The Butcher’s Table @ Pavilion Kuala Lumpur

Meat-ing Expectation

Talk about a blast from the past… somethings should always make a comeback! In this case, it did… The Butcher’s Table is the newer offspring of Mr. Ho Kim Loon, who was more renowned with his first offspring of Mr. Ho’s Fine Foods. Back in late 1990s, foodies know where to go for exceptional roast pork and premium sausages and that is at Mr. Ho.

After a hiatus from the food scene, the Ho family decided to make their comeback with The Butcher’s Table first outlet in SS2 few years ago. Roping in his kids now, they have recently opened a new outlet in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur in late February this year but had to close due to the recent pandemic situation.

The Butcher’s Table is now open, and diners are in for a meaty treat. Talk about meat-ing expectation… the restaurant is located on level 7 and offer diners several section of dining areas along with a private room as well. We like the simplicity and modern ambiance where smart casual vibes allow diners to enjoy a hearty meal from this delicatessen.

The menu is filled with lots of choices of meat and poultry with a few seafood thrown in for good measure. Most of Mr. Ho’s signatures are present along with a few newbies. Add-on a very affordable wine list, diners are set for an unforgettable dining experience of beefy and swine-ful dishes!

Perhaps the Crispy Roast Pork (RM17.50 | RM25.00 with one side) would be the perfect choice of appetizer to kick off here. After all, Mr. Ho’s legendary Siew Yuk is what most of us remembered him for. And disappoint us it did not after a decade… the crispy roast pork is still fabulously yummy.

Meatology by Chef Yenni @ TTDI

Sumptuous Festive and New Menu

Behind every successful restaurant is an amazing chef… and behind Meatology is Chef Yenni Law. Chef Yenni has so much passion and energy in what she does, and it certainly shows in Meatology. The talented chef that wears multiple hats has two published cookbooks – Meatology and The Rice Pot under her name and the latter one has earned 1st place for the best in the prestigious and internationally recognized Gourmand Award in May 2018 held at Yantai, China.

Meatology has already carved a name in the neighborhood for scrumptious porky fare. Chef Yenni offers classic favorites with her own twist. She goes all out to roast her own Roast Pork and offers tableside entertainment of flambéing steaks to desserts. Locals know where to head to for comfort food and she greets all her diners like they were her old friends.

There’s just no rest with Chef Yenni and her culinary team. With much festivity around the corner, Chef Yenni has prepared festive dishes along with Roast Turkey for orders. In addition, diners can check out the contemporary Western Meatology’s new menu filled with her signatures as well as new dishes with local twists.

For turkey lovers, Meatology offers Roast Turkey (RM58.80++) in smaller portion so one can still enjoy the Christmas dish without having to have a big party. The platter offer cuts of dark and white meat of the turkey, perfectly roasted with a lovely tasty note and moistness. The Roast Turkey is accompanied by grape, chestnut & bacon stuffing, giblet gravy and a spiked cranberry & rum sauce.

For those who are planning a festive party or dine-in group, go for the Whole Roast Turkey (RM428++) with the trimmings. There are additional perks such as a free dining voucher worth RM130 and a half yard glass that comes with this order. This one requires a 3-day advance notice for an order.

For appetizers, diners can tuck into a tasty Grilled Cincaluk Pork (RM23.80). Marrying the flavours of local cincalok or prawn paste with pork belly, the result is this unctuous and addictive sliced pork belly with a unique smoky aroma. And if it ain’t enough, she considerately serves this with some chopped chili padi for extra kicks!

They say one eats with their eyes first… the Tempeh & Chickpea (RM13.80) is cleverly served on a bright blue plate, making it even more enticing with the vibrant colors. Perfect as meatless option, batons of nutty tempeh is sauced up with a lightly sweet and savory sauce. Served on a bed of chickpeas and peas, its healthy and tasty too.

Chef Yenni has a good sense of pairing unsual ingredients and she puts some humor in coining Ladies Lap Cheong (RM13.80). Lady fingers are pairing with sliced Chinese lap Cheong and lots of fried garlic crisp with a bit of heat from chili flakes. The dish turned out well, as the sweetish lap Cheong elevated the lady fingers well. This is one dish I would order again.

Banking on the typical English Sunday roast, Chef Yenni serves up Roast Pork (RM38.80) on Sundays at Meatology. A platter of nicely cut chunks of golden and crunchy crackling roast pork can surely make all Sundays even better, at least for me. And if you are even thinking of feeling a bit guilty, the roast pork is balanced by the side of greens for extra comfort.

