Shi Yue Tian Claypot Chicken Rice Shop, Puchong: A Legacy of Claypot Chicken Rice!

With more than 20 years of legacy, there is a reason why it’s still around today!

Claypot chicken rice is available everywhere if you are looking for one. However, if you are a finicky eater, you won’t just settle for any claypot chicken rice! Now the famous one is said to originate from Kampar but I have yet to try that.

One wet evening, six foodies went in search of comfort food and we landed at Shi Yue Tian Claypot Chicken Rice Shop located in Puchong. We were told that this place holds a record for serving fabulous claypot chicken rice and be prepared to wait as each one is made to order. Grabbing the last table, we log in our order through the big menu on the wall. Ordering is easy as the menu is limited with its specialties. Although there is a ‘Tai Chow’ there, we did not let that deter our focus. Don’t expect anything on décor as this place is just a ‘Kopitiam’!

My detective mode was activated while we waited for our orders to arrive!

Shi Yue Tian uses charcoal to cook their rice… it’s no wonder this is the testament of a great pot of rice to come… J

Cooking is pure hardwork and sweat! Especially when one is manning so many hot stove at the same time. Salute!!

Lots of action and ingredients goes on to make a pot of scrumptious chicken rice. Even the uncooked marinated chicken pieces looked utterly delectable!

Double boiled soups are amped up with various ingredients and make a lovely pairing with the rice. I spied 12 choices on the menu but half was already out when we were there around 8pm. I would have loved to try their bestseller of Coconut Chicken Soup but it was sold out. Lucky for me, I saw another favorite of mine…

We had six bowls of four variations – Watercress Soup (RM5.00), Pork Belly Soup (RM5.50), Old Cucumber Soup (RM5.00) and Pickles Tofu Soup (RM5.00). I like my ‘Ham Choy Taufu’ Soup as it was quite flavorful and warming with its sour flavors. I also had a sip of the Pork Belly Soup and thought it was decent with peppery flavors. For the price one pays, all the soups are considered above average as it was brimming with ingredients to boost up the flavors.

Our Pot of Perfection with The Works arrives (not too long surprisingly) and I inhaled in the salted fish aroma with a heavenly sigh… The pot was also loaded with lots of goodies awaiting our hungry tummies. We ordered two large Claypot Chicken Rice with everything (RM14.00 each) to feed six hungry adults. The sizzling sound of the rice doused with the house special sauce is music to my ears! Big pieces of chicken, slivers of Chinese sausages, a ladle of ginger paste, salted fish and spring onions turned the pot of white rice into a piece of nostalgia.

Let this sit a bit and then mix it up!

I tend to let the rice sit because of the best part of the meal is the crispy bits of rice crackling stuck at the base of the pot! Are you a crispy rice fan like me?? J

Flavors were superb as I could taste the salted fish lending a fabulous aroma and taste to the gingery chicken and soy sauce rice. Chicken pieces are so tender and juicy while the grainy rice was lusciously coated with a myriad of flavors. My only gripe was the Chinese sausage tasted a bit low on the quality end. A splash of Chinese wine was added at the last second to boost up more flavors and aroma!

Blanched Lettuce was our vegetable requirement for that evening.

Total damaged was RM64.00 for two large pot, six soups, vegetable and Chinese tea! Definitely one of the best claypot chicken rice that I have tasted worthy of benchmarking. If you are looking for authentic flavors, this place has it. Owner has been lashing out his pot of rice for more than 20 years and looks like it will be around a bit as his son is taking over the operation. Great food takes time so if you are not one to wait, then I suggest going to other ones without the wait.

My Verdict? Cheap and ultimate comfort food with a touch of nostalgia guaranteed at Shi Yue Tian Claypot Chicken Rice Shop.

