Proud Janny Restaurant, The Weld KL: Going Fruity in Malaysian Cuisine

Making Malaysia Proud with Malaysian Tropical Fruit Cuisine!

It has certainly been a while since I was back at Proud Janny Restaurant and so I was actually really glad when I found out that there is a new menu featuring Fruit Based Cuisine. I had my first taste of Chef Ryan Khang’s dishes at Proud Janny last year and love his refreshing take on his dishes. Located at The Weld Kuala Lumpur, Proud Janny has been serving up international and local dishes using organic and sustainably-grown food. The restaurant cum café focuses on serving breakfast and lunch to the office crowd with temptations of Nyonya, Malaysian local delights, Western and gorgeous desserts.

Proud Janny’s recent stint in the highly prolific Agrobazaar Singapore had led Chef Ryan to develop a menu comprising of Malaysia’s favorite tropical fruits incorporated into Malaysian cuisine. The menu was proudly served to not one but two Prime Ministers, Dato Seri Dr. Najib Razak, as well as the Honourable Mr. Lee Hsien Loong.

I headed over to Proud Janny one fine Saturday for lunch together with some foodies to meet up with Chef Ryan. Looking as good as ever, Chef Ryan greeted us with his usual charm and served up some wine and nibbles to start the lunch. Housemade Fried Potato Chips and Crispy Corn may be simple snacks but these were quite addictive and delicious with the red wine, Raiz from Chile.

On the Fruit Based Cuisine menu, there are five dishes together with two desserts. Kicking off the list was a very delectable Young Mango Kerabu served with grilled squid. Thinly shredded medium ripe mango offers a yin and yang of sweetness and sourness punched up with shallots, crispy anchovies, herbs and a tangy dressing. Chargrilled squid is nicely cooked and added a yummy texture to the kerabu salad. The kerabu is the perfect started to whet our appetites for more to come.

Tamarind and Mango Fried Noodle is inspired from our local Mee Goreng and looks just like the local dish till we tried it. The noodle has great depth of savory, sweet and sour balance of flavours. The mango salad gave the tamarind flavour noodles a fruity touch and brought lightness to the street food. Served with prawns and crispy anchovies, fried shallots, taukua and beansprout, it is a dish that is easy to enjoy and won’t leave a heavy aftermath after enjoyment.

I do enjoy a good Mee Rebus and when I saw the Johor Style Mee Rebus, I was curious about what fruit was incorporated into the dish. The dish had prawns, beef, egg, fritter, fried shallots and chili with yellow noodle and thick brown gravy. Mix these together and add a squeeze of calamansi lime to the dish. The gravy is not too sweet but lean towards a piquant savory flavour. Chef Ryan exposed his secret ingredient which was white dragon fruit cooked into the gravy. A cleverly idea indeed as the dragon fruit thickened up the gravy naturally and added a light subtle sweetness to the gravy. It also gave the dish a subtle natural texture and flavour.

A pretty looking rice of Dragonfruit Rice arrived after the noodle dish. Served with dragonfruit marinated chicken, fried egg, sambal, keropok, cucumber and tomatoes, there is also scoops of fresh dragonfruit. An interesting dish and combination and the rice was also tinged with the red dragon fruit. Again, the dish was cleverly controlled and balanced with a light sweetness. I was actually enjoying the dragon fruit marinated chargrilled chicken. It has a fruity flavour and made the chicken wonderfully succulent. The sambal and keropok does wonder for the dish as well.

I always save the best for last and the Fruit Curry with Chicken is my favorite dish of the menu for savory. The curry is a confit of kampung chicken cooked with lots of spices and herbs and paired with sweet lychees and pineapples. Kampung chicken can be tough but due to the slow cooked process, the chicken here was tender and moist, absorbing all the curry gravy well.

The curry gravy is not too spicy in heat but has a good note of heat and spices balanced with a lovely fruity sweetness. Truth be told, I enjoyed spoonful after spoonful of curry gravy. Its beautifully moreish and not your typical curry. If you love sweetness in your curry, give this a try and you’ll know what I mean. Super yum!

Chef Ryan is a man of many skills including pastry. For dessert, we had Banana Cake and Cendol Cake. The names did not do the cake justice as both are pretty complex in the makings. The flavours echoed its name and the cake has layers of flavours.

Banana Cake has sponge sandwiched with caramelized banana and cream and is topped with jewels of praline of dried fruits and nuts. Although I am not a banana fan, I had a taste and find it lovely with its caramelized flavour and various textures. The Cendol Cake looked like our local Pandan Cake but this one has a Gula Melaka cream with pandan custard and pandan sponge before being topped with dessicated coconut.

