Nong & Jimmy Thai BBQ @ Kampung Baru Ampang

Thai Classics for Lunch!

It has been a while since I last stepped into Nong & Jimmy Thai Seafood BBQ. When a recent invite came, I found out that Nong & Jimmy has gone through some changes including a new management and a new location as well as new menu. Known for serving rustic Thai BBQ, my last visit there was vividly scrumptious and sweaty.

Now that the new management has moved to a location nearby their old one in Ampang, this one is certainly bigger and more spacious as well as nicely ventilated with lots of fan. It is indeed cooler than their previous metal shack and there’s plenty of parking space too unlike their previous one before.

The new Nong & Jimmy serves lunch and dinner as I was told while the previous one only opened for dinner. The new location is pretty easy to locate if you have Waze and the signage is big and bold so one cannot miss it. At the front of the restaurant is the BBQ pit where the usual BBQ seafood would be cooked on.

I was wondering why the BBQ pit was not lite up until I was told that Nong & Jimmy only serves their BBQ during dinner hours because it was too hot at lunch hour. In addition, most customers has less time for lunch than dinner. Fear not, there is still plenty of Thai dishes to choose from in the menu.

The ambiance was very minimally decorated and it was alfresco area inside and outside of the restaurant. A large cement tank outside of the restaurant held live fishes to ensure freshness at the restaurant.

Drinks came and I happily sipped my fresh Kedondong Juice with Salty Plum while my other half enjoyed a refreshing chilled Fresh Coconut as well as a Soy Bean Milk for the little one.

First up, a delectable looking Deep Fried Chicken with Mango Salad (RM16 – small). Crispy and juicy chicken topped with a piquant mango salad that was deliciously addictive. I would be happy with this dish alone with steamed rice.

A coconut filled with Seafood Otak Otak (RM25) was next and it was filled with lots of tender seafood and eggy spiced otak otak custard. Flavours were decent and goes well with rice but I would have loved a bit more spices and heat to kick it up another notch. Seafood was fresh and well-cooked and there was plenty to go around the table.

I have savored Kaeng Sam before and it’s a dish that packs a huge punch in flavour. The Deep Fried Siakap with Kaeng Sam (RM50) here didn’t have the wow factor that most Kaeng Sam are famous for. Nevertheless, the fish is fresh, sweet and nicely cooked. Lots of vegetables goes into the Kaeng Sam and I was particularly fond of the fresh bamboo shoots. I would have loved big robust tangy and spicy flavours to be amp up in this case.

Although Nong & Jimmy do not serve BBQ seafood during lunch, they do have lots of seafood cooked in their menu such as this Black Pepper Crab (Seasonal Price). Despite it looking pretty dark, the flavours are super yum. One gets a big hit of peppery note with a luscious aroma from the sticky dark pepper sauce. Crab was meaty and sweet too.

For fillers, there is the Thai Laksa (RM10.90) served with lots of vegetables for our own DIY. The Laksa soup was served on the side and this hearty bowl of piquant and sublime thick fish gravy will take your taste sense to an explosion of fireworks in your mouth. I loved this a lot. Finally a dish that kicks and makes me sweat. For me to love any Thai restaurants, their food must have a bold kick of flavours of savory, sweet, spicy and sour. Not for the faint-hearted but damn shiok!

More fillers with Pineapple Fried Rice (RM8) and Seafood Fried Rice (RM8). The Pineapple Fried Rice obviously has lots of small cubed pineapples with seafood and raisin. It’s on the sweeter end compared to the Seafood Fried Rice. I prefer the latter for its simplicity and flavour.

Nong & Jimmy wasn’t how I remembered it but that’s because I didn’t have the Thai BBQ like I did the last time. Lunch was sufficient nevertheless but looks like I will be coming back for dinner simply because I love their Thai BBQ seafood and that awesome Yau Char Kwai with Pandan Kaya that they are also famous for.

La Risata Bar Pizzeria Ristorante @ Medan Damansara

Have Yourselves a Merry La Risata Christmas!

More merriment awaits at La Risata Bar Pizzeria Ristorante and it’s a delicious one too. This festive month, make sure to visit La Risata at Medan Damansara for an unforgettable holiday feast filled with lots of sumptuous Christmas or New Year dishes. Time is precious and holiday seasons do kept everyone exceptionally busy. With little time left for festive dinners, diners can now enjoy a feast at La Risata or at the very comforts of their own home with La Risata’s takeaway festive menu.

