Garrett Popcorn Mid-Autumn Festive Gift Set

Celebrate Mid-Autumn with Jade Rabbit Tins encased in Garrett Popcorn Mid-Autumn Gift Set!

The Mid-Autumn festive season is near and we’re all looking forward to celebrating with family and friends. Step away from the typical traditions, I plan to share this Mid-Autumn season with loved ones by gifting them Garrett Popcorn’s exclusive Mid-Autumn Gift Set!

Garrett Popcorn, our all-time-favorite from Chicago, USA, is offering the return of the fan favorite Matcha CaramelCrisp together with their signature Chicago Mix encased in two beautiful blue ‘Jade Rabbit Tins’, set in Garrett’s signature blue 2016 limited edition gift box.

Back due to popular demand after its launch in March, the Matcha CaramelCrisp is made using harada matcha sourced from one of the finest area for tea in Japan – Shizuoko prefecture. Luscious, intense matcha flavors with just the right bittersweet note, coupled with crunchy caramel popcorn is great for this festive Mid-Autumn season. Let’s not forget the all-time-favorite sweet CaramelCrisp and salty CheeseCorn mix of the delectable Chicago Mix, my favorite of course, that is the perfect snack for anytime of the day. Serve them with tea this season to join in the festive cheer…

I simply adore the Jade Rabbit Tins! The whimsical motifs of bunnies on fluffy clouds set against a backdrop of the golden full moon, definitely evokes the famous scenery of Chinese fable of Chang Er, the mythical moon maiden and her rabbit companion. The embossed motif, beautifully reminiscing the season’s mooncakes on the gold tin lids added much elegance to the tins as well.

The tins are definitely a keeper as the size is great for jewelry and keepsakes once the popcorn is finished. Even the box warrants a keepsake with its gorgeous blue and gold on the outside and its sweet rose red on the inside.

This Mid-Autumn season, celebrate the new spirit of giving through Garrett Popcorn Mid-Autumn Gift Set. Whether you are sharing the delectable flavors of Matcha CaramelCrisp and Chicago Mix as a complement to the traditional gifting of mooncakes or simply gift it on its own, the gift set is a great merriment of a new year of Mid-Autumn and many more festive season to come.

The limited edition Mid-Autumn Gift Set and Matcha CaramelCrisp will be available at all Garrett Popcorn Shops from August 19 to September 30, 2016 while stocks last. Priced at RM54 per gift box, there are only 300 gift sets in Malaysia this festive season. Recipe: LINGHAM’s Chili Cucur Udang

With the festive Raya holiday coming right up, I decided to make a scrumptious snack that is loved by many Malaysians. Our melting pot of culture allows us to grow up with a plethora of choices in food. I grew up waiting for my neighborhood’s pasar malam to come once a week so I can go and buy the array of street food at the pasar malam.

It was such a treat because I can never wait to taste all the various flavours of the assorted Malay, Chinese and Indian stalls selling their specialties. One particular stall that I will surely visit is this makcik selling freshly fried and piping hot cucur udang and cucur jagung. There is something deliciously satisfying of strolling along the pasar malam and digging into a bag of small balls of cucur, usually made with vegetables and prawns. Though the cucur is always already good on its own, there is this must-have side of sweet chili sauce that makes the cucur even more enticing.

Then years goes on and when I learn to cook, my sister’s made from Indonesia shared her recipe of Indonesia Bakwan with me. Similar to our local cucur, the bakwan is also vegetable or prawn fritters. To join the bandwagon of the coming Raya holidays, here’s my recipe of Cucur Udang made with extra loves from LINGHAM’s Chili Sauce range.

I used the LINGHAM’s Sriracha Sauce to add extra kicks to my cucur udang and it turned out to be a bomb of flavours. The pungent and spicy Sriracha sauce worked wonders on the flavour profile and is very versatile to be added into a lot of dishes easily. The recipe is simple as it just needs prep work in advance, mix all together and then fried when ready to serve.

Finally once fried, serve the cucur udang with your choices of any of LINGHAM’s Chili Sauce. I chose the LINGHAM’s Thai Chili Sauce because it reminded me of my yesteryears favorite cucur udang served with a sweet chili sauce.

Happy Cooking and Selamat Raya Adilfitri in advance to Every One celebrating!