The Fruit Based Cuisine will be made available for a short period of time so make sure to head over to Proud Janny to check it out. For Corporate employees who works along Jalan Raja Chulan, just present your office business card to the staff at Proud Janny to receive some discount. T&C applies.

Let’s Have A NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto Marrakech Tea Party!

Infusing Creative Flavours with my Marrakech Tea!

I love parties. The older I get, the more I adore the excuse of throwing parties. The reason is simple. A party is the perfect excuse to round up family and friends to get together for a good time!

With any parties, food and drinks usually takes center stage. Usually in my parties, I always focus on the food. This time, I thought why not focus on creating some delicious thirst quenching drinks and served up simple food like snacks or canapés. After all, parties are made for mingling. And with the recent Hari Raya festive holidays, it’s perfect for me to put on my thinking cap for some fun drinks for parties.

Now previously, I was given the task to enjoy my NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto Marrakech Tea here. I find the tea really delicious and easy to be paired with many dishes and snacks. Whipping up a cup of hot or cold Marrakech Tea is easy with the NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto Mini Me. It is perfect for anytime of the day as I find it soothing throughout the day. Let’s not forget that it can aid digestion and provide comfort, especially when everyone is either indulging in holiday feasts or running around.

Of course, the best way to enjoy a cup of Marrakech Tea is in its original recipe.

With all the late nights of working and blogging, I always enjoy a cup of tea to lend some comfort. After the introduction of the NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto Marrakech Tea, I have been sipping hot Marrakech Tea during my late nights. I find the soothing green tea very drinkable and the minty note utterly refreshing. This helps me stay awake at night. In the early mornings after my late nights, the Marrakech Tea works more wonder by perking up my senses. Soothing and smooth, the tea calms my tiredness.

My first recipe is the Marrakech Tea Smoothie. Simply perfect for mornings, I used my favorite fruit to partner the tea and threw in some greens for a healthy touch. I love this smoothie. It is very refreshing and minty, perfect for a morning wake up call. The second recipe is also a smoothie featuring Marrakech Tea with Kiwi Smoothie. This one is very tangy and refreshing. I love tangy flavours so this smoothie is another great drink to kick off my mornings. If you are having a breakfast or brunch party, smoothies are sure to charm your guests…

I brewed the Marrakech Tea with less water than the standard recommended for a stronger flavour since I am jazzing it up.

MARRAKECH TEA SMOOTHIE

100gm Fresh Pineapple
50gm Fresh Baby Spinach Leaves
Marrakech Tea (cold brew)
Ice Cubes
Fresh Mint Leaves (optional)

Blend them all together till it reaches a smooth consistency. Enjoy!

MARRAKECH TEA WITH KIWI SMOOTHIE

1 Kiwi (green or yellow is fine)
Marrakech Tea (cold brew)
Juice of half Lime
1tbsp Honey
Ice Cubes

Peel and chopped the kiwi. Add into blender with Marrakech Tea, lime juice from the half lime, honey and some ice cubes. Blend till smooth and enjoy.

I was inspired by a famous Indian drink called Lassi made from yoghurt as a base. And so I whipped up a simple Marrakech Tea Lassi. My Lassi uses Greek yoghurt for a stronger and thicker beverage. If you are a fan of Lassi, this one is simple and delicious!

MARRAKECH TEA LASSI

100gm Greek Yoghurt
Marrakech Tea (cold brew)
10 Fresh Mint Leaves (adjust to your taste)
1tbsp Honey
Ice Cubes

Blend every ingredient together and enjoy this creamy tangy concoction.

If you are having lunch parties, these recipes of lighter and refreshing notes will be very enjoyable to lighten up the day. My Marrakech Tea with Apple Mocktail, Marrakech Tea with Blackberry and Marrakech Tea with Cucumber and Calamansi are some recipes of easy-to-drink mocktails. Adults and kids will enjoy them.

The Marrakech Tea with Apple Mocktail has apple, tea and mint working in harmony. It has a soothing sweetness with a fruity apple note. The small cubes of green apples make great textures and flavours in the mocktail. The Marrakech Tea with Blackberry came up simply because I love berries and I happen to have it in my fridge that day. This one has a sour note and is an excellent source of anti-oxidant. Marrakech Tea with Cucumber and Calamansi was also concocted from another favorite drink of mine. I didn’t juice any cucumber for this recipe but I added the chopped cucumber as a textural component. This way, the tea and mint shines while light notes of cucumber with calamansi lend a background note.

