and more.

Moving in, one passes a corridor that lead to the Courtyard where loads of sunshine glared between trees and shades. Walls are graffitied while steel chairs and tables are placed all over the area. A pond provides much needed water element and sound to the ambience. I also spied a few modern steel art pieces. The courtyard is made for some warmness as one soaks in Mother Nature while savoring a selection of burgers and desserts.

Heading through the long courtyard into the main dining area aptly named Kopi C. Espresso. Choose your seats from the long table with huge panel of books for reading or check out their private dining room or wine room. There is also the more relax main dining area of a nice cup of brew and another area for evening dining. Kopi C. serves breakfast    from 9am, lunch from 12noon and dinner from 6pm to 10.30pm.

At the Beach St. Bakery, one will just stand and drool over a long table weighted down with a sweet and savory haven of pastries, pies and desserts! A closed by chiller stock up iced cakes, ice creams and ice pops. Every piece looked utterly delectable, every piece inviting, begging to be savor. It was a hard decision in choice.

All items are freshly baked from the kitchen and I could trail this back to the open kitchen at the courtyard where I spied the treats and its intoxicating aroma. Be enticed by its list of cakes from Passion Fruit Butter Cake, Walnut Espresso, Tiramisu, Chocolate Raspberry Layer, Coconut Cake with Lime Curd, Assorted Cheesecakes, Salted Caramel & Apple Pie, Mince Pies, Date and Macadamia Tart, Bakewell Tart and so much more. Savory Chicken & Eggplant Pie, Beef & Guinness Pie, Quiches and Scones are also present for savory lovers. The list is endless and specials are also available during festive holidays.

I always am a sucker for pineapple in any form I can get. Hence I ordered a refreshing Pineapple Mint Tea (RM10). As expected, fresh and tangy, the fruit juice was tainted with crushed mint and tea. Pretty refreshing!

We shared a little of everything from Cheese Omelette (RM22), Chicken & Eggplant Pie (RM12) to Ginger Bud Pesto Spaghetti with Chicken Breast (RM30). High points go to the omelette with its perfectly cooked center with a glorious soft wobbly and cheesy goodness.  The spaghetti is a myriad of flavors from it vivacious ginger torch aroma to the tinges of spices in the strands of al dente pasta. A little creamy, a little spicy, the herbs make this dish truly fusion in a beautiful way. Chicken was a tad dry though. The chicken pie had a good pastry crust but I thought the filling was a wee bit too minced up.

We had to order dessert, in fact, we made sure to save room for it. Sharing a Passion Fruit Butter Cake (RM10) and Chocolate Berry Torte (RM10), I preferred the sour and tangy flavors of the Passion Fruit Butter Cake. Deliriously sweet, it more than made up as there was a good dose of sourness too. The cake is rich and quite dense and the icing is thickly layered on. The Chocolate Berry Torte was surprisingly not sweet at all but leans towards more on deep dark bitter flavors from cocoa. In fact, we felt that the chef might have forgotten to add sugar to this one as we could not taste any sweetness at all. Bits of berries are studded in the torte while a layer of thick ganache crowned it. I would love to go back to try their Tiramisu and Walnut Espresso.

China House is full of life, old & new!

From its old eclectic décor to its modern food and brew, the charm is certainly there. One is literally transported into another world upon entrance and there is just a little love for everyone. From its graffitied walls, to the collection of antiques, art, food & drinks, live entertainment to the staff there trying to please its customers, the appeal to return is strong. Parking may be a nuisance in some ways but it’s worth the effort.  For what China House is worth, I’d say it’s a great place to visit when one is in Penang. There are simply some things in life that is worth paying for… I’ll be back for sure!

Upon my departure at the Victoria street entrance, I spied a quaint row of old shoplots and one particular door caught my attention with its sign. Sekeping Victoria, wouldn’t you be curious at this name? Peeking into the door unashamedly, I saw large open spaces with a row of bicycles. Consisting of two buildings, the minimal furniture space had a clean and crisp element. Curious and more curious, I found out that Sekeping Victoria is part of the sekeping family of retreats. The retreat is up for rent for any personal or business functions and is also a popular choice for weddings, exhibitions, photograph shoots and more. Its literally an open spaced warehouse concept with suite rooms and other facilities.

Page 2 by Plan b., Publika @Solaris Dutamas: A Groovy New Kid on the Block!

Perking up the Neighborhood with lots of Groove!

Word is out! The latest watering hole in the ever snazzy Publika mall at Solaris Hartamas, Page 2 by Plan b. has taken over the quiet part of the neighborhood. Part of the brilliance of The BIG Group, this groovy creative space is set for musicians and the entertainment industry to release their creative juices here. Located directly above another BIG brainchild, Plan B, Page 2 is like an extension of the comfortable restaurant.

Echoing its sisterhood below, Page 2 sets out to impress its guest with lots of recycled items for the ambience. Impressive and groovy upon sight is the main featured wall of old televisions recycled into an artistic impressionist backdrop for a stage. Blue seemed to be the new color of the season, so the whole place has a cool dim lighting to soothe out a day’s worries.

Ingenious crate palates are turned into sofas while metal cylindrical containers are artistically shaped into chairs and used as tables!  A trendy long bar platformed with loads of beer crates sets a comfy and hip status for the hangout.  Metal office desks lined the corridors of the hangout, echoing a similar haunt of those old school days’ era. Currently, the whole ambience is al fresco with lots of open air view of the neighborhood.

At Page 2, one helps themselves to the cool menu printed on the tables! Cute as it literally saves time waiting although one may need to stretch their necks a bit to read the whole menu… J

Expect lots of brews and potions but a minimal list of chows. While alcohols may dominate the list, fear not fellow non-alcoholics, there are coffee, tea, juices, milkshakes, fizzies and frosties to quench your undying thirst. Small bites to accompany the swills are chips, fries, wings, fried seafood, breads and dips!

As it was an invited event, we were treated to a whirlpool of luscious bites like Guacamole and Nacho chips, Savory Popcorns, Mini Burgers, Meatballs, Roast Duck Sandwich and Mini Lamb Pies!

Bites are probably from Plan b menu so do ask if you could order it at Page 2 or simply head downstairs to get some. The night was filled with Ice Teas, Gin & Tonics and Frosty Beers for some liquid connection while Rocky Road Bars and Mini Lemon Meringues filled up the sweet-tooth cravings.

At Page 2, one does not make lemonades from lemon!

A live band performance hit every musical note that night with groovy soundtracks while everyone chilled out in style…
