Kids Showcase Talent in Leggo’s Junior Chef Challenge at Young Chef Academy

It’s Amazing What Kids Can Whipped Up If You Let Them Get Creative!

‘If you give a man a fish you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish you feed him for a lifetime’ quoted by Lao Tzu.

A brilliant saying that fits the bill where we should teach our young ones and trust them to do what some of us do each day!

Leggo’s, the number one brand for authentic pasta sauces in Australia under the mother company Simplot, organized a fun-packed cooking competition called “Leggo’s Junior Chef Challenge” for kids aged ten to fifteen today. Themed “Pasta Bake,” the young participants whipped up scrumptious dishes using only Leggo’s range of pasta bake sauces namely Ricotta & Spinach and Creamy Tomato & Mozzarella at Young Chefs® Academy (YCA) at Desa Sri Hartamas.

The cooking competition lasted for 1 hour 30 minutes consisting of sixteen talented kids from YCA as well as several enrolments from the children of the members of the media. There were two participants stationed at each cooking station. Possessing the skills just like their adult counterparts, one of them was seen preparing the ingredients whereas the other was in charge of cooking.

Before the competition started, Saw Kok Kheng, Commercial Marketing Assistant Manager of Simplot Southeast Asia and also one of the judges said, “Loaded with fresh tomatoes, premium cheese with no artificial preservatives, no artificial colours and artificial flavours, Leggo’s pasta sauces contain only the most authentic and exquisite ingredients.” He added, “The main reason why we organized this competition is to bring out the talent from these young participants and also to allow them to experience something new with our Leggo’s Pasta Bake sauces.”

One for the camera before the cooking competition starts!

It was certainly fun to watch the kids cook and the skills they honed in the kitchen were really impressive, especially since some of them were so young! As they literally cut, chop, mix, knead, fry, boil and cook up a storm, the place was filled with delicious aroma livening up the room. After some chats with them, it seemed that they have been planning for a while for the competition with much discussion, testing and research for this day. Check out their creations!

There is just no limit to one can do with a bottle of Leggo’s sauce!

The outcome was certainly a delight to watch as there were many interesting dishes presented on the judging table. The panel of judges – Chef Sarah (also known as Chef RaRa) from YCA, Saw Kok Kheng from Simplot and Sidney Kan, the President of Culinary Association Malaysia evaluated each and every of dish based on five criterias – Taste, Cleanliness, Teamwork, Presentation and Creativity. The guests and members of the media also contributed 20% to the final score through their votes.

After tasting and scoring was completed, the judges announced the winners. According to the judges, it was no easy feat as most of the dishes were  executed beautifully.

Robin Chan and Sean Ng from Team 1 was second runner-up with their dish of Spanish Rice with Seafood. The team bagged RM300 cash prize and as well as hamper products worth RM100.

The first runner-up, Sathyashini Suresh and Adam Mohamad Helmy from Team 3, received RM500 cash prize and RM200 worth of hamper products with their dish of Arancini di Riso.

Grinning from eye to eye, Avinash Austin and Chow Qin Rhu from the winning team said, “We are so happy to win this! We have been practicing for more than a week and are extremely elated to be announced as the winners!”  Both Avinash and Qin Rhu’s winning dish of Mini Pizza Pockets took home cash prize of RM1,000 and also RM300 worth of hamper comprising Leggo’s products and culinary sets.

Other participants did not go home empty-handed after all the hard work as they were also given Leggo’s products worth RM120.

Brian Chen, Managing Partner of YCA said, “We are very happy to be collaborating with Leggo’s to come up with such an interesting competition for the kids. It has been a joyful process to teach and practice with them prior to this competition so that they can further hone their cooking skills.”

Serena Brasserie, Intercontinental Kuala Lumpur: A Splendid Mexican Affair!

My Deliciosa Mexican Night!

In sequel to my sneak preview of the Mexican fare specially brought in by Intercontinental Kuala Lumpur in collaboration with KLM and the Embassy of Mexico in Malaysia, the event was official kicked off recently starting from April 1 to 15.

If you‘re a Mexican fanatic, do make sure to head there and check out what Chefs Salvador Vasquez and Tania Gonzalez has under their repertoire. Much of the ingredients have been sourced from Mexico to ensure authentic flavors and textures. The Mexican cuisine is as bold in flavors as its kaleidoscope of colors. Our feast as a sight from the moment we step into Serena Brasserie at Intercontinental Kuala Lumpur that evening!

Greeting us were wait staff dressed in traditional Mexican costumes, its sombrero to serape to gorgeous embroidered white dress was certainly a rainbow of happiness!

When one is in Mexico (well, we can pretend, right?), one do need their infamous Sangrias to kick off the party! The wine punch is lightly flavored with cubes of fruits and one is never enough. Else quench your thirst with another popular must-have, a refreshing Margarita is always much welcome in my books!!

The buffet counters are loaded heavily with a nice assortment of its usual cold seafood, some Japanese sushi fare, pasta counters and some local delights among its list of Mexican dishes. With basic staples listed as corn, beans, chilies and cactus, Mexican cuisine is highly tied to its geographical location. As these locations are suitable for such produce, it is only fair that Mexican got creative with the produce and turns them into signature dishes.

Hitting the salad bar, I was pleasantly pleased with the assortment of salads with Scallops with Serrano Peppers and Cilantro, Cactus Salad, Zucchini & Beans Salad with Cilantro and Potato with Fried Chili from the Tree. Flavors are a myriad of sour, sweet and spicy with each one showcasing their own unique notes. Let’s not forget that Mexican cuisine is infamous for dips and chips! Holding their own little corner is Guacamole with golden crispy Tortilla Chips.