More appetizers followed and the Mentaiko Gratinade Baby Lobster (RM23.80++) is an absolute stunner. Mentaiko or fish roe has such a moreish flavour profile that it pairs well with seafood to bring out the oceanic flavours. The baby lobster is cooked beautifully while the gratin makes the lobster even more delectable.

Moving on to mains, the Seared Grouper with Caper Lime Butter (RM48.80) is perfect for fish lovers. Thick fillet of grouper cooked well and served with the citrusy butter sauce. The capers and chopped preserved vegetable enhanced the fish really well, lending a umami saltish note. Presentation is excellent as the dish is colorful and attractive as well.

If there is one dish to rave at Meatlogy, the Spicy Sour Cream Spiney Lobster with Chips (RM178.80) would be it. The brilliant pairing of thick cut fries to go with that luscious buttery and spiced up sauce is so sumptuous that we wanted more fries. The lobster is cooked well with a firm tenderness while the creamy sauce gave the dish that fragrant oomph that makes this dish so enticing. If you feel like splurging, this is the dish to order…

When the waitstaff flambé the octopus, it was apparent that this was going to be another good dish! Grilled Spanish Octopus Tentacle with Spiked Concasse & Garlic (RM43.70) is enticingly aromatic from the spiked flambe action and goes well with the rich cream sauce along with mushrooms on al dente fettuccine and finished with briny salmon roes. This dish is very rich so sharing this may be a good idea. I loved the octopus tentacle as it was tender and goes well with the slippery smooth pasta.

A beautifully poached egg nestled on a bed of mushroom and pasta with pea sprouts peeking upwards. The Truffle Spaghetti (RM35.80) is so good, one won’t miss the fact that this is meatless. The soft egg coated the pasta and mushroom strands, lending a smoothness of richness to the gorgeous aroma of truffles lingering with each bite.

Chef Yenni nailed the Grilled Grain-fed Aged Ribeye (RM35/100g) to a lovely medium doneness. Utterly juicy and well-charred, the ribeye is served with mashed potato, chick pea salad and side of horseradish. The steak, seasoned with only salt and pepper, has such yummy beefy flavours. A touch of horseradish added more depth of richness to the steak…

Lip smacking yum best describes the Chilli Lime Ribs (RM48.80)! Meaty ribs are heavily spiced up so that every bite of the meat is an explosion of spicy goodness in the mouth. Make sure to squeeze that wedge of lime on the ribs as it really perked up the flavours even more.

Chef Yenni surprised us all with Herbal Seafood Toddy (RM48.80). Coconut toddy laced with Chinese herbs made up the broth for rice noodles and plenty of seafood. The dish has a similar flavour profile with bak kut teh but it has lovely aroma of coconut. The subtle sweetness from the coconut toddy goes well with the fresh seafood and the noodles made this a complete meal on its own.

Life is always sweeter with desserts! And the fact that desserts can only get better is when its a Real Rum & Raisin Pie (RM18.80). Generously laced with run and studded with sweet raisins, this naughty ice cream pie is so yummy. This is one dessert that you may not want to share…

Forbidden Rice Brulèe (RM14.80) is unusual and tasty. French custard with chewy bits of black glutinous rice and a caramelized crunchy topping is Chef Yenni’s take on rice pudding. Love the chilled factor in this rice pudding as it freshened up the palate.

More flambé action and this time is a dessert of Yorkshire Pudding Flambé (RM32.80). Fluffy and crisp Yorkshire Pudding is jazzed up with a flambe of dark cherries and strawberries with booze. It is quite the perfect dramatic ending when dining at Meatology!

Master Chef Kitchen @ Garden Shoppe OneCity

Feasting on Hong Kong Roasts!

Some food just never goes out of trend. Some never cease to satiate foodies like me. Some just are classically delicious and can never be enough for anyone. One of these kinds of food is the much consumed and much sought after Chinese roast meat and poultry. Yes, I am talking about Roast Pork, Roast Duck, Roast Chicken, Char Siew and more but you get my drift, right?

I swear a plate of Roast Pork would make my day 10 times better than anything else. So when we were invited to Master Chef Kitchen by Chris from Pureglutton, we were excited at the thoughts of glorious Hong Kong style roasts meat and poultry. Master Chef Kitchen is located at One City in Subang. It is set in a shop lot at the Garden Shoppe outside the big One City mall. It’s been 3 months since they have opened and many have yet to be aware of the signatures of their Hong Kong style roasts. Master Chef Kitchen’s roast master hailed from Hong Kong and has more than 20 years of experience in the art of Roast.