La Risata is one of my personal favorite places to dine. Opened since 1996, the restaurant also has another branch in Ampang. After my first visit last year, I really have a soft spot for this restaurant serving Italian cuisine. I was absolutely smitten with their pizza and pasta and had return on my own with my family to enjoy the dishes here.

This evening, a few of us gathered here again for a sneak peek at their Christmas and New Year’s menu. Going traditional, La Risata is offering a range of holiday classics where diners can mix and match to create their very own feast.

Pizza Mozzarella

As mentioned again, La Risata’s pizza is superb! Made in their wood oven, the pizzas here have a really scrumptious rustic crust with their house made tomato sauce and choices of ingredients. We had their Pizza Mozzarella with a topping of homemade smoked mozzarella, anchovy and marinated grilled sweet peppers. Though it looks simple, the flavours are spot on. Lots of various sweetness from the tomato sauce and grilled peppers worked well with creamy and smoky mozzarella cheese with hints of salty anchovies.

Tonno Pinna Blu Alla Griglia Con Gnocchi Nero Di Seppia

The next dish of Grilled Blue Fin Tuna with Squid Ink Gnocchi in Lemon Butter Sauce showed off the chef’s creativity where he makes the softest and fluffiest gnocchi stained with squid ink. Smothered in a pool of citrusy creamy sauce and crowned with grilled tuna slices and rocket leaves, the dish had all the flavours of salty, sweet, tangy and finished with a hint of bitterness from the rockets leaves. I adored the little pillows of gnocchi so much I did had a few more than my serving.

Insalata Razzo E Pera

Minimal ingredients on a dish reaffirms that one only needs a few to make a dish stand out. The Rocket and Pear Salad with Lemon Dressing & Shaved Parmesan is one of such dishes. The light citrusy and bitter rocket leaves paired with sweet crisp pear slices and robust salty parmesan has great flavours and is further enhanced by a vibrant lemon vinaigrette.

Tacchino Arrosto

What’s a Christmas feast without the classic turkey? La Risata’s Roast Turkey with Traditional Chestnut Stuffing, Roasted Vegetable with Cranberry Sauce and Giblet Sauce (RM338++) is certainly a treat for many. The Roast Turkey is beautifully moist and comes with lots of beautifully roasted Brussel sprouts, carrots and potatoes. The vegetables were cooked just right with a tender but firm Brussel sprouts, fluffy and creamy potatoes with a light crust and soft baby carrots. What makes this extra special is their house made giblet gravy and tangy cranberry sauce which we all cannot get enough off!

The Roast Turkey with Traditional Chestnut Stuffing, Roasted Vegetable with Cranberry Sauce and Giblet Sauce is available for dine-in or takeaway with advance notice. A 4kg turkey serves 10 to 12 persons. Should diners want individual servings instead of whole turkey, do call and ask as La Risata may have smaller servings available depending on availability.

Cosciotto D’Agnello

La Risata’s Roast Leg of Lamb with Root Vegetable & Rosemary Sauce (RM228++) is simply the best lamb I have had this year. It is just cooked to perfection in my book. Cooked to medium with a lush pink inside, the lamb has a very moreish spice crust that really takes the flavours to a lusciousness. The meat is so juicy and tender that it was a crowd favorite that evening. The 3kg roast leg of lamb comes with sautéed chat potatoes, mixed vegetables and fresh rosemary sauce.

Every festive feast is never complete without desserts. La Risata is offering their festive signatures of Tiramisu (RM160++), Zucotto and Torta Di Zucca (RM80++).

Tiramisu

Enjoy the classic Italian favorite of Tiramisu with its layers of coffee soaked sponge fingers and fluffy creamy mascarpone cheese. Finished with hits of bittersweet cocoa powder and fresh berries, it’s a dessert that continues to win many hearts all the time at an Italian meal.

Zucotto

Zucotto, a beautiful semi frozen dessert from Florence, Italy, also makes a show stopper in presentation. The dome is made from layers of cake and ice cream. There are alcohol versions and none alcohol ones too. The version here is gorgeous as we enjoyed the frozen fluffy and icy treat after a meal of meaty dishes. It really doubles as a palate cleanser and is refreshing as a finisher.

Torta Di Zucca

Saving the last and the best of dessert is Torta Di Zucca or Pumpkin Pie. This dessert took me to cloud nine. Not the ordinary pumpkin pie that I always enjoy, La Risata version is simply divine. A beautiful almond crust with a layer of spiced pumpkin finished with more almond crumbles, I fought hard for a second piece of this awesome pie. A must-order if you love pumpkin pie as this version really is fabulous and perfect for the festive holidays!!