Hot warmers held trays of robust dishes like Grilled Flank Steak, Chicken in Poblano Chocolate Chili Ancho Sauce (Mole), Fish Veracruz, Barbequed Lamb in Hildalgo Style, Shrimps in Passila Guava Sauce, Mexican Rice and more. My favorites were the chicken in mole sauce with its complex and rich flavors with hints of chocolate and grilled lamb that was just tender and juicy. The dishes are just perfect with light Mexican rice or fresh warm tortillas.

Chilies are almost a national treasure in Mexico! Thousands of chilies are grown and used in many Mexican dishes. Truth be told, many of the chilies are not readily available here in Malaysia. A quick discussion with the chefs and the kitchen team, special chilies like Poblano, Passila, Ancho, Habenero, Chipolte, Guajillo and more were sourced and imported specially for this promotion. Another fruit not common here is tomatillo, resembling a green tomato but its flavors are mild and sweet, is also brought in for some dishes. I spied a few bowls of salsa sauces and some sautéed chilies and onions on the side that night for extra kicks and boy, these were just heavenly on the spicy sense!

Quesadillas are toasted tortilla filled with various fillings and we savored Quesadillas y Tortilla Caliente with much happiness. Filling changes daily and every quesadilla is freshly prepared on request. I adored the spicy Mexican Beef but admitted that the unique Huitlacoche (corn fungus) takes a fairly strange flavor note. It’s not overpowering but it does have a lightly moldly note similar to our local Tempe I would say. It certainly warrants a try since it’s really rare to see this here!

Mini Mexican Tortas with shredded beef and potato provide little bites of sensation to those who simply must have their burger.

Mexican cuisine also has their fair share of sweets! Ranging from candies to fried fritters, cakes and caramels, sitting on the high court is Churros! Long strips of crisp fried fritters with soft centers, rolled with flavored sugar and mostly commonly dipped in chocolate, we certainly pay tribute to these addictive Churros. Another heavenly dessert I discovered were Berlinesa, little balls of doughnut like filled with custard and coated in sugar was an addiction I happily indulged in. Make sure to try these as I got some of them piping hot and it was just heavenly on my taste bud.

Luscious creamy Crème Caramel, Corn Tart, Sweet Potato Tart, Mexican cookies and candies were also present among other local desserts, ice creams, fruits and chocolate fountain!

During the dinner, Chef Salvador gave us a cooking demo on making their national favorite Cactus Salad. The chef was truly jolly and humble, making the night a lovely unforgettable merriment. If you need the recipe, drop me an email!

Intercontinental Kuala Lumpur: An Introduction to a Mexican Fiesta!

Catch a Taste of Mexico here in Kuala Lumpur!

It’s a country as old as time. Rich with history and diversity, Mexico is one country that is no like any other. Everything about the Aztec civilization is truly an eye opener, from its cultural heritage to its people, food and nature, that never cease to amaze.  The country has 9 cities and 7 destinations listed as World Heritage sites by Unesco, including its Mexican gastronomy in the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

A recent invite to an introduction to Mexican gastronomy by Intercontinental Kuala Lumpur in collaboration with the Embassy of Mexico in Malaysia was an evening of historical information and a taste of its cuisine. Mexico has long been recognized for its natural beauty and traditions that reflect centuries of history and cultural legacy. To be able to get to know the colorful country is definitely an honor!

The evening took off with a presentation of Mexico by Madam Lourdes Sosa Marquez, Deputy Head of the Embassy of Mexico in Malaysia. After a short video of Mexico’s opulent history and culture, Madam Lourdes emphasized further on how traditional Mexican cuisine is a comprehensive cultural model of farming, ritual practices, age-old skills, culinary techniques and customs. More information about Mexico is available at http://www.visitmexico.com/en/

Next up, a cooking demonstration by the pretty Paula Estefania Gallegos Galeana had us all learning how to make a Mexican staple of fresh tortilla, the perfect Quesadilla and fresh tomato salsa.

Tortilla, a national staple of Mexico, is consumed almost in every Mexican meal. Equivalent to our rice here, tortilla is a thin flatbread made from finely ground wheat flour or corn flour. Tortilla is very versatile and is used in many ways to accompany dishes from salad, soup to mains and even desserts! Here, Paula even brings her tortilla press to complete demo.  Once the tortilla is ready, she fills the tortilla with an assorted array of fillings from cheese to mushrooms and meat before toasting on a hot griddle to make Quesadillas. Savor these tasty snacks with fresh homemade tomato salsa.

The evening ended with a taste of the delicious guacamole, salsas, quesadillas, margaritas and Mexican Chili Iced Teas!

In honor of Mexican cuisine, Intercontinental Kuala Lumpur is proud to bring Mexico’s world famous traditional cuisine together with two extraordinary Mexican chefs, Chef Tania Gonzalez and Chef Salvador Vasquez, specially flown in by KLM from Presidente Intercontinental Mexico for the Mexican Fiesta.

Savor authentic Mexican fare with a long list of national favorites such as Ensalada de NOpales, Guacamole con Totopos, Salpicon de res a La Mexicana, Albondigas con salsa de Tomate, Camarones al Pasilla y Guayaba, Barbacoa de Cordero de Hildalgo, Quesadilllas y Tortillas Calientes, Churros, Arroz con Leche and more this month from April 1 to 15 at Serena Brasserie. It’s a Fiesta you don’t want to miss!