Meat was perfectly sliced and seafood was decently fresh. When dipped into their house signature sauce, it was superb! I grilled the pork till charred but grilled the beef almost rare. It’s definitely quality meat as these were really tender and succulent. The veggies were all cooked in the small little alley of the copper plate brimming with soup. With the juices of the meat running into the soup, it certainly boosts up the flavors of the veggies and soup!

Grilled Marinated Pork Belly (RM6.90++ normal price) was a hit with me! I like the pork belly as they were bursting with flavors from the marinade before being grilled. The bits of belly fat added the deliciousness to the meat itself! Yum…

Som Tam with Soft Shell Crab (RM8.90++ normal price) was a nicely spruced up Thai papaya salad topped with crispy fried soft shell crab. It was pretty decent in my opinion as I love the tangy salad with some lethal chili padi bits. Soft shell crab was crisp and oil free.

Pineapple Fish Fillet (RM7.90++ normal price) was average for me. It was simple fish fillet deep fried and dressed up with mayo and thousand island sauce.

Shioyaki Squid (RM8.90++ normal price) was lovely. Chunks of squid were deep fried to golden perfection and were tender.

If the above doesn’t tickle your fancies yet, there is more!!

Bar B Q Plaza if having an in house promotion with a Korean theme. Check out their Korean sets which is available at all their outlets.

I personally felt that their Korean Family Set (RM59.90++ promotion price) offers the best value for the price. Two huge platters were served with loads of meat and seafood and Korean condiments.

Korean Family Set meat platter has the following beef, pork, chicken and veggies doused with a Korean sauce that is simply magnificent. This is my ultimate favorite platter that night.

Korean Family Set seafood platter was pretty good as there was shrimp, fish fillet, jelly fish, squid, bacon and veggies. Bacon makes everything marvelous… wink wink!

Condiments of Lettuce, pickled Kimchi, seasoned Seaweed, Garlic and Anchovies are part of the Korean set meals.

In addition to all the above food, we also checked out the following normal price dishes…

All time customer favorite appetizer of Fried Bacon Roll (RM7.50). Seriously, how can one not like fried bacon? Rolled with enoki mushroom, these babies are super addictive and I keep popping them like snacks! I would order these anytime… deal or no deal! J

New item Cheezy Roll (RM6.90) was crunchy spring roll wrappers with melted cheese.

Garlic Fried Rice (RM2.50) is a must order to go with the grilled meats.

We sampled two of their new drinks from Korean menu which are Korean Honey Jujube (RM5.50) in the front and Korean Lemon Citron (RM5.50) at the back. If you are in the mood for love, Honey Jujube is a sweet deal while Lemon Citron has a more sourish flavor. There is always the house Green Tea (RM2.50) with unlimited refills!

The infamous BBQ even has a super cute mascot called Bar B Gon!

No tricks or cheats… just a Great Meal Deal for those who enjoy honest-to-goodness barbeque food! Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen: Sticky Wicked Chicken - Stickaliciously Good!

I have to confess… I have a profound weakness for fried chicken! I need my fix every few weeks and there is nothing better to satisfy my soul than a good piece of fried chicken. J

I had Popeyes when I was studying in US and was ecstatic when Popeyes arrived here. Named after a character in the then popular movie, The French Connection, owner Al Copeland founded the fast food chain in 1972 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Louisiana ambience with its signature orange colored theme, I like the spacious décor and its jazzy posters.

When I found out Popeyes has just introduced a wicked chicken strips, I headed to one of the Popeyes’ outlet in The Curve to check out how wicked it was!

Popeyes Sticky Wicked Chicken is thin strips of tender, juicy, all-white meat chicken marinated for at least 12 hours in authentic Louisiana seasonings, hand-battered and breaded in the restaurants, then freshly tossed in a special sweet and spicy sauce and is served up twisted, curly and wicked.

First bite of this stickalicious chook was lovely. Crispy on the outside and meltingly tender in the inside, Sticky Wicked Chicken strips was lightly coated with a slightly sweet sauce which is quite similar to the Thai chili sauce. It’s actually quite addictive and the stickiness gives me an excuse to lick my fingers clean… yum!

