Mid-Autumn Bliss Menu @ Elegant Inn Hong Kong Cuisine

Celebrate Mid-Autumn Festive with Poon Choy & Mooncakes

As we gear up for the coming Mid-Autumn festive month, it is the perfect time to usher in the festive mood with what Malaysians do best… gather to enjoy great food and good company with family, friends and business colleagues.

Elegant Inn Hong Kong Cuisine, anointed as One of Asia’s Finest Restaurant by Miele Guide, has been serving over a decade of fine Cantonese cuisine as well as Hong Kong-inspired dishes to gourmands. It’s solid reputation for serving the finest cuisine with quality ingredients has garnered a loyal foodie cult of the elite in the city.

Although its my first time stepping into Elegant Inn, I have long heard of its acclaimed reputation through the industry’s grapevine. What started as a 6-table restaurant in Taman Connaught, Cheras before moving to Menara Hap Seng 11 years ago has truly paid off as gourmands can now enjoy the restaurant’s signature dishes in the bustling city of Kuala Lumpur.

Elegant Inn boasts of the city’s glitzy view of skyscrapers of our nation’s prides with Twin Tower and KL Tower at sight. The restaurant is housed on level 2 and often gets missed by many city dwellers. However, true blue epicurean knows to hunt down the restaurant for a taste of its fine cuisine.

CNY 2016 at Imperial Garden Restaurant by Tai Thong Group

Indulge in Chinese New Year Specialties at Tai Thong Restaurants

This New Year of the Fire Monkey brings fourth more indulgence and this time, it’s at Imperial Garden Restaurant under the Tai Thong Group. Presenting a feast fit for many, Tai Thong Group Executive Chef Lee Wee Hong and Dim Sum Chef Loo Kok Seng has gone all out again in creativity this festive season. Diners can expect nothing short but classic CNY feast with modern twists in honoring the New Year.

The Chinese New Year media preview was held at Imperial Garden Restaurant in Petaling Jaya. Joined by the God of Prosperity and the honorable presence of the Monkey King, it was quite the presentation in food as well as the ambiance. The Tai Thong Group never fails to go all out in serving delicious food set in a beautiful ambiance.

We tossed into prosperity with this year’s delectable yee sang created in honors of the Monkey King. The Golden Fortune Yee Sang with Fruits & Nuts (RM68.80++ - half portion | RM108.80++ - full portion).

Using peaches, the yee sang also had quite a list of fresh fruits and lots of various nuts, dried fruits and sesame seeds. We loved the vibrant flavours of juiciness and various textures in this yee sang. Full of natural sweet and tangy juices, the yee sang had a healthy note as well as making it easy to enjoy with its fresh and light sensation.

Besides the yee sang, there are also two more Tai Thong creations of Fortune Yee Sang (RM68.80++ - half portion | RM108.80++ - full portion) and Double Happiness Yee Sang (RM88.80++ - half portion | RM128.80++ - full portion). The Fortune Yee Sang showcase Salmon and Snow Pear while the Double Happiness Yee Sang features Japanese Fish Roe and Prawn.

The next highlight of the festive season calls for the famous Poon Choy. It’s perfect for a group of diners sitting down to enjoy layers of seafood or meat all beautifully cooked and served in one huge pot, symbolizing unity together in harmony.

Tai Thong offers three versions of Poon Choy this year. Featuring something a little different, feast on the Fortune Seafood Treasure Pot (RM298.80++ for 5 pax | RM498.80++ for 10 pax), a medley of King Solomon’s sea treasures of whole Jade Perch, Tiger Prawns, Cheese Baked Mussels, Stuffed Crabstick with Fish Paste, Stuffed Squid with Chicken and lots of other vegetables. The Poon Choi ingredients are all married together in a beautiful rich sauce filled with lots of seafood essence.

Two other Poon Choy available at all their Tai Thong restaurants as well are Golden Treasure Poon Choy (RM298.80++ for 5 pax |RM498.80++ for 10 pax) and Prosperity Treasure Poon Choy (RM298.80++ for 5 pax | RM498.80++ for 10 pax). All Poon Choy Treasure Pots are filled with lots of delicious and lavish ingredients for a year of abundance!

