Umeshu Sushi & Bar @ Glenmarie Industrial Park, Shah Alam

Japanese Cuisine at Affordable Prices!

A recent foodie round up at Umeshu Sushi & Bar had us all very satiated with the very affordable and scrumptious Japanese restaurant discreetly hidden in Glenmarie Industrial Park, Shah Alam. Thanks to dear foodie buddy Yvonne, Umeshu is a real gem that was just waiting to be discovered.

Umeshu Sushi & Bar opened in March 2015. It was a perfect spot as there were no Japanese restaurants nearby and the owners are well-aware that there are colleges nearby and Japanese cuisine is always a crowd pleaser for many. To cater to all the students and those living nearby, the owners made their prices very affordable and yet serves up very delicious and decent Japanese dishes. Umeshu also offers delivery services within the nearby area and college with 1 hour advance order.

Seafood delivery takes place every 2 days to ensure that every item is kept as fresh as possible. The owners also made sure that most of all their sauces and dressing are made in-house such as soy sauce, sweet sauce, sesame sauce and more to keep their dishes as homemade as possible.

The restaurant is decorated with simple and pleasing design. There are booths or regular seating. Since the restaurant has a long space, catering to big or small parties are not an issue too. There is even a lovely long tatami room for privacy.

Moving to serious eats, we had a classic favorite of Edamame (RM3.30) as we try out their Bavaria non-alcoholic malt drink that comes in Pomegranate or Peach. The fizzy malt drink is pretty enjoyable…

Dinner continue to our first appetizer of Jikasei Niku Miso Hiyayakko (RM5.30) or Cold Tofu with Umeshu met Miso. Simple, fresh and easy to enjoy… the flavours are quite intense and vibrant from the soy sauce to miso while the spring onions and tobiko added more textures and flavours.

Japanese salads are often really easy to enjoy. These salads are never heavy and always uses minimal ingredients to showcase the freshness of the seafood that is very often paired with salads. Ours was Soba Avocado Salad (RM10.90), a healthy soba noodle, avocado, corn, seaweed and greens mix paired with creamy dressing.

We also had another appetizer of Salmon Avocado (RM6.90), cubed salmon with creamy cuts of avocado dressed in a tangy and creamy dressing and finished with a sprinkling of shichimi togarashi powder. So delicious!!

Sushi time and these are definitely a crowd-pleaser as we checked out some sushi and maki rolls from Umeshu’s sushi bar. Salmon Zukushi (RM16.90) is faultless, a lovely platter for salmon lovers. Salmon sashimi, salmon sushi and salmon roll with mayo is creamy and delicious. With that price tag, I’ll gladly order two platters for myself.

Another personal favorite of mine is their Aburi Salmon Sushi (RM4.90 for two pieces). Creamy cuts of salmon is lightly brushed with teriyaki sauce, lightly torched and served with pearls of salmon roe and a dab of mayo. Simply scrumptious!

Goka Irodori (RM16.90) is a role one would love when one wants a little of everything in their roll. Sushi roll with pickled daikon radish and cucumber is covered with slices of assorted sashimi, finished with a drizzle of mayo and topped with ebiko.

Another roll to check out would be the house signature roll of Umeshu Special Fried Salmon Roll (RM13.90). Albeit a less healthy version of maki but is yummy as the maki roll has salmon, cucumber and cheese inside, crumbed and fried still crispy outside. A drizzle of sauce and a touch of ebiko sealed the deal. There’s more adventurous rolls to tempt diners with Fire Oyster Roll, King Prawn Roll, Norway Roll, Fire Spider Roll and more.

We edged in slowly to mains and had the Salmon Kobuto Teriyaki (RM10.90) to start. The grilled salmon head has a nice teriyaki glaze. It may need some effort to pick through the head but the fleshy bits are silky smooth and creamy.

Seasonal Pan Fried Salmon Bone is a dish the chef whipped up especially just for us. There is a lovely spicy note to the dish. The salmon bone still has a fair bit of meat on it and we did our best to polish this clean too. The additions of onions and bell peppers with other bits of vegetables made the flavours sweeter. Not in the menu but do ask the waitstaff…

More Yakimono followsw with Ika Maruyaki (RM14.90) or Roasted Squid and Saba Shioyaki (RM14.90). Both nicely grilled and sufficiently satisfying in flavours and textures.

Steak lovers will definitely enjoy the Teppan Gyu Steak (RM18.90). The steak was gorgeously charred and remained tender and juicy. Served with mashed potato, corn and broccoli on a sizzling hot plate, it was certainly a delicious main course. If you prefer your steak a bit more rare, make sure to let the staff know.

We moved on to more classic favorites in Japanese cuisine. We had two tempura dishes of Tempura Moriawase (RM15.90) and Tempura Mantis Prawn (RM8.90). The Tempura Moriawase was a classic mix of fried tempura prawn, capsicum, eggplant, pumpkin and mushroom. Nicely executed with light crispy batter and sweet prawns with various vegetables cooked well.

The Tempura Mantis Prawn were more unique as I haven’t seen this much in Japanese restaurant. Still, I am not complaining as these were decent too with the crispy tempura and tempura sauce.