With this, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen in Malaysia celebrates the arrival of the new Sticky Wicked Chicken by rewarding customers with a ‘Meal for 2’ promotion in which they could save up to 30%! For only RM20.60, patrons get to enjoy one box of Sticky Wicked Chicken, two pieces of Popeyes’ signature Bonafide Chicken, three pieces of Bonafide Chicken Tenders, two pieces of Popeyes signature biscuits, one large mash potato or coleslaw and two regular-sized cups of Ice Lemon Tea. If that’s not enough to satisfy your palate, the Sticky Wicked Chicken is also available ala carte at RM4.95.

I also devoured their bestsellers like their all time signature Bonafide® chicken marinated in Louisiana Seasonings. I know why I keep returning to Popeyes… it’s their perfected fried chicken which is consistently juicy, crispy and golden flavors that seems to satisfy my soul. The size also matters as I can get full with a two piece and their irresistible sides.

I read a few people commenting on the chicken here has less flavors compared to another giant chicken chain but I personally didn’t think so because I do like the clean flavors of Popeyes and I could actually taste the natural chicken flavors. It is also less oily in my opinion with a moist and tender meat inside the chicken.

What I do adore about Popeyes Coleslaw is the chunky shredded cabbages and carrots. The textures lend a more homemade feel and since I am a big fan of pickles, I love that pickles is incorporated into the slaw.

Mashed Potatoes are my all time favorite carbs. The mash here is pretty good as it has the creamy and smooth texture with Cajun brown gravy and minced meat. I usually do not take chili sauce for my fried chicken but instead dip it in the potato gravy which makes it even more succulent.

One thing that separates Popeyes from the other giant chicken chain is its signature southern Biscuits that comes with the meal. Malaysians may not be used to this biscuits which is a cross between a crumbly cookie and scones but I do quite like it. It has a soft, fluffy and crumbly texture and I use this to mop up the potato gravy again!

Cajun Battered Fries are French fries fried till crisp with Cajun seasoning. Golden and slightly thicker than normal shoestring fries, this is another highly addictive side with a hint of spices undertone.

Besides those, there is the Louisiana Tenders, which are boneless strips of fried chicken. These are lovely for those who detest bones!

Fried Fish Fillets are also deep fried with their signature batter and its average for me. I would have to say it’s a little better than another giant fast food chain too because you can actually feel the flaky fish with the tartare sauce.

Popcorn Shrimps, battered crispy shrimps in their signature batter, which are so easy to eat. I could probably have these as snacks in front of a tv… hehehe!

I also sampled their Po´ Boy sandwich with Popcorn Shrimps. Simply scrumptious with hot fried crispy Popcorn Shrimps, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise!

Being a typical Asian, we got to have our rice. Popeyes also has a few rice dishes such as this Popcorn Shrimp Rice Bowl. Popcorn Shrimps crowned the rice and was dressed up with brown gravy. There is also a layer of mashed beans beneath the rice. Not too bad to get my rice fix!

Desserts were minimal but I did enjoy the three desserts they offered. We had tiramisu, chocolate cheese and strawberry cheese in a cup. For that price, I just could not complain as it was quite nice with the chocolate being my favorite as it was rich and chocolatey.

If I had a choice, this would be my preferred Fried Chicken place to satisfy my cravings. Fear not, I believe there is great potential in Popeyes and hope to be able to see more of this fantastic fried chicken chain to have more outlets soon. I currently get my fix at a@Curve whenever I can! Good value for size, quality and consistency... this is one of the better fast food that I do not mind eating for once! J

So don’t miss out on the new feel and taste of the Sticky Wicked Chicken, only available at Popeyes stores in Klang Valley located in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Sunway Piramid, Mid Valley, Wangsa Walk, e@Curve, The Mines Shopping Fair and Jalan Yap Kwan Seng, open from 10.30am to 10.30pm.