The above selections are available from 5 December 2015 till 10 January 2016 (or while stocks last) from all La Risata outlets. Make your reservations and orders at least 3 days in advance to avoid disappointment this holiday!

Besides La Risata, do visit the group’s other restaurant, The Daily Grind for their festive menu of Xmas Burger (RM38), Roast Spring Chicken (RM48), Roast Mustard Lamb (RM48), Roast Turkey with Trimmings (RM338 – 5kg), OMG! B Station Korean Restaurant @ Jalan Ampang

Healthy & Healing Korean Food

Jalan Ampang area is well-known as a Korean town. It’s been a hub for many Korean expats living there and has their own little township setup at one area. So much so, many of them have setup their own businesses around that area. It is filled with Korean grocery marts, Korean restaurants and many more businesses catered to Koreans.

My family and I really enjoy Korean food. We savor them often a few times a month and found their food very robust in flavours as well as hearty and delicious. Mention Korean cuisine and Kimchi, BBQ and stews comes to mind immediately. A recent gathering at B-Station Korean Restaurant really change my views on Korean food. B-Station is the heart and soul of Mr. John Lee, a Korean living in Malaysia for the last 27 years. He open B-Station 8 years ago when he realize he couldn’t find any healthy Korean places to eat. Though there are many Korean restaurants, John is very health conscious and keeps to a strict regimen in his diet for healthy and homemade food free from msg or any preservatives.

A man of many talents, John and his family has other non-food related businesses as well. Nevertheless, John decided to open B-Station to cater to diners who are also health conscious and enjoys healthy Korean food. John is passionate about cooking, in fact, he does all the cooking at B-Station with some help. John goes all out to make everything he can from scratch. After a few words exchange with him, we found out he makes his own Kimchi, Tteokbokki, sausage, bean curd, enzymes, soy bean powder and many more items that he serves in his café. His healthy regiment has really paid off and John looks really good for his age. After finding out his secret to his youthfulness, I reminded myself that it really pays to know what you eat. A good lifestyle of healthy food and exercise really can make a lot of difference…

B-Station is unlike any café I have been. One does not feel like you are walking into a restaurant or café. It feels more like walking into someone’s home. Fill to the max with lots old school and home knick knacks and trinkets from John’s own collection from family and friends. It is indeed a photographer’s dream as I took a lot of photos because the ambiance is just too adorable to resist. There’s plenty of greens and flowers incorporated into the café as well to give the whole place a garden feel as well. Checkered table clothes, white wash walls, tables and chairs and more, everything gives out the home feel vibe. Tables are cleverly sectioned off to give one more privacy while dining.

No wifi here because John feels that everyone should be enjoying the moment and talking to each other while dining!

The menu at B-Station comprises of Korean dishes as well as some Western dishes. We were there for lunch and tried both Korean and Western as well since we had our little one with us. There is also dessert so save some room for desserts ya…

While waiting for our meals to come, we had their homemade enzyme. John makes his own enzymes in his kitchen and there is a really unique one call Omija Enzyme. Made from a fruit herb called Omija, the fruit is very unique as it is a five-flavour berry that possesses five basic flavours of salty, sweet, sour, spicy and bitter. The fruit also expels a beautiful red color. True enough, when we tried the Omija Enzyme, it really has that five flavours that comes through in a delicious note. The other enzymes were refreshing too, especially the Mojito Enzyme.

From L to R: Iced Lemon Enzyme Juice, Vinegar Enzyme, Mojito Enzyme and Omija Enzyme (RM 7.80)

For the kids, they had the Kiwi Smoothie (RM8.20) and Tomato Smoothie (RM7.50). I was particularly fond of the unique Tomato Smoothie for its fruity and tangy notes.

We started with John’s homemade beancurd dish of Beancurd Salad (RM19.50). John uses non-GMO soy beans to make his beancurd. Though his beancurd are not the silken and smooth type, it is delicious with an aromatic soy bean note. It has a firm texture and when dressed with the homemade sesame dressing, it is super yummy. There are also crisp greens, cherry tomatoes and onions. Simple, homemade goodness…

When the Beancurd Danjang Soup (RM16.50) arrive, I was salivating at sight. The bubbling pot of Korean bean paste soup emitted a hearty and nutty aroma of the bean paste, tantalizing our tastebud with great effect. The soup was brimming with beancurd, clams, mushrooms, vegetables and more, the flavours were comforting with steamed rice. The soup comes with banchan and really makes a nutritional and well balance meal.