If there is one thing to order at Umeshu, it’s their rice dishes! We had three and all 3 were indeed awesome in flavours and textures.

Ishiyaki Salmon Tobiko (RM15.90), a hot stone bowl rice topped with salmon, egg, ebiko, spring onion and special sauce. Mixed these all together and it is sublime! Crusty bits of rice coated with egg yolk and lightly cooked salmon, sauce and ebiko is such an amazing dish that I will indeed return for. I had two helpings from this portion because it was just too darn irresistible…

Kamameshi or Kettle Rice, is the traditional Japanese way to prepare rice. The special Kama or iron pot makes a perfect single dish meal as one can also add any other ingredients in and cook them together. Then the rice is usually served in the pot at tableside as it will also keep the rice warm. We had two varieties of Kamameshi of Gomoku Kamameshi (RM20.90) and Unagi Kamameshi (RM29.90).

Gomoku Kamameshi is assorted seafood, chicken, mushrooms, burdock, aburage, spring onions and ebiko while Unagi Kamameshi is Japanese grilled eel with mushrooms, burdock, aburage, seaweed and wasabi. Choosing one is not easy as both are really aromatic, flavourful with crispy bits of the fluffy rice. So choose either one depending on your favorite ingredient and you won’t be disappointed as these make great tummy fillers as well as sharing meal.

Umeshu also has lots noodles dishes from ramen, soba to udon and we tried their signature Ishiyoki Curry Udon (RM10.90). The thick and creamy Japanese curry is moreish, leaning towards more savory than sweet. Just my kind of flavour as I do not enjoy sweet curry. Serving bubbling hot in hot stone bowl, the udon comes with a tempura whole egg, seafood and spring onions. This one is really pretty decent in my books.

We also had a large bottle of Umeshu Wine from Choya, classic Japanese plum wine that the restaurant is named after. Perfect to go with the dishes if you asked me…

We barely covered their menu at Umeshu Sushi & Bar. All of us really thought that the prices are very reasonable for their dishes served and portions are good too. Umeshu definitely serves much credit for their effort in serving up affordable and scrumptious Japanese cuisine. Must-orders for me are their Salmon Avocado, Aburi Salmon Sushi, Teppan Gyu Steak, Ishiyaki Salmon Tobiko and Kamameshi!

Taiko Japanese Cuisine, Shoplex Mont Kiara: Japanese Soul Food

An Authentic Hidden Japanese Gem!

I love what I do. Besides the food, it’s about meeting new people and they in turn become my friends. A good friend of mine that I know through blogging made a trip to the city recently. She called me up and said I am going to bring you to a yummy Japanese restaurant. No further encouragement needed my family and her family met up one Sunday for lunch at Taiko Japanese Cuisine located at Shoplex Mont Kiara.

Now I have been to this restaurant before as it was previously called Ramen Taiko Japanese Cuisine. New owners have taken over the 48 pax restaurant recently in April 2014 and they have also engaged a new chef to lead this rebranded restaurant. Chef Steven Khoo last stint was at the famous Kirishima Japanese Restaurant in Cititel Hotel in Penang, a restaurant famed for their Japanese cuisine. Chef Steven had also previously worked with many acclaimed restaurant groups in Singapore and Bermuda.

Taiko Japanese Cuisine has taken on a new life. Chef Steven is injecting his own touch to the menu with a big bang. He is a chef who believes in making everything from scratch, even down to his own recipe of soy sauce. A quick chat with him only confirmed that Taiko uses his homebrewed soy sauce, fresh wasabi, organic seasoning and no msg. He believes that only the freshest ingredients should be used and is proud to serve his own creations at Taiko Japanese Cuisine.

In keeping with most of the dishes from the previous restaurant with few changes, Taiko’s menu now has a finer quality and also focus on serving up luscious cuts of Sashimi and Sushi among other dishes of Yakimono and Ramen. The restaurant décor remained the same from my previous visit with two sections allowing diners to host private parties or functions. There are quite a collection of Japanese books and newspaper to cater to those who love to read while dining. Taiko Japanese also has a lovely collection of Japanese Sake and beer available.

My little one’s Okosama Chahan Set (RM14.90) from the kids menu arrived first. Definitely a plus point for having kids menu, thus making Taiko a perfect restaurant for family dining. What a feast for D! Fried chicken, hot dogs and French Fries are balanced up with fried rice and miso soup served with Yakult Yoghurt Drink. Needless to say, D polished all these happily. Even the mom has to refrain herself from stealing a few bites here…

Our Sashimi Moriawase (RM48.90) is such a sight to behold. The platter featured the freshest catch available and is served in thick slices. This is such a steal for its value. We all salivated just at the sight even way before we dived in…

The Sashimi Moriawase platter had thick luscious cuts of Salmon, Yellowtail, Seared Tuna, Surf Clam and Octopus with Wasabi. I wanted to literally hog this whole plate to myself. Look at the quality of the seafood. Glistening with freshness, the cuts of salmon and yellowtail are so divine in flavors. Delicate sweetness with firm texture that oozed with creaminess is such a welcoming note. Seared tuna spiced up and dressed with a light sweet soy sauce is very good in flavors. The oceanic flavor of the surf clams are also delicious while the hit of wasabi with fresh octopus tentacles paired like a dream with a tingling sensation.

