Coquo Restaurant & Wine Bar @ Solaris Dutamas (Publika)

Mother’s Day Menu

Open in April 2016, Coquo Restaurant and Wine Bar is an elegant speakeasy restaurant and wine bar yet to be fully discovered by many. For gourmands who makes extra effort in seeking out Coquo, they certainly know how to return for an unforgettable culinary journey of modern cuisine.

Located in Solaris Dutamas, just right above a popular hangout bar named Barfly, Coquo is helmed by Spanish chef extraordinaire, Chef Toni Valero together with partner Tricia Kandiah. Tricia first met Toni when she dined at Ohla Tapas & Cocktails, where Toni was working previously. Through mutual passion for the love of food, they ventured on their first restaurant together with Coquo.

Coupled with Valero’s impressive resume which boasts of Michelin star establishments in Spain like El Cellar de Cane Roca (El Cellar) and Mugaritz, diners are in for a gastronomical journey of flavours like no other on our Malaysian shore. Having successful stints in London, Barcelona and was even responsible for the popular Ohla Tapas, Valero hopes to embark on a new culinary journey of modern cuisine at Coquo.

At first sight, Valero remains reserve and direct but as we progressed through the dining experience, Valero speaks passionately about the culinary world with much pride on where his vision for the modern cuisine is heading towards. The very talented and meticulous chef show exceptional culinary foresight through the use of Malaysia’s local produce combine with modern culinary skills and techniques. Foraying into the world of molecular gastronomy, Valero uses various modern culinary techniques to showcase the best of our local produce to its best potential. It is only when the local ingredient is not available, the chef will then outsource it from elsewhere in the world.

Coquo, which translate to I cook in Latin, is designed with elegance and easement in mind of diners enjoying great food and wine set in smart casual ambiance. Pure wood and leather takes precedence in the theme of the décor as well as artist Thomas Powell’s Banksy style art reflects the speakeasy’s concept of food and wine. Elegant, mysterious as well as exquisite modern flavours brought together by the skill of Valero and his team sums up Coquo.

The restaurant and wine bar currently carries over 80 labels of wine with a small and tight menu that changes every four months.

Through the eyes of the famous personalities of the Banksy art mural who has created history in the culinary world such as Audrey Hepburn, Ferran Adria, Louis Pasteur, Joan Roca, Andoni Luis Aduriz, Aretha Franklin, Bob Marley and Salvador Dali, Valero hopes to create his own gastronomic history in the culinary scene in the city.

This Mother’s Day month, Valero takes his inspiration from non-other than his beloved mother’s recipes to bring diners a taste of Spanish dishes prepared the Valero way. Though Coquo menu doesn’t focus solely on Spanish cuisine, Valero speaks fondly of his yesteryears of growing up and enjoying his mother’s cooking, saying that the memories of that flavours are priceless. In tribute of his heritage and his mother, Valero brings forth two special dishes available only for a limited time during this Mother’s day in Coquo.

Gazpacho is said to originate from the southern Spanish region of Andalusia but today, it’s widely savored all over Spain and Portugal, especially during summertime when the hot weather is cooled down with this chilled soup. Valero whips up his gazpacho from his childhood flavours in his mother’s kitchen and elevates the chilled soup with slipper lobsters from Johor in Gazpacho with Grilled Lobster and Cured Egg Yolk (RM 48++).

Succulent lobster tails poached to perfection is paired with brunoise of bell peppers while the gazpacho is poured at table side on to the crustacean. The gazpacho has vibrant freshness of sweet tomatoes along with peppers, garlic and herbs. Velvety smooth and fairly thick, each spoonful of gazpacho was fresh and heavenly on the palate, leaving me satiated for more to come.

Through tedious efforts and days in the kitchen, Valero creates an intense and smoky caramelized sofrito for his base of Spanish Bomba rice cooked paella style. Tomatoes slow cooked over 8 hours in Jasper oven, a seafood stock that screams crustacean essence, Iberico pork ribs sous vide over 14 hours and more is meticulously prepared in honor of his interpretation of his mother’s dish of Pork Rib & Crab Rice (RM 58 ++).

The result is perfection of a cast iron pan of smoky and unctuously creamy al dente rice with crusty bits, served with delectable and fabulous Iberico pork ribs and sweet chunks of crab meat from our very own Pulau Ketam shore. Talk about flavours, this plate is jam-packed with rich and luscious flavours that is heighten with porky ribs and crab. The dish is divine… so much so that you may not want to share this with anyone else.

