Fly Me To Labuan Part 3 – Where to Eat in Labuan

Dining at Dorsett Grand Labuan & Kampung Nagalang Seafood Restaurant

My third post on my Labuan excursion and this time, it’s all about food! As Labuan is located next to the South China Sea, there are plenty of seafood for us everywhere. We even visited a fish market during our trip and boy-oh-boy, was there plenty of seafood that is really reasonably cheap compared to our side of Malaysia.

Before I dived into our seafood meal, I’d love to share all the yummy meals we had at Dorsett Grand Labuan. All food served at the hotel’s outlets is Halal.

Dorsett Grand Labuan Executive Lounge

When we arrived at Dorsett Grand Labuan, we had a quick light meal at the Executive Lounge in the hotel.

The Executive Lounge are open to guests staying at Level 7 and 8 at the hotel. There are complimentary coffee or tea from 7am to 10pm and evening cocktails, canapés and hors d’oeuvres from 4pm to 7pm.

We adored all the pretty mini canapes and desserts served here. These canapes and desserts were also given creative names like Baywatch Oyster in Winter Cold Soup, Fishing in Yemen of Smoked Salmon Roulade with Black Caviar, Pretty Woman Fruit Skewers, Angelina Jolie Strawberry & Blueberry Panna Cotta and more.

Dorsett Grand Labuan Lobby Lounge

After checking into our room and rest a bit, we headed down to the Lobby Lounge for the English High Tea Promotion available daily from 2pm to 6pm. Indulge in a sumptuous English 3-Tier Tea Set or a savory Malaysian 3-Tier Tea Set of your choice. The 3-Tier Tea sets are priced RM35 nett per serving each.

The English High Tea set consists of Assorted Open-Faced Sandwiches or Canapes, Muffins, Scones with Butter, Jam and Cream, Mini Fruit Tartlets, Petit Cakes, Pastries, Mini Puddings and French Macaron.

The Malaysian High Tea set is savory and has Malaysian classics such as Satay, Roti Jala with Chicken Curry, Fried Banana and Sweet Potato and a sweet dessert. I love this set as I prefer savory flavours more than sweet. The Satay and Roti Jala is delicious!

Quench your thirst from the beverage menu from juices to cocktails to beer or alcohol as well as other drinks.

If you are hungry, ask the wait staff if you can order something light like this awesome Fish & Chips my little one! It has got the lightest and crispy batter on the fish and the thick cut chippes were yummy too with the tartare sauce.

Dorsett Grand Labuan Victoria’s Brasserie

Dorsett Grand Labuan’s main restaurant is Victoria’s Brasserie, an all-day-dining that serves scrumptious breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets of local and international fare. There are some live cooking stations to prepare fresh and hot food as well as an array of cold and other hot buffet items. The restaurant is open from 6am to 10.30pm daily.

Victoria’s Brasserie runs different dinner buffet theme every night and while we were there, we savored their Carvery and BBQ Night on a Saturday. The restaurant seems to be a favorite as it was quite a full house on the night we were there. Diners were just enjoying the luscious spread of outdoor BBQ meat and seafood as well as a whole Roasted Lamb and Roast Beef on the carvery. Simply choose your seafood and meat and hand them over to the chefs who was busy grilling outside the restaurant.

The inside buffet counters are laden with seafood on ice, cold and hot appetizers of terrines, salads, cold cuts. There are live stations serving freshly fried Tempura, Teppanyaki, Beef Shabu Shabu as well as noodles with soup. Hot buffet warmers showcase an abundance of local and international dishes.

There was a super delish Curry Fish Head as well as a 5kg Grouper smothered in Chef Mohd Afifi’s signature spicy and sweet sauce and Lo Hon Chai!

Desserts are always a great way to end any meal with a sweet touch. From Chocolate Fountain to fruits, cakes, mini desserts, puddings, tarts, pies and more! Watch out for the Coconut Pudding available a la carte that is so refreshing and sweet.

I celebrated my birthday at this trip and let me raved about this Rainbow Cake! Normally I am not a fan but this one won a lot of hearts that night. The cake was beautifully moist and flavourful. With cream cheese icing, the cake was divine. It’s a signature cake of Dorsett Grand Labuan and made by the in-house chef.