This plate of Sashimi is unbelievably awesome!

All of us were raving on this platter alone. The quality is top notch and with sashimi, there really is nothing to hide but the freshness and quality speaks for itself… I made a promise to myself to order this when I return and I am definitely not going to share… *wicked smile*

We also shared some house special rolls, a VIP Roll (RM12.90) and a Vegetarian Roll (RM9.90).

The VIP Roll is simply delicious! Prawns, Fish, Avocado are the main filling while a creamy mayo sauce, masago and fried crab stick tops the roll. The roll is cut into four big pieces. There are so many textures and flavors in the roll. A little creamy, sweet and savory with lots of umami flavors, we really enjoyed this roll very much. I would order this again…

The Vegetarian Roll has avocado, asparagus, carrot, cucumber and is wrapped with sweet beancurd, drizzled with mayo and sweet sauce and topped with fried leeks. I liked this roll as there are lots of textures going on with all the different vegetables. The sweet beancurd makes a lovely touch in flavor and texture too. It is a very yummy vegetarian dish.

We moved on to Yakimono Specials. There are many choices and we opted for the following choices that are all nicely grilled and sauced up.

Did I mention that Taiko Japanese Restaurant is non halal? Yep, in full glory are Ozura Bacon (RM6.90), Tomato Bacon (RM6.90), Otate Bacon (RM7.90), Chicken Thigh (RM5.90), Pork Belly (RM6.90) and Chicken Liver (RM4.90). The Yakimono runs from RM4.90 t0 RM7.90 depending on the ingredient.

Honestly, I can’t decide on a favorite so I'll settle for that anything has bacon to be my favorite! Love the popping juiciness of cherry tomatoes with the savory bacon, the creamy quail eggs with salty bacon and the juicy sweet scallops in bacon too. There is a side of sweet sauce to dip these in for extra flavors. Bacon makes everything so awesome… don’t you agree?

The thick cuts of pork belly is nicely grilled and seasoned with layers of yummy fats and lean meat while the chicken thigh is paired with leeks as per traditional recipe. The chicken livers take some getting used to so one will either love it or not. The same sweet sauce is served on the side for dipping. I would have loved more chargrilled colors on these sticks.

We also had one of their dishes that beckon for rice. The Hamachi Kama Picata (RM22.90) is a spicy take on the classic grilled Hamachi Kama. The collar of the yellowtail fish is highly prized for its smooth and creamy flesh that melts lusciously. Normally grilled with salt and ate with a squeeze of lemon, this one is laced in a lightly sweet and spicy sauce with vegetables after being fried. Very enjoyable dish with rice if you are dining alone or in pair…

Ramen is up next and Chef Steven makes everything from scratch except the noodles. Our first one, Kumamoto Ramen (RM19.90) has ramen noodles with pork chashu, bamboo shoots, bean sprout, green vegetables, leeks, egg and sesame seed in a silky creamy white broth.

One sip of the broth and you’ll know it’s been cooked with love for hours. Lots of bones and vegetables go into making the luscious broth that oozed with meaty essence. The savory broth even leaves a sticky sensation on the lips, making it lip-smacking good. The pork chashu is well braised with a delicious tenderness whie the egg is also prepared well as it has the essential molten egg yolk center. It’s a bowl of perfect comfort noodles that is worth slurping for!

The second bowl was the Kimuchi Ramen (RM23.90). As you can see, its laden with loads of seafood and vegetables in a robust kimchi soup based broth. I like the broth as it is very full-bodied in flavors with a piquant tanginess. It’s hearty and spicy, kicking in my addiction for my love for spicy food.

Chef Steven even makes his own ice creams. Such passion and effort deserves a pat on the back as it goes to show how much effort goes into Taiko Japanese Cuisine. Dessert is limited but after what we ate, we could barely fit anymore in our tummies.

He makes these often and that day, we had Sea Salt Ice Cream, Lemon Peel Ice Cream and Green Tea Ice Cream. Truly unique flavors, it’s a hard choice and so we had all three.

The Sea Salt takes some getting used too but I liked it. It’s quite a nice change to taste a salty ice cream instead of a sweet one. My favorite is the Lemon Peel, beautifully lemony and aromatic of citrus notes, it’s also creamy and so fresh tasting. I can taste the bits of lemon peel in this too. The Green Tea is served with red bean paste. It’s more delicate than those on sale and has an earthy soft green tea taste. All three ice creams are RM6 a scoop.

I love the new Taiko Japanese Cuisine. Dishes here taste authentic and comforting. It’s a place where you definitely want to hang out for a meal comfortably. Taiko also has lunch deals that are worth checking out if you are ever in that area. I also found out that Chef Steven also offers Omakase sets with which needs to be pre-ordered in advance.

I’ll be back for more…especially that Sashimi Moriawase!