Apart from the special Mother’s Day menu, one should not miss the Prawn Carpaccio (RM38 ++) from the regular menu. Locally sourced prawns, artfully bundled and sliced carpaccio style is served with Laksa caviar, prawn cracker and spicy Laksa oil.

When asked what inspired the dish, Valero immediately says that one of his favorite local dish is Sarawak Laksa. Inspired by the rich flavours of the laksa, he uses molecular technique to create laksa caviar pearls to be paired with the prawn carpaccio on crackers. Everything is literally made from scratch, including the laksa paste he uses to create the laksa caviar downright to the crackers.

When savored together, this dish is truly memorable on the palate. Lush flavours of popping caviar of creamy and spicy laksa, sweet prawns, crispy prawn rice crackers and hints of spicy oil is a clever compilation unlike any other dish that I have ever tasted. Addictive as well as moreish, we kept going back for more of this delectable dish.

Just when we thought that nothing could outdo that excellent Prawn Carpaccio, Valero brought out his Curry Leaf Ice Cream (RM22 ++) served with strawberry Szechuan pepper and jasmine green tea gelatin.

Wait a minute, I had to ask Valero again to reaffirm what I heard, strawberries with Szechuan pepper and curry leaf ice cream? Try it first, he says.

Upon savoring the curry leaf ice cream on its own, it was an instant hit of cold and smooth sensation of cream and aromatic curry leaves. There is no sweetness at all in the ice cream but rather just notes of rich cream and curry leaves.

And then we savored the ice cream with the strawberries set in light floral jasmine green tea and what a turnaround. The strawberries were sweet and fruity with a lovely tang, smoothen out by the aromatic ice cream. Then you get an after subtle hit of heat from the peppers creeping slowly up which really gave the dessert an element of surprise. The duo of cold and heat really works wondrous on the palate. Kudos to Valero for his brilliance on combining unusual ingredients together and this extraordinary dessert!

If you’re looking for a culinary journey like no other, Coquo is the place to be. Intimate, excellent modern cuisine, impeccable service and a menu that truly epitomize gastronomic sensations, Coquo is a haven for those seeking adventurous culinary journey as well as a place to unwind with good wines and company. Meat the Porkers @ Solaris Dutamas

Hogging the Limelight in Indian Cuisine

Talk to me about swine and I will swoon. Shamelessly biased about my love for the hog, I get excited when I hear about dishes made with it. So when Meat the Porkers came on board the culinary scene in November last year, it was big news.

Well truth be told, of course it would be big news. Never in our Indian culinary scene have we had a porky Indian restaurant or even porky Indian dishes. In fact, I would daresay it’s probably a first in Asia! Owner Herukh Jethwani, you would know him from Fierce Curry House, has been tossing his idea of taking Indian cuisine to new heights for years. Despite the unknown, he and his missus was ready to introduce porky Indian delights to our culinary scene, taking the swine into limelight in his heritage cuisine.

After toying the idea for a while, it turned out harder than he thought. Not having the knowledge in the other white meat, he had to really go through a lot but he finally made it. Even then, Herukh tested his porky creations from takeaway orders from his home too. Meat the Porkers finally opened and the rest they say is history.

Located in Publika area, the restaurant has a minimalist industrial vibe that exudes much casualness. Colorful boxy shelves with cute hogs reminded us again what we were here for. Opt for dining in the main dining area or simply al fresco.

It’s quite the thrill to see a menu that reads Siew Yoke Biryani, Tandoori Pork Ribs, Butter Pork and Bacon Cheese Naan. I just couldn’t wait to savor the dishes…

For starters, there’s Pork Pakora (RM20). Yep, you heard me… not onion pakora, not vegetable pakora but Pork Pakora served with mint chutney. These crispy nuggets of porky bits with spices and aromatics tasted so moreish, you’ll want a bucket of these. Oh wait, that’s me that wants the bucket… it’s that good!

Then there’s Pork Seekh Kebab (RM28). Moist and tender, these kebab pieces are very tasty with all the spices and herbs. Served with mint chutney too, I personally didn’t think it needed it as it was already so tasty.

When the Tandoori Pork Ribs (RM48) landed on our table, there was certainly a lot of oohs and aahs in amazement. The sight of glorious meaty pork ribs basted in the classic reddish tandoori marinade and chargrilled in a tandoor oven had everyone at the table salivating.

Don’t know how we managed to resist not attacking the ribs but rather let our camera and phone eat first was a definitely a mystery to us. The ribs is picture perfect with all its colors.