The ambience is spacious, simple and neat. It’s decorated with simplicity in mind with basic wood furniture, tiled walls, practical cement flooring and industrial lamps. There is a long counter where diners can catch some kitchen actions. Choose from regular seating tables to banquette seatings.

Master Chef Kitchen’s menu highlights their Hong Kong roast meats and poultry but they also have a list of Chinese dishes that one can enjoy with rice or noodles. Before our mains arrive, we had soups. Now we all know that it is pretty much a must for most Chinese meals, especially Cantonese, to start a meal with soup. A good soup should have great depth of flavours with good base of meaty essence. Suffice to say, Master Chef Kitchen does a few types of double-boiled soups in their menu.

We had two and both are beautifully tasty and comforting. Homestyle Lotus Root Soup and Sweet Corn & Buddha Palm Soup have all the makings of a full-bodied soup with lots of warming essence. The chef uses sufficient ingredients hence both soups are delicious from the long hours of simmering.

The first dish to arrive was Beef Char Siew (RM25), an unctuous plate of Australian beef marinated and roasted till tender and doused with a robust and sweet Char Siew sauce. The dish is perfected through time and even won an award under beef category in a Chinese Muslim culinary competition. It’s got a heavier beefy flavour than the classic Char Siew but nevertheless tasty and fork tender.

I highly doubt many will be able to resist this platter of golden crispy Roast Pork. It was so good, we even forgot to ask the price. One can see the layers of pork belly moist and glistening with translucent bits of fats. The crackling of the skin is sinful and addictive. Master Chef Kitchen’s Roast Pork is heavenly and simply a must-order…

Roast Duck (RM16 to RM68) is another signature that one must try at Master Chef Kitchen. Chef Chan uses a younger duck for his roast because the duck has less fat and has a finer meat texture. The Roast Duck has a gorgeously hued rich deep amber lacquered skin. The skin is superb in taste while the flesh is tender, juicy and flavoured with a scent of spices and herbs. Served in its own jus, we simply cannot get enough of the Roast Duck.

Another unique signature of Chef Chan is the Long Jing Tea Smoked Chicken (RM18 – RM50). Chicken braised in special ‘lou sui’ and then smoked with Dragon Well tea leaves. It is served with a dark aromatic sauce that is lightly savory and sweet with a nice tea aroma. The chicken is moist and goes well with the side of Hong Kong style ginger and spring onion sauce.

To go with all the luscious roasts, Master Chef Kitchen serves rice and noodles as well. We had their Fish Soup Wantan Prawn Noodle which is available in soup or dry. The wantan noodle has got a good firm bite and is sufficiently dressed in the classic soy sauce for the dry version. The soup version is also comforting and tasty. Prawn wantans fared well too with a good filling of prawns.

We also tried some a la carte dishes from their dinner menu as well. Master Chef Kitchen serves up more comfort classics such as Braised Soft Pork Ribs and Steamed Fish with Bean Curd and Wood Fungus.

The Braised Soft Pork Ribs is a pretty satisfying dish to be enjoyed with rice. The salty notes of the thick sauce enveloped the soft pork ribs beautifully together with pieces of tender carrot and radish. It’s moreish and lip-smacking yum!

Fish lovers will be please at the choice of Steamed Fish with Bean Curd & Wood Fungus. It’s a Cantonese classic that highlights the fish well as the delicate bean curd or tau kan and wood fungus are both light in flavours. Coupled with the supreme soy sauce, one can really enjoy the freshest of the fish that way.

For vegetable, we had a very delicious Stir Fried Lotus Root with Nuts and Fermented Bean Curd. This one is really yummy and all the ingredients worked well together. Lotus roots, celery, almond flakes and macadamia nuts are given a quick stir fried and every ingredient retained its lovely crunchy textures.

My little one loves Fried Rice (RM14.50) and got his wish. It had good wok hei and well-seasoned. One can even enjoy this with all the roast meats…

Chef Chan also has a few Hong Kong snacks under his menu. Hong Kong style Baked Polo Buns and Kai Tan Chai or Bubble Waffle proved to be a hit, especially the Kai Tan Chai!

The Baked Polo Buns has that golden signature crusty top with a soft bun filled with sweet and sticky Char Siew filling. The Kai Tan Chai is so aromatic and full of eggy flavours. You get crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. We love the Kai Tan Chai so much we had three portions of this. That’s how good the Kai Tan Chai is…

Master Chef Kitchen also has lunch sets available and for under RM10, diners gets to choose from 21 options from their lunch set menu that also comes with free drink. Highlights of Master Chef Kitchen are all their Hong Kong style Roasts, homemade soups and Kai Tan Chai of course!