Dinner buffet theme includes Passage to Thai, Italian Flavour, Steamboat Night, International Chinese Cuisine, Taste of America and Seafood & BBQ Night. Find out more on their Facebook and website.

We also had our breakfast at Victoria’s Brasserie throughout our stay and enjoy a very decent spread of breakfast favorites. Freshly baked croissant that goes from oven on the counter straight to the basket, thick French Toasts with lots of condiments, pastries and bread, cakes, muffins, donuts, scones and more are equally tempting with touches of sweetness to kick of the day.

Salads, cold cuts, cheese, hot buffet warmers filled with sausages, beef bacon, baked tomatoes, hash browns and more takes on the savory approach. An egg station is also available for fresh eggs prepared to order.

The local breakfast favorites of noodles, Nasi Lemak, Roti and curries as well as some rice and fried noodles with some dishes are another popular hotspot for diners. The Nasi Lemak is superb as it has a lovely creamy and fluffy coconut rice paired with a sweet and spicy sambal. The restaurant also does catering for Nasi Lemak and more as we also enjoy them on our outside expeditions.

Cold juices, milk, smoothies, cereals, yogurt, fruits are also available.

Kampung Nagalang Seafood Restaurant

Labuan is also a seafood paradise so it’s a no-brainer that we must enjoy some seafood on this trip. We visited a hidden gem out of our hotel and was really pleased with Kampung Nagalang Seafood Restaurant. The seafood restaurant is set on wood stilts out by the sea. There is a short walk on the wooden bridge to the restaurant, adding some charm to the place. The evening was cool and breezy as we strolled to the main dining area in restaurant in anticipation of a seafood feast to come.

There is just something really pleasurable about dining seafood by the waters. As we walked into the restaurant, tanks after tanks of fresh live seafood are set to tempt us. There are also plenty of seafood placed on ice for ordering. One can select your own seafood and have the chef prepared it to your liking as well as even buying the seafood for takeaway. If you do want to buy the seafood, do check with Dorsett Grand Labuan as they have a packing service for seafood with a minimal charge.

Our first dish to arrive had us giggling with glee at it’s unique presentation. Prawn Salad with Fruits and Salted Egg Yolk Prawn are creatively presented in a whole honey dew melon. The Salad Prawn are stuffed into the melon with a creamy sweet fruit salad. The Salted Egg Yolk Prawn are served on spoons. The combination is a medley of sweetness and savory notes. It’s a yin and yang dish that won many hearts that night.

Next up, Slipper Lobster is one of my favorite seafood and this one was Slipper Lobster Stir Fried with Salted Egg. I enjoy the bouncy meat of the slipper lobster with the sublime salted egg flavour. Cooked in shells, the meat is also very sweet and succulent.

Crispy White Bait had us all munching happily. Golden, lightly battered, crunchy and well-seasoned with salt, pepper and other aromatics, it’s an easy dish to savor.

Call it what you want – Mani Chai, Lakia Chai, Sayur Manis or Dayak Vegetables, this green vegetable is particularly a favorite in Sabah and Borneo. Ours was Stir Fried Mani Chai with Egg. The leafy green has a natural sweetness and tenderness unique to its kind. One can even buy this vegetable from the restaurant.

We also had Stir Fried Bamboo Clam with Dried Chili. Resembling the Kung Pao style, the plump bamboo clams was nicely cooked and coated in the sticky sweet and spicy sauce before being finished with a sprinkling of salty peanuts. Yummy and very addictive…

Steamed Sea Chicken Fish was probably the highlight of our meal. The name is loosely translated from its Chinese name as the fish has a smooth firm flesh with a very beautiful sweetness. Highly prized as well, our fish was steamed the classic Chinese way with superior soy sauce. Notice the tiny blobs of orange goodness on the fish? That is the creamy fish roes from the fish. We really enjoyed the velvety firm flesh of the fish with the moreish soy sauce. It is truly worthy to be able to try this fish as it is quite rare to catch one this size.

Another must order seafood in Labuan is crabs! We opted for the Kam Heong Crabs. The meat crabs are of decent size and has sweet flesh. Even though the kam heong flavours are pungent, I can still taste the sweetness of the crab meat. There are over 10 ways to prepare these crab at Kampung Nagalang so choices are plenty for the discerning palate.

Wash all the seafood down with tall icy glasses of Blended Sar Lei Juice with Sour Plums
