Suria Café, The Saujana Hotel Kuala Lumpur: It’s Time for A Penang Food Fest!

A signature of the Pearl of the Orient!

March is apparently the month of Penang Food Fest and since I am a Penangite, not much can hold me back from jumping at the invitation to a feast of Penang’s favorite hawker food! From 1st March to 14th March, The Saujana Hotel Kuala Lumpur is proud to present the Penang Food Fest at Suria Café featuring live stations of hawker fares.

The Saujana Hotel Kuala Lumpur has proudly brought in three chefs from Penang –Chef Badrol, Chef Desmond and Chef Wafi for this feast. Each chef specialized in various Penang dishes and showcased favorite ones in the feast. The three charming chefs are as humble as their dishes and were sporting when asked to pose for pictures!

Chef Badrol is living his dream. Cooking has enabled him to travel as he loves to explore new cuisine and create new fusion recipes for friends and loved ones. Chef Desmond has earned his keep sweating it out in Chinese kitchens all over Penang and specializes in the fine art of Chinese Cuisine. Chef Wafi is a sought after chef in Penang having performed in Malaysia and Penang Food promotions all over Asia. He has wowed numerous local and foreign dignatries with his great passion for the art of cooking.

Suria Café was transformed into a street affair with stalls serving local Penang fare. Most of Penangites’ favorites like Penang Asam Laksa, Penang Char Koay Teow, Penang White Curry Mee, Penang Chee Cheong Fun, Penang Char Koay Kak, Oh Chien, Penang Lam Mee, Penang Mee Goreng Mamak and Penang Hokkien Mee are available on alternate basis during this feast!

Loved the Penang Asam Laksa as it had a good balance of sour, sweet, spicy and savory flavors. The robust soup is filled with the essential fish flavors and flakes for texture. Kick-it up another notch by drizzling in the pungent and essential prawn paste or ‘Hei Kor’!

Another note worthy is the Penang Mee Goreng Mamak! Quite a few of us were raving about the slurpi-li-cious yellow noodles fried with great finesse and flavors.

I am glad the Penang Chee Cheong Fun had the pungent ‘Hei Kor’ as this is the ultimate trademark of the island’s thin rice noodles!

Start off the journey of the Pearl of the Orient with Sotong Kangkung, Pasembur Udang, Penang Rojak or Popiah Basah to whet your appetitie!

There are also offerings of various Asian hot foods such as Daging Rendang, Kari Udang Nanas, Kari Ikan Bawal Hitam, Ayam Masak Madu, Ketam Goreng Berempah, Stir-Fried Beef with Ginger and Spring Onion, Braised Duck with Water Chestnut and Bamboo Shoot. I also spied a few Western dishes from the hot buffet like Grilled Lamb Chops with Minted Goats Cheese Crust and Buttered Cauliflower with Broccoli with Roasted Sun-Dried Tomatoes.

Beef Rendang is a Must-Have for me as the creamy and rich spiced up curry was a haven of flavors while the beef is so tender, one only needs a fork to savor the curry. I had two helpings of this fabulous rendang! Black Pomfret Fish Curry is also thick and creamy. Rice is required to savor the gorgeous curry. J

The cold sections features an array of various Asian and Western salads and smoked meats while there were two soups to fill one’s tummy as a comfort starter.

The dessert sections features an array of Nyonya Kuih, Apom Pisang, Pulut Hitam, followed by some international ones like Bread and Butter Pudding, Cheesecakes, Pecan Pie, Chocolate Truffle Cake and a lovely array of fresh fruits. End your journey with ice cold Ais Batu Campur or a cup of sweet Teh Tarik!!