Next up, my all-time-favorite Beancurd Kimchi Soup Set (RM16.50). Robust, piquant and addictive, it is meant for those who love kimchi. The version is here is nicely balanced with good heat, savory and sweet and sour notes. There are lots of kimchi as well as other vegetables and beancurd in the soup which again makes it a nutritional one pot meal on its own with rice and banchan.

B-Station offers a variety of their homemade banchan and these changes daily depending on the fresh ingredients available. John makes his own kimchi using special kimchi fridge which yield consistent quality fermented kimchi under controlled temperature.

For fish lovers, opt for their Korean Fish Set (RM19.50). A hearty combination of Beancurd Danjang Soup with a whole Grilled Sanma or Pacific Saury and banchan. This is value-for-money as one gets to enjoy a whole freshly grilled fish as well as the soup filled with seafood and beancurd. The sanma has a delicate and smooth flesh that is really delicious with steamed rice.

Another favorite Korean dish is Bulgogi. B-Station does theirs with a light twist of Beancurd Bulgogi Set (RM24.50). Served on hot plate, the Bulgogi beef comes with homemade beancurd, sautéed mushrooms, pumpkin and broccoli. Marinated with fruits and other seasoning, the Bulgogi beef is sweet and savory with a lovely umami note. Cook with very little oil, the beef is definitely healthier than most ones I have tried and it equally flavourful and very tender.

If you love spicy food, try their Spicy Cuttlefish (RM16.50). A single serving meal on its own, steamed rice is paired with an unctuous and spicy sautéed cuttlefish with vegetables in a spicy and lightly sweet sauce.

Besides dishes to go with rice, diners should also order B-Station’s Seafood Pancake (RM17.50). A hearty pancake studded with seafood and spring onions, the Pajeon here has a crispy edge with a creamy doughy center. It was generously filled with lots of chopped seafood too. A Must-order here…

Tukbokki (RM12.50) is a classic street food dish in Korea. John makes his own rice cake from scratch regularly to ensure that it is healthier without any preservatives. It has a softer texture compared to those sold by manufacturers. I really enjoyed this version as the thick sweet and spicy sauce with the soft and creamy Tukbokki gave this dish a homemade warmness. It doesn’t have the usual chewiness of the rice cakes because John doesn’t add in any preservatives. This one is a personal favorite of mine.

If diners are with hankering for Western food, they can also choose from a small list of Western dishes prepared by John. B-Station’s hotdog is homemade with lean chicken breast, spices and herbs without any preservatives again. We had their Teriyaki Chicken Hotdog (RM12.80) from their three choices of Italian Rush (RM9.80), Bulgogi Hotdog (RM14.50) and the Teriyaki Chicken Hotdog.

The Teriyaki Chicken Hotdog has chicken sausage topped with sautéed Teriyaki chicken with onions, fresh cucumber, tomatoes and mustard sauce sandwiched in John’s homemade hotdog bun. It is savory with a caramelized sweetness from the homemade Teriyaki sauce. There are also pasta, Grilled Hamburg Steak and Grilled Chicken Steak too in the Western list.

The Jumbo Sausage Set (RM16.80) is perfect for brunch or as light meal. Homemade chicken sausage with Sunny side up egg, mashed potato salad and homemade bread lets diner enjoy their brunch without the guilty. It was a favorite with my little one that day. You may want to let the staff know to not add mustard if it is for your little ones.

B-Station has a solid list of desserts too. From Korean ones to Western desserts, we opted for their homemade Pat Bingsu (RM8.80). The dessert consisted of fine shaved ice topped with creamy and homemade sweet red bean paste and homemade soy bean powder. Even the ice at B-Station is made with special ice maker imported from Korea. This dessert was a big hit with us and our families. It may be simple but we really enjoy the homemade red bean paste that tasted wholesome and not overly sweet. The soy bean powder helps to balance the sweet bean paste and gave this dessert a healthier touch.

It’s no shortcuts when it comes to serving their food at B-Station Korean Restaurant. John lives by the motto of serving diners what he and his family would eat. He goes all out in making sure that everything he serves is homemade and fresh. Prices are very decent considering the quality and portion here at B-Station. I wish I live nearer to B-Station as I would love to enjoy healthy and delicious Korean meal as often as I can as eating healthy plays an important part of our daily lives…
