MLA Golden Bull Culinary Competition 2019 and MLA Iron Butcher Challenge 2019



Culinaire Malaysia 2019 has chefs raising their hats to new heights in the culinary world in Malaysia recently. The annual culinary event has chefs from all over the world battling it out for a series of competitions and challenges that showcases exceptional culinary skills and creativity as well as teamwork. With over 1,500 entries and more than 1,000 culinary professionals at this Culinaire Malaysia 2019, it’s certainly a battle of the chefs vying for the title and bragging rights as well as monetary prizes.

Held at The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, the Food & Hotel Malaysia (FHM) 2019 and Culinaire Malaysia 2019 takes placed for the eighth consecutive time from 24 – 27 September 2019. Meat Livestock Australia (MLA), the main sponsor of two major culinary competition, has chefs all over the world taking the Golden Bull Culinary Competition and MLA Iron Butcher Challenge.




The 2019 Golden Bull Culinary Competition has 9 teams of chefs from Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Korea, China, Brunei and Taiwan battling it out to curate a 3-course menu featuring the versatility of Australian beef and lamb. Judging criteria includes taste, professional preparation, presentation, mise-en-place and service.



The atmosphere was intense as the teams competed in a four-day competition within a 3-hour battle to produce their menu of beef and lamb by True Aussie Beef and Lamb sponsors Stanbroke, Murray Pure and Thomas Foods.





At the end of the competition, our very own local Doubletree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur reigned supreme as the Champion of the2019 Golden Bull Culinary Competition! The team walked away with cash prize of RM6,888 and challenge trophy with their menu.


The Royal Brunei Catering bagged the 1st Runner-Up title and walked away with cash prize of RM5,888 and challenge trophy as well as medals while The Fudehui Group from China grabbed the 2nd runner-up spot with cash prize of RM3,888, trophy and medals.





The Royal Brunei Catering menu includes Marble Beef Striploin with Potato Mushroom, Glazed Baby Carrot & Beef Jus, Grilled Beef Striploin with Thai E-Sam Sauce, served with Sticky Rice Ball & Stir-Fry Beef Eggplant and Lamb Chump Cabbage Ball with Spicy & Sour Soup with Pickle Cherry Tomato Crispy Rice Sheet & Lemon Gel.





The Fudehui Group menu of Steamed Beef with Mongolia Onion, Fried Lamb with Crispy Almonds, Crispy Beef with White Sesame & Chili Powder and Lamb Stuffed Mushrooms.





The Fun Chef Taiwan Team may not have won the highest title but put up good efforts in their beautiful and colourful menu showcasing Taiwan’s classic Guo Bao with Beef and Lamb Roulade along with other dishes.







It was certainly a commendable effort to all the chefs who raises the bar this year with their gorgeous dishes!


The judges were in deep discussion as it was a very competitive challenge with all the amazing skills and creativity of the teams this year…


Another MLA sponsored competition had 21 individual chefs from retail and food-service sector sharpening up their knives in the MLA Iron Butcher Challenge. The chefs are given an hour and a half to to cut and portion beef and lamb into a variety of cuts for different cooking methods and flavours. Judging is based on skill sets of butchering, good hygiene practices, cost effectiveness, cleanliness of work station, presentation and more.

Also present for the event was Mr. Michael Growder, Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia with Mr. David Carew, MLA Supply Chain Consultant and judge and Ms. Rose Yong of MLA Country Manager for Asia.


It was a scramble to the very end for these chefs as they worked hard to portray their butchering skill sets. The chefs also prep up the respective cuts of meats with various portioning, seasoning as well as churning them into sausages, meatballs and meat skewers.




At the end of the competition, the judges gave their professional feedbacks to the participants…







Muhamad Adam Yahya from Sama-Sama Hotel KLIA was declared the 2019 MLA Iron Butcher Champion and was awarded RM3,000 along with a special knife set, a challenge trophy and a certificate of achievement.


The 1st Runner-Up of the 2019 MLA Iron Butcher Challenge was Muhammad Faizal Mokhzir from Atlas Gourment Sdn Bhd and 2nd Runner-Up was Mohamad Fauzan Abdul Rahman from Hero Market Sdn Bhd. Both bagged cash prizes of RM2,000 and RM1,000 respectively along with a challenge trophy and a certificate of achievement.



Another successful event of the year, it was a great effort put up by all teams for the MLA Golden Bull Culinary Competition and MLA Iron Butcher Challenge!