LINGHAM’s Chili Cucur Udang

Ingredients
200gm        Small/Medium sized Prawns (shelled)
100gm        Cabbage (shredded finely)
150gm        Corn (frozen or fresh)
30gm          Kuchai or Chives (chopped)
Half             Carrot (shredded finely)
Half             Onion (minced)
2                 Red Chili (deseeded and chopped)
2 cloves       Garlic (pounded into paste)
150gm         Flour
50gm           Rice Flour
1 tbsp          Baking Powder
1tsp             Chicken Powder
1tbsp           LINGHAM’s Sriracha Chili Sauce
1                 Egg
2/3 cup        Water
                   Salt and Pepper to season
                   Cooking Oil for deep frying
LINGHAM’s Thai Chili Sauce to serve
                   Cucumbers and Fried Tempe (optional)

Method
Prepare all the ingredients as stated in the Ingredient list.
In a big bowl, mix together garlic paste flour, rice flour, baking powder, chicken powder, LINGHAM’s Sriracha Chili Sauce, egg, water, salt and pepper to season till smooth.
Do not over work the mix but just enough to bine everything together.
Add in cabbage, corn, chives, carrot, onion, red chili and prawns.
Mix again gently till combined.
Heat up oil in a deep pan till hot and then lower the temperature to medium.
Drop in spoonfuls of the batter one at a time into the oil to deep fry on medium low heat till cooked and golden brown.
Drain on paper towel and serve hot with LINGHAM’s Thai Chili Sauce with cucumbers and fried tempe.
Makes about 28 to 30 pieces of Cucur Udang

Extra Notes and Tips
  • Omit the prawns and chicken powder to make this a vegetarian cucur and add in more corn and cabbage
  • LINGHAM’s Sriracha Sauce gave the cucur a moreish spicy bite but can be omitted if you are making this for young eaters.
  • One can also add Beansprout, Spring Onion and Bell Peppers for extra flavour and textures
  • Mix all the batter ready and keep in the fridge to chill till you are ready to fry them up
  • Serve with any of LINGHAM’s chili sauce for different flavours

A Golden Prosperous Chinese New Year with Garrett Popcorn

Garrett Popcorn Shops® Brings Sweetness to You with CNY Festive Tins

Festive season is all about sharing precious moments together, creating new memories and of course indulge in all sort of goodies! This Chinese New Year (CNY), it’s the year of the Red Fire Monkey and Garrett Popcorn is celebrating this season with specially designed festive 2016 Year of the Monkey Tins decorated with auspicious red stripes and whimsical monkey motifs.

Garrett Popcorn, a Chicago tradition since 1949 from USA, has always been a gourmet popcorn favorite of mine and my family. The reasons are purely simple. Every batch of Garrett Popcorn is handmade daily, using traditional methods, in copper kettles. Ingredients are of the finest quality and there are no preservatives. Once you have had a taste of Garrett Popcorn, you’ll know that there’s no other gourmet popcorn like this one. The crunch factor coupled with the various flavours are one-of-a-kind.

Sharing and gifting this season is simply a must for my family. During CNY, we love to have an excuse to nibble on our favorite cookies and snacks. In fact, I always have an assortment of CNY goodies on my table way even before we ring in the festive season. This brings back such fond memories of my childhood as I would always wait for each CNY to be able to indulge in all sorts of goodies. Glad to say, I do not have to wait a whole new year now to enjoy these but CNY is still a perfectly good excuse enjoy and share some sweetness with family and friends.

Ever since I had my first taste of Garrett Popcorn, I have been an ardent fan of this gourmet snack. They say once you have had the best, there’s no turning back. A recipe handed down over three generations, it’s obvious that Garrett Popcorn must be doing something deliciously right.

Garrett Popcorn’s signature has always been the Chicago Mix – a luscious sweet and salty mixture of CaramelCrisp and CheeseCorn. There is something just so tempting with combining layers of crunchy caramelized glazed popcorn with fluffy cheesy popcorn. It’s the mix of sweet and savory that brings dessert to another level of tempting flavours. Besides the Chicago Mix, there’s also Buttery or Nut CaramelCrisp.

Joining in the festive cheers, my family and I simply cannot resist including Garrett Popcorn on our table this season. As soon as my little one spies the signature logo and Tin of Garrett Popcorn on our dining table, he would literally be asking for a taste. I don’t blame him… can you?

There’s something truly happy about digging into a Garrett Tin of golden popcorn nuggets that always looked utterly tempting and sublime….

Take Garrett Popcorn for a road trip for extra happiness!

Garrett Popcorn makes the perfect indulgence and so we often are tempted to take the Tin everywhere with us. We took ours to the park where we had our little own popcorn picnic. It was our little perfect moment of walking a little and enjoying a little snack as we watch the sun goes down in the evening.