A quick cut up, the ribs looked juicy and very meaty. Expect lovely well-balance tandoori flavours with a slight tang and a good dose of smoky notes. Although it’s tender, I like how it still has a good bite. The Tandoori Pork Ribs come with lemon, mint chutney, pol sambal and tamarind BBQ sauce. Squeeze the lemon over the pork and then sprinkle the pol sambal all over the ribs as advised by Herukh. Then enjoy these with both sauces for different flavours. Lip smacking good…

Then the star of the menu showed up. Siew Yoke Biryani (RM28), hidden in the usual biryani bowl and seal with dough to keep in the aroma and flavours. The roasted pork biryani comes with sides of curry sauce, yoghurt sauce, pol sambal and pork cracklings. I am super glad the pork crackling is served on the side because this means that it will be crispy.

When the lid came off, we were hit with a wonderful aroma of spices. The biryani long grain rice was fluffy with beautiful yellow hue providing the base for fried shallots and coriander. We dug in and low behold, generous chunks of roasted pork were unveiled.

I can’t believe no one has ever thought to come up with this sooner. What a treat! The flavours of the biryani and the roasted pork with cracklings are superb. The rice was beautifully fluffy, aromatic and well flavoured with spices. The roasted pork was tender and tasty too. The combination of both was lethally yummy. As I look around, every table had at least an order of this dish. Damn shiok!

Although the Siew Yoke Biryani hog the limelight, the hogging didn’t stop there. Butter Pork (RM28), a piggy take on the much beloved butter chicken was sublime. His other restaurant already perfected the butter chicken and now it’s made with tenderloin pork fillet. Thick, lusciously rich and creamy with a nice tang of tomato flavours, the Butter Pork goes so well with rice or bread.

There’s also a porky rendition of another classic in Pork 65 Masala (RM28). Bold spice flavours with punchy heat from tenderloin pieces of pork are guaranteed to go well with rice or bread for that matter. The tiny mustard seeds added touches of popping flavours and texture to the dish.

After all that meat, we consoled our health conscience with an order of Eggplant Masala (RM17). Eggplant cooked till soft and creamy with lots of aromatics and spices, the dish was a big hit on the table.

Then, there’s also Tadka Dal (RM17), a must-order when dining on the cuisine. The version here is damn delicious. Thick, creamy, nutty and well infused with spices, dried chilies and fresh herbs, I kept piling this on my rice.

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, Herukh presented his pride and joy, the Bacon Cheese Naan (RM15). Bacon chips sautéed with garlic and butter, then folded into his naan with cheese and baked in tandoor oven, smelled heavenly. Definitely decadent than the usual naan. This one is a testament that bacon makes everything taste better…

We enjoyed how Meat the Porkers aim to please us swine fans. It took a huge gamble and has gone where no man has been and the gamble certainly paid off. Meat the Porkers may be the first porky Indian restaurant to hit our shores but I am sure it won’t be for long before many will follow pursuit. Herukh plans to introduce other new dishes every 6 months so expect more porky delights like Pork Rib Biryani to come. When food is this good and made even better with swine, Meat the Porkers is a must-visit!!

Okonomi @ Solaris Dutamas

Sushi As You Like It

Okomoni – translate to ‘as you like it’ already had my attention the moment it opened in Solaris Dutamas. In fact, I have visited this place a few times prior to this visit with my family. The concept is fun as one can DIY their own sushi roll.

Together with Choi Yen and her family as well as mine, we paid a visit one weekend for a treat of sushi and other Japanese dishes since both our children enjoy Japanese food very much. Apparently there are new dishes at Okonomi and we can’t wait to try them.

The restaurant is nicely designed and has an open kitchen concept that allows diners to catch some sushi making action while dining. Section into two, the dining area is also parallel to the open kitchen. We like the modern contemporary interior design with the curvy ceiling panels and lighting that gives the restaurant a hip and cool vibe. Neutral colors let diners enjoy their meal at ease and in comfort. There is also an open dining space at the back of the restaurant for more privacy dining or functions.

The menu is decent with plenty of house signature sushi rolls taking top spots, followed by other classic Japanese dishes. There is also another menu where one can design your own sushi roll as you like it!

Drinks came first as usual. I had the & Matcha Shiratama Float (RM16.90) while Choi Yen had the Matcha Azuki Shiratama Latte (RM16.90). Our beverages are so refreshingly good with an intense matcha note. I was particularly fond of mine which had a scoop of green tea ice cream and balls of chewy Shiratama.