*Reservation for Poon Choy Treasure Pots are required 2 days in advance for dine-in or take away.

There are more festive dishes available in their various CNY festive set menus. One of them is a gorgeous soup of Double-boiled Dried Premium Seafood Soup served in Coconut (RM48.80++). It was a unanimous vote at our table that evening that this soup was absolutely delicious.

Served in coconut, the broth was redolent of coconut aroma and flavour. Naturally sweet and savory with lots of dried seafood essence. The broth alone had everyone enjoying this in silence as it was just so flavourful and warming. There are also chunks of abalone, dried scallop, fish maw, village chicken, crab stick, bamboo pith, mushroom and red dates in the soup. The soup is available a la carte or in CNY Set Menu D.

Another classic must-have during CNY is waxed meat with rice. Tai Thong presents their Claypot Rice with Chinese Waxed Meat and Edamame, available in CNY Set Menu C. Highly prized waxed duck, liver sausage and Chinese sausage are steam-baked in claypot with rice, allowing its luscious oils to infuse the rice as it cooks. Edamame beans and special sauce is added to finish the dish. Enjoy the lightly fluffy aromatic rice with delightful flavours of soy sauce and sublime oils from the waxed meat.

The prettiest Nian Gao dish I have seen so far over the years, Dim Sum Chef Loo has created a Chilled “Nian Gao” with Osmanthus & Sakura (RM11.80++ / 6pcs). It’s truly unique in flavour and texture. One cannot help but be impressed with these pretty jewels of lightly chewy sweet Nian Gao set in QQ osmanthus jelly with a pretty edible sakura flower. While some may think this is odd combo, rest assured, the flavours and textures goes really well together.

Besides CNY set menus and CNY special a la carte dishes, Tai Thong also has a Prosperous Dim Sum menu in store for the festive occasion!

Steamed Triple Delight with Oyster Sauce (RM9.80++), a trio of yummy seafood dumpling crowned with festive ingredients of Fatt Choy, Hoe See and Mushrooms that signify prosperity in the Chinese community.

Steamed Fatt Choy Dumpling with Prawns (RM8.80++), crystal skin dumplings encasing plump and bouncy prawns with Fatt Choy proved to be a winner in every delectable sense.

Baked Dried Oyster Tart (RM8.80++) had everyone raving about how superb these golden short crumb pastry tart that is filled with moreish dried oysters filling. Superb dim sum and simply a Must-Order!!

Steamed Bamboo Rice with Chinese Waxed Meat (RM10.80++) are individual servings of sticky savory and sweet glutinous rice with waxed meat steamed in bamboo. Love the addition of pine nuts in this classic treat…

The Prosperous Dim Sum is available from 1 February to 29 February 2016.

Xin Cuisine, Concorde Hotel Kuala Lumpur: Prosperity and Abundance Blooms at Xin!

More Chinese New Year Menus!

A first visit for me, I was immediately drawn to its grandeur upon the entrance of Xin Cuisine, Concorde Hotel Kuala Lumpur. All decked out in auspicious gold, cream and dark wood, one just cannot help but stood at awed in the grandness of the restaurant coupled with two huge pillars coiled with gold dragons! Red lanterns crown the center to provide shots of brightness to the whole ambience.

The evening kicked off with its gorgeous gold and red table setting playing host to the auspicious Yee Sang. Xin Cuisine, a 360 seating capacity, serves nouvelle Cantonese cuisine and Hong Kong dim sums. It also boasts a noodle bar serving various noodle and rice dishes to please even the discerning taste buds.

This festive CNY season, Xin Cuisine New Year offerings arrive in abundance with a sumptuous variety of traditional and new Yee Sangs, Prosperity menus, Waxed Meats, Nian Gao and dim sums. We were treated to a little bit of everything that evening with the gracious presence of the Concorde Hotel Kuala Lumpur team.