MARRAKECH TEA WITH APPLE MOCKTAIL

100gm Apple Juice
Marrakech Tea (cold brew)
Green Apple (chopped in small cubes)
Ice Cubes

Put apple juice and Marrakech Tea into a shaker with ice cubes. Shake them well and pour into a tall glass. Top with chopped green apple and enjoy.

MARRAKECH TEA WITH BLACKBERRIES

3-5 Blackberries
Marrakech Tea (cold brew)
Ice Cubes
Honey (optional)

Crush the blackberries with a spoon in a serving glass and pour in the Marrakech Tea. Add in ice cubes and honey of the blackberry is too sour.
*Blackberries can be replace with strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and other berries. Adjust the honey according to taste.

MARRAKECH TEA WITH CUCUMBER AND CALAMANSI

Marrakech Tea (cold brew)
Juice of half Calamansi
Japanese Kyuri Cucumber (skin removed and chopped to small cubes)
Ice Cubes

Top the Marrakech Tea with juice from half a calamansi lime. Add ice cubes and topped with chopped cucumbers. Enjoy!

For evening parties, I whipped up a virgin cocktail version of Marrakech Tea Mojito. I love this recipe. In fact, my family loves this one a lot too. The flavours are vibrant, sour, minty and invigorating. It’s a perfect thirst-quencher for the evening. Guests can make their own Marrakech Tea Mojitos too! Simply provide the ingredients on a table and tell the guests to mix their own. The tea makes a nice addition to the Mojito while the mint is simply a must.

MARRAKECH TEA MOJITO

Marrakech Tea (cold brew)
100ml Sprite or 7-up
5-7 sprigs Fresh Mint Leaves
1stalk Fresh Lemongrass (bruised to release its flavour and aroma)
Juice of half Lime
Ice Cubes

Put mint leaves into a glass and muddled it with a muddler or a spoon. Add in Marrakech Tea, Sprite, lemongrass, juice from half a lime and ice cubes. Stir the drink with the lemongrass well for flavour to combine and enjoy.

*Go ahead and spike this up with rum if you must…

Besides all the cold beverages, here’s another two ways to jazz up the Marrakech Tea. Simply add in spice or citrus to add another flavour note to the minty tea.

I added a stick of cinnamon and some lemon slices to my hot Marrakech Tea. The Marrackech Tea with Cinnamon brings up more Moroccan flavours as Moroccans do often paired cinnamon or other spices with mint. The heat from the hot tea will gently infused the cinnamon and mint tea beautifully.

Lemon goes well with tea and mint. So when you’re calling it a night but have some trouble sleeping, Marrakech Tea with Lemon might just work out your tiredness and calm down your senses. This one is also good to cure dryness in throat. After a party with food, Marrakech Tea with Lemon will definitely end the evening well. The light floral and citrus note mingles well with the mint tea.

And there you have it… Ten ways to enjoy NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto Marrakech Tea!

Make these on daily basis or in any parties. All my recipes use easy readily available ingredients in our fridge and with minimal ingredients. So there’s really no excuse to make these fast and simple for ourselves or guests. If you didn’t notice, no sugar is needed as the Marrakech Tea is sweetened already. Honey is used to add a mellow balance to citrus fruits.

I enjoyed the smooth and cool NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto Marrakech Tea very much. My Marrakech Tea is Best Drank in its original recipe and also when it’s jazzed up with fruits, vegetables, spices and more.

This has certainly been a fun filled journey with NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto! Like all good things, I am glad I am able to share my experience of the Nescafe Dolce Gusto Marrakech Tea. I am already looking forward to other coffee and tea capsules. Easy to whip up in the comfort of any place, simply rejuvenating to drink and definitely more affordable than buying a drink outside, it’s no wonder I am hooked.

It’s a perfect cup every time with the Nescafe Dolce Gusto!

BreadFruits, Desa Sri Hartmas: Perfect for Cravings of Healthy and Hearty Breakfast & Brunch!

A Great Place to Start Your Day!

I have heard about this place through many foodies but somehow had never found the time to visit it. Opportunity came one lovely Sunday and I took my family to check out the place. It’s not difficult to locate BreadFruits which is located in Desa Sri Hartamas. With a promise to offer diners 100% natural full nutrient, multi-vitamin balanced diet, BreadFruits serves up healthy and fresh offerings on a daily basis all day.