Our family had their fruit smooties of Strawberry, Mango & Avocado (RM12.90). Tall glasses of cream and fruity smoothies that makes a lovely beverage for the hot sunny day.

Spicy Prawn Burger (RM18.90) is the first dish on the list and also a new one on the menu. A pretty ensemble of chunks of poached prawns with crabstick, avocado, lettuce, onion, spicy creamy sauce sandwiched with sushi rice patties and crowned with spring onions and generous fish roes. Not a burger that one can lift to bite, we certainly didn’t mind as it was such a tasty combination with a good kick of heat.

There are two new sushi rolls on the menu now and the first one is a kickass Sweet and Spicy Prawn Roll (RM25.90). One bite of this and the heat explodes like fireworks in your mouth. I absolutely love this roll. The roll has a filling of boiled chopped egg, radish and lettuce. It is then wrapped with rice and draped with prawns before being smothered in a creamy spicy sauce with a sprinkling of finely chopped bird eye chili. So shiok!

Slammin’ Salmon (RM19.90) is the next new sushi roll and bound to be another crowd favorite. Salmon, Tamago, cucumber, melted cheese and spring onion sums up the roll. The combination is delicious, especially with the creamy melted cheese that paired so well with salmon and egg. I would definitely order this again.

We couldn’t resist ordering their popular house roll of Seafood Supreme (RM32.90). The uramaki roll (inside out roll) has crispy soft shell crab, Hokkaido crab meat, salmon, cucumber, cereal and yukke sauce. Indeed it is just as yummy as I have remembered it. The sticky sweet soy sauce really brought everything together so well and the crushed cereal added a nice crispy texture.

Now of course we also had a DIY roll of our own concoction. It’s quite easy as one has several sections of choices to choose from a list. The DIY roll comes in a choice of two sizes with regular (6 pieces – RM15.90) or large (8 pieces – RM18.90). Regular roll comes with 3 standard ingredients, 1 sauce & 1 topping while Large roll comes with 4 standard ingredients, 1 sauce & 1 topping. For premium selection ingredient as well as other additional topping or sauces, there are additional charges.

First, we decided to go healthy and had brown sushi rice, followed by a choice of uramaki roll preference and then we opted for a soy wrap instead of seaweed. We went with regular roll but opted for premium selection upgrade of Smoked Duck. Then we chose mango and avocado with a spicy mentai mayo sauce and topped it with crunchy tempura flakes. Our DIY roll was priced at RM20.90 with the premium selection upgrade. Yummy and satisfying to the very last piece…

We also had other dishes and Tempura Squid (RM18.90) turned out decent. The light and crispy rings of squid are nice and tender with the classic tempura sauce.

The Teriyaki Chicken (RM15.90) had all the passing marks of a solid dish. Light crispy skin on the chicken and the meat was tender and juicy. The smoky and sweet teriyaki sauce has the right balance of flavors and certainly made the dish very enjoyable.

Another new dish on the menu is the Chicken Karaage Waffle (RM18.90). This was decent but nothing that stands out much to me in terms of flavors. There is also nothing to fault has it had a nice crisp waffle, yummy crispy chicken karaage and the cream sauce was ok. Maybe because the other dishes all stood out in solid flavors so this one was less outstanding than the rest. Still a good dish if you love waffles and fried chicken.

Our kids had the Chicken Gratin Pasta (RM21.90), which was very tasty and creamy. The pasta had sufficient dose of flavorful cream sauce with chicken and mushrooms. It was also cooked to al dente and the dish was much enjoyed by Choi Yen’s daughter.

My sonny boy opted for his all-time-favorite Katsu Curry Chicken (RM21.90) the moment he saw this on the menu. How good was it? So delicious that he managed to polished it all off on his own. I did taste a bit of the curry and found it pleasing and comforting with a nice mild spice note and not overly creamy or spicy.

Lunch ended with a new dessert, a molten one of Matcha and Chocolate Lava Cake (RM21.90). A great pairing of chocolate and matcha, the lava cake was a hit at our table. Truly molten with a soft layer of cake, the flavors were spot and definitely a must for chocolate lovers. We love the dark rich taste of oozing chocolate with the intense green tea as well as the icy chocolate ice cream and chocolate sauce. Can’t get any more chocolate than this…

One thing Okonomi does well is consistency. Like I said, I have dined there before and their food has always been good in terms of consistency in flavors and presentation. A fun and relaxing place for good sushi rolls and some modern Japanese dishes…