Prosperity Mini Octopus Yee Sang with Traditional Condiments

The customary dish shone brightly with chewy baby octopus, jelly fish and the usual condiments with the addition of seaweed crackers. The seaweed crackers added a unique oceanic flavor to the yee sang. The yee sang hit a moreish and sour note here and plus points goes to the no oil concept and lots of crushed peanuts and sesame seeds for aroma. Lo Hei! Lo Hei!

Oyster Wrapped with Fish Maw

Little bouncy bundles of fish maw wrapped with seafood paste and oyster summed up the dim sum. I love it for its texture, flavor and delicate touch. It has a natural sweetness of the sea with the dried seafood and the seafood paste. I would certainly love to enjoy a few of these succulent bundles!

Prosperity Egg

Ok, no alien life-form detected here. Instead one gets a resplendent quail egg beneath the thin pastry skin together with prawns and other sea treasures. I doubt anyone would not like quail egg as the richly flavored egg seemed to win the hearts of many most of the time with its presence. Nestled beneath is lightly sautéed spinach for some green touch.

Sea Cucumber with Abalone Roll

My favorite dim sum of the lot, its slight chewy texture of the abalone with bits of sea cucumber and bouncy filling take the cake in flavors. Doused with aromatic brown gravy, I just love the taste that filled my senses with pleasure. Simply a must-have!

Special Dim Sum

Deemed Salted Egg Puff by staff, this Woo Kok look-a-like exemplifies the textures of powdery yam filled with a tasty savory filling. Its light crisp fluffy texture seemed to please many that night. A light hint of salted egg yolk makes the dim sum a creamy dreamy one!

Steamed Sea Garoupa with Soya Sauce

Bold and red, the sea garoupa truly illustrated the auspicious ‘Nian Nian You Yue’ beautifully. Going traditional, the fish was sweet, flaky and very delicate with the soft notes of soy sauce. In a way, I am very glad for this classic to savor the full beauty of the sweet garoupa.

Stuffed Oyster with Fatt Choy & Seasonal Vegetables

I knew I was going to enjoy this dish when I saw it. Fish paste with black Fatt Choy is neatly molded with oyster to circle a medley of broccoli and layered bean curd. Each bite is filled with deep rich notes of the oyster while the fish paste is delectably moreish. The sauce is very light in sweet and savory notes.

Wok Fried Rice with Two Varieties of Chinese Sausage & Corn Kernel

Another traditional favorite, the fluffy fried rice was filled with lots of wok heat and aromatic waxed sausages. Boldly using two types of Chinese sausage and Wine sausage, the combination worked its magic into our taste bud heavenly. Unduly sweet, the flavors pumped up the fried rice with bits of sweet corn kernel gorgeously. There is a reason why this traditional dish is a favorite!

Chinese New Year Sweets

Desserts were superlative in creativity! Not one but three unique twist on the traditional Nian Gao has put the dish to be one of the most creative inspired Nian Gao this season. Showcasing Sweet Potato Nian Gao with Macadamia Nuts, Pineapple Paste & Almond Nian Gao and Durian Paste Nian Gao, I can smell this dessert a mile away because of the king of fruit, durian.

Though it was pure agony for me to face my nemesis, the durian, I braved the smell and tasted the other two. I loved both Sweet Potato Nian Gao with Macadamia Nuts and Pineapple Paste & Almond Nian Gao equally. Sweet potato was creamy and sweet with a soft and nutty texture while the pineapple paste seemed to work deliciously with the Nian Gao and crushed almond bits. I only managed to take in the raved reviews from others for the durian one as they said the real McCoy was distinctively present in the durian Nian Gao.

Chilled Seaweed Jelly with Osmanthus & Wolfberry

I have always only had it in chilled jelly square but the version here has managed to outdo the classic version. Soft wobbly almost liquidly jelly is tainted with the familiar hint of light bitter edges of the osmanthus flowers and sweet niblets of wolfberries. The dessert evoked cooling sensation to the tongue while soothing our senses after that glorious meal.

Chef Wong Pak Seng, Chef Ng Meng Loong and the new kid on the block, Chef Lok Meng Pak present an irresistible authentic CNY menu appropriate to usher the arrival of New Year of the Water Snake.