I was glad to grab the last table when I arrived around noon. Soon after, BreadFruits was packed. The café has a small dining area with half of the space taken up by a long bar counter and a small area of fruit for sale. Despite the small space, I really didn’t mind it as it was quite comfortable on the eye. The place uses natural elements like wood and bricks with black fixtures to contrast with white washed walls. There is a display of Malaysian Wild Honey for sale and this is also used by BreadFruits in their food and drinks.

Service was pretty good despite it being so busy. Wait staff were fast and efficient. There is a long chalk board behind the counter displaying its menu of fresh fruit juices, detox drinks, smoothies and more. Menu came in a creatively made corrugated board with a tight list of offerings.

BreadFruits serve all-day dining of breakfast and brunch dishes that comprises mostly of western breakfast, sandwiches, pasta and snacks. When a café does something well, it’s because the owners are smart enough to offer what they do best on a small list rather than a huge list. With this said, you may have seen what I am about to blog before in others but what the heck, it’s my two-cents worth of my personal taste of what I like of BreadFruits. I also thought they deserve a mentioned as great things are always meant to be shared…

Our orders were logged in. A Liver Cleanser juice (RM9.90) was my choice and it was a great one! A mix of beetroot and other fruits, I love the taste of it. Nicely chilled, the juice tasted of fresh and natural sweetness. There are lots of other options but the main ingredients are fresh fruits and vegetables.

I ordered the Brunch Pasta with 7 Min Egg (RM16.80) for my son and he loved it! So did I… we love the presentation too. A 7 minute boiled egg was sitting snuggly in the middle of linguine pasta covered in a light cream sauce with lots of button mushrooms, bacon, cherry tomato, rocket leaves and a sprinkling of black pepper.

Simply pour out the soft boiled egg and you get a deliriously velvety and silky pasta combination. It has a nice balance of creaminess, not the usual heavy and cloying one in carbonara. This version feels light and the combination of bacon with mushrooms and tomatoes certainly makes me feel like a great breakfast dish. Despite the amount of black pepper, it was not spicy at all as my little one polished this off happily. It’s a cleverly thought after dish and certainly warrants a reorder.

My other half and I shared SatisFry Up and Chicken Avocado Rocket on Sourdough simply because we wanted more variety.

SatisFry Up (RM22.80) seemed to appear in most of the tables that day. It’s a great deal as this breakfast comes with coffee or tea and a juice of the day. For those who love a big breakfast without the guilt, you will love SatisFry Up. You get a choice of pork sausage or bacon, scramble egg or sunny side up egg with sautéed mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, fried mashed potato, arugula and choice of toast. I opted for the pork sausage and scrambled egg with the works.

Love the Juice of the Day! I think it was orange and pineapple. Nothing sorts of those watery versions but just like the Liver Cleanser I had, nicely thick from fresh fruits. Coffee was decent.

Our plate looked just as expected on what I saw on other foodies’ blogs. Consistent is a great thing. I was pleased at the pork sausage. Again here, BreadFruits served a nice juicy and big sausage that was a little peppery. Made from meat, the pork sausage had a great bite of textures from the cuts of the meat. It was also juicy and so flavorful. I dislike breakfast plates with those teeny tiny sausages or hotdogs as they don’t seemed hearty enough.

The scrambled egg looked really good! Creamy and a bright sunshine yellow, it was fluffy and tasted fresh and eggy. I like everything on that plate except the mashed potato which I thought was only average. That piece of sourdough with butter was so good… I am going to order more bread the next round. I was ok with the undressed arugula since the rest was quite rich and this helps to tone it down.

I saw another favorite that was present at a lot of tables was the Smoked Salmon Breakfast Platter, serving up smoked salmon with eggs, avocado and the works. I am already eyeing this for my next visit as well.

The Chicken Avocado Rocket on Sourdough (RM16.80) was really hearty and wholesome. Thick slices of sourdough has juicy grilled chicken, slices of fresh creamy avocado and lots of arugula leaves in between and was also smothered with a tangy wild honey mustard dressing.  The sandwich was rich in flavors and echoed the healthy notes of the other dishes.

On the side, a simple potato and arugula salad with light citrus vinaigrette, onions, olive and toasted pine nuts were pretty good.

I like BreadFruits. The food and ambience has a great vibe and is perfect for breakfast or brunch. Value for money and efficient service are more plus points. I also like that it showcase simple dishes made very well and its range of juices. I will definitely be back…