Sometimes in the evening while catching up on a little movie action, off goes the lid of Garrett Popcorn and someone’s little hand would be grabbing a handful of popcorn with much cheekiness. The deep luscious buttery and caramel note combined with cheesy corn can certainly put a big smile on anyone’s face… certainly mine and my family…

I daresay, Garrett Popcorn is great anytime of the day. Grab a Tin of Garrett Popcorn wherever you go or share this deliciousness with your family and friends this CNY and put a big smile of sweetness on their faces with this gourmet popcorn!

Café Aroma @ Dorsett Grand Subang

A New Refreshed Kopitiam at Café Aroma!

To finish the year with a big bang, Dorsett Grand Subang’s Café Aroma takes on a refreshed new concept of ‘Kopitiam’ through its menu and its ambiance. Starting this December 2015, Sous Chef Shabani Md. Akhir and team has whipped up a new kopitiam menu with a 5-star twist of classic street food favorites.

Café Aroma is set with small touches of kopitiam décor and diners can even catch actions of bread being toasted before butter and kaya are slapped on. Enjoy light snacks, quick lunches as well as dinner of Kopitiam faovrites served every Monday to Friday from 12.00 noon to 10.00 pm at Café Aroma.

Light snacks are great at any time of the day. Glad to also say that our Malaysian cuisine has a large array of snacks that I always enjoy whether it be breakfast, lunch, tea or any other time of the day. Café Aroma has quite a few Malaysian favorite snacks such as Homemade Egg Curry Puff (RM12) and Deep Fried Spring Roll (RM12).

The Homemade Egg Curry Puff is big in size. Stuffed with lots of spiced potato and chicken filling and boiled egg, the curry puff has got decent flavours. My only grip would be that I would wish for a thinner skin. The Deep Fried Spring Roll was stuffed with lots of vegetable, give the crispy rolls a fresh and delicious sweetness. Both makes decent snacks any time of the day!

Some classics just never go out of demand. Simple as it is, toast or steam bread is always a crowd favorite, especially during breakfast or tea time or supper. At Café Aroma, diners can also enjoy these with cups of hot coffee or tea. Enjoy their Roti Apollo with Kaya and Butter (RM7) or go for the standard toast or steamed White or Whole Meal Roti sandwiched with creamy butter and eggy kaya jam. There is also Half Boiled Eggs (RM4) to go with the toast or steam roti.

For a fancier sandwich, go for the Hong Kong Style French Toast (RM12). Sandwiched with chicken ham and cheese and dipped in egg batter before being fried, this one also makes a nice light lunch.

Our nation’s all-time-favorite dish of coconut rice with sambal is also available. Chef Shabani uses three types of rice in his Nasi Lemak Bungkus with Sotong Sambal (RM9) to achieve the light, fluffy and creamy grains. Served packed in banana leaf, the whole package is deliciously authentic.

The rice is very ‘lemak’ yet not heavy and the sambal has a good balance of savory and sweet with strips of brown squid. A wedge of boiled egg, roasted peanuts and fresh cucumber slices completed the package. This one is so good that one packet may not be enough!

There are also plenty of noodle choices at Café Aroma. Chef Shabani and team whips up a mean bowl of Mee Rebus Mak Limah as well as Nyonya Curry Laksa.

The Mee Rebus Mak Limah (RM12) has a bowl of yellow noodles topped with cucur, boiled egg, taukua, sotong sambal, fried shallot, spring onion, lime and a thick rich unctuous kuah mee rebus. It’s the gravy that make this bowl so piquantly delicious. It’s savory with hits of heat as well as lots of spices that gave the gravy the punch of flavours. Yum…

The Nyonya Curry Laksa (RM25) had a spiced laden gravy that is also decently creamy. There’s lots of beancurd puff, blanched vegetables with chicken char siew, boiled egg and mint leaves together with noodles that goes into this bowl. Add a squeeze of calamansi lime and savor the noodles with the side of robust and pungent sambal.

There is also the northern hit of Penang Asam Laksa (RM18). It may not be perfect but the rich fish gravy with sour notes is decently close in flavours. It has got a good hit of tangy notes from the tamarind with lots of fish flakes. Add on a drizzle of prawn paste to boost up the piquant and bold flavours of this classic dish.

For diners seeking more comfort food, a bowl of Claypot Loh Shi Fun (RM15) might just be the bowl. Drenched in aromatic dark soy sauce and other seasoning, the Loh Shi Fun is also topped with minced meat, mushrooms, fried shallot, spring onion and an egg. Mix them all together to create a slippery and smooth textures of soft and chewy noodles with a sweet and savory taste.

Café Aroma is perfect throughout the day for bites of Kopitiam favorites as well as a place to unwind with cups of coffee or tea. Enjoy Chef Shabani’s signature dishes set in a posh kopitiam ambiance today…