I love how the CNY sweets make their presence here that night! From Almond Biscuits to an assorted array of CNY tidbits, we munched on them in glee…

Pin Xiang Restaurant, Aman Suria: Let’s Rock in the New Year with Poon Choi!

It’s Time to Indulge in Prosperity Treasure Pot!

Ok... I guess there is no rule to say that one must only savor the auspicious Poon Choi during Chinese New Year although the festive seasons are definitely a good excuse to indulge in one! Pin Xiang Restaurant is proud to present their version of the prosperity treasure pot filled with abundance of sea and land treasures right now at the restaurant.

Back for more goodies, we gathered for the preview of the lavish offerings of this traditional CNY heritage at Pin Xiang. Savoring Poon Choi is almost like opening up a present at Christmas with layers of goodies unveiled at each level of the pot. The top portion is usually the most lavish and expensive items while the next layer is usually filled with braised ingredients. The braised dishes tend to also stay warm longer so as one slowly savors the various ingredients till the latter.

Heading straight to the pot, Pin Xiang spared no expense but charge all the way in luxury! Offering three choices, two non-vegetarians and one vegetarian, the meaty version also comes in two sizes. As everything is prepared fresh, one needs to pre-order the Poon Choi at least two days in advance. The Poon Choi is available dine-in or take away. The take away Treasure pot uses a quality stainless steel pot for reheating purposes. Booking and Delivery period starts from 01/11/2012 to 24/02/2013.

Healthy Vegetarian Treasure Pot (18 ingredients)

Ingredients: Taiwan Premium Vegetarian Sea Cucumber, “AA” Mushrooms, Hericium, Taiwan Vegetarian Water Prawn, Abalone Mushroom, Golden Vegetarian Duck, Vegetarian Roast Pork, Vegetarian Chicken, Straw Mushrooms, Premium Mushrooms, Premium Bailing Mushrooms, Vegetarian Fish, Golden Pillow, Vegetable Brittle Intestine, Dried Beancurd Skin, Sea Moss, Broccoli

Medium (6-8 persons) RM168++

Featured on our table was the large version of Prosperity Abalone Treasure Pot filled with the goodies! Nestled on top are the opulence sea treasures while the next layers features the layers of duck and chicken while the bottom later has a glorious whole pork knuckle, soft gelatinous fish maw, wobbly pig’s tendons, and other ingredients. My favorites have to be the abalones, dried scallops, golden pearl balls and the spicy sweet sea prawns.

First Class Charcoal Roasted Chicken

Besides the treasure pots, we also savored some signatures and classics. First up was a Pin Xiang signature of First Class Charcoal Roasted Chicken (RM30/RM60). Using corn fed chickens, the chook is leaner for a healthier touch. Marinated in herbs and spices, the chook is slowly roasted over hot coals to produce its signature crispy lacquered skin and tender moist meat. It has a great smoky aroma and tinged with salty flavors with hints of spice notes. Compliments to the chef for serving this with sweet lychees to balance up the savory flavors of the chook!

Stir Fried Spinach and Stir Fried Choy Sum with Bittergourd

After the ecstasy of meat & seafood, we consoled ourselves with some greens. Simple Stir Fried Spinach and Stir Fried Choy Sum with Bittergourd (RM12/RM20) was very much a welcome treat. While the first is decent, the second is my favorite. Sounds a bit weird but the combination of crunchy pickled Choy Sum with tender crisp bittergourd really works. A little salty and a little bitter, both flavors slowly works their addictive way into my taste.

Braised Crab Beehoon

Sshh… this is not in the menu! Chef concocted the Braised Crab Beehoon upon someone’s request and it’s now a favorite among us. Fresh sweet crab flavors are rooted deeply in the soft rice noodles making slurping a requirement for full effect of flavors. Hints of ginger and scallions added more oomph to the dish. Prices depend on market price for crabs. Ask for this from the wait staff if it tickles your fancy!

Do remember to book two days in advance for the Treasure Pots and call for more details. T&C applies.
