The Lobsterman, SS2 Petaling Jaya: King of Crustacean Lobster Special Set Menu!

Celebrating a Birthday with the King of Crustacean!

My family of gluttons loves to celebrate any birthdays in style! This round, it’s my niece’s birthday and she gets to decide what she wants for her special day. When she mentioned lobsters, I think everyone was ecstatically happy, including me! And why not? An extremely great excuse to indulge in the king of crustaceans!

Lobsters being the highly prized and expensive seafood, we thought hard to be reasonable as it can really be expensive for a family of 10 gluttons. My niece suggested The Lobsterman at SS2 since she had a great dinner there previously and with a special set menu, this family of gluttons happily assembled there one evening for the celebration. I was told that The Lobsterman has been around for a while and has been serving many with its value-for-money lobsters. According to the website, The Lobsterman gets its supplies from Hong Kong, probably due to the owner who hails from the country himself.  The restaurant located discreetly behind a row of shop lots along the main road of SS2 is easily located if you know where to look out for the landmark to turn.

The whole décor look decent but definitely worn down over the years. Still, it is commendable for the effort it tries with blue tableclothes with a piece of paper for guests to doodle while they wait for their meal. Nice and bright with plenty of space between tables, there is also wooden picket fence sectioning up the restaurant for some privacy. Grey slates on floors, long blackboard with daily specials and huge tanks of lobsters complete the ambience.

We already knew what we were going to order, The Lobsterman Special Set Menu for two person priced at RM128++ per set. There is also another set for four people priced at RM218++ but we prefer the choices for the first one. It’s really value-for-money since one 550gm lobster is priced at RM98++ a la carte.

RM128++ Lobster Special Set Menu for Two Person:
Half dozen French Baked Escargot or New Zealand Mussels
Two Soups of the Day
One 550g Lobster, cooked to your choice
One Seafood Pasta or Seafood Baked Rice
Two Dessert of the Day
Two Tea or Coffee

Optional to upgrade the size of the lobsters for the set menu. Additional RM20 for 700gm, RM30 for 800gm or RM40 for 900gm lobsters to replace the 550gm.

Though there were only 9 adults and a little one, we went ahead and ordered 5 sets and upgrade all the lobsters to 800gm. Ok, we’re not called gluttons for nothing. We ordered extra appetizers and sides… and even a bottle of wine to celebrate!

Baked Escargot French Style

Oo la la… it’s so tainted with garlic, you’ll scare off vampires and even some love ones! These little snails are baked in a heavenly rich garlic butter sauce that makes us fight for a piece of garlic bread to mop up the sauce. Glad to say we all enjoyed this a lot and the our table was definitely stinking up with loads of garlic breath all round. We polished off 30 pieces of the escargot within minutes!

Soup of the Day

Changes on daily basis, we had mushroom and broccoli soups that evening. Both were creamy and mediocre at best.

Now The Lobsterman aims to please and there is quite an international selection of cooking methods for the luscious crustaceans. From Chinese style to Japanese Sashimi to American and European steamed or baked, there is really something for everyone. There is even an Indian curry or Thai tom yam for spicy fans. Check out their website for their menu.

Tarragon Butter Baked Lobster

We ordered two of this! French style served simply with tarragon butter, the crustaceans was utterly divine and sweet. Its baked just right with a good bite and the meat is delightfully sweet and tender. This one is served with side coleslaw and steamed corn. I love dipping this in the extra butter for a little extra love!

Char-Broiled Lobster

Simply grilled, this one is as original as it gets. Nothing to hide but pure sweet tender lobster flavor in full glory. Hailing from North America, it has a delectable smoky grilled aroma to enhance the meat. This one is not as juicy as the first one but it does have its own charm. Served with coleslaw and corn on the side.

Lobster Thermidor

Ah… the all-time-favorite! I can remember eating this when I was in my early teens where my parents would treat me and the whole clan to a whole lobster Thermidor for a very special occasion. I stole a bite and this was really creamy and cheesy. The white sauce coats chunks of lobster meat to a luscious bite. It didn’t need the butter on the side and you have to eat this while it’s hot for better flavors. If you love velvety and milky cream, you’ll love this classic!

Shelter’s Garlic Lobster

My sister was the only one that went for Chinese style. This was so good, she literally hogged this whole lobster to herself! Whipped up a la Hong Kong style named Typhoon Shelter for its abundance bits of garlic and onion concoction, the pieces of lobster are superb and succulent. It has a good dose of sweet, savory and spicy flavors and while the lobsters are deep fried, there is still a succulent juice oozing from the shells. The bits were so good, we kept stealing the garlicky bits from her plate!

Seafood Pasta

Served with a good dosage of marinara sauce, the pasta had some seafood in it. It’s pretty good with a nice balance of sweet and tangy tomato flavors and pasta was also decent.

Seafood Baked Rice

I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this one so much but I did! Its egg fried rice topped with a white creamy seafood sauce and baked with cheese. I believe that the lovely white sauce takes the cake in this one, making everything savory come together deliciously!

Dessert and Coffee or Tea

Dessert was really simple and nothing to shout about but I was already pleased with the dishes served that it didn’t matter to me. Coffee and tea included to round up the set meal which is really a thoughtful way to end the set menu.

French Garlic Bread (RM5)

Besides the set menu, we ordered two baskets of garlic bread which came all golden brown and toasty. A little over toasted but flavors are good with strong pungent hints of garlic.

Yee Mee with Spring Ginger Sauce (RM8)

Another surprise for us, this simple rendition of braised noodle was divine! Make sure to order this side as the eggy noodles are well braised in the delicious gingery and oniony sauce. The flavors are robust and heavenly as I slurped at the noodles. Everyone raved about this dish and we decided to order another round of it.

In total, we walloped 5 lobsters, 2.5 dozen escargots, 10 bowls of soup, 12 pieces of garlic bread, 3 bowls of pasta, 2 bowls of rice, 2 bowls of noodles, dessert, wine, coffee and tea. Phew… it was indeed a crazy awesome indulgence that night!

We had such a great time that night and the birthday gal was on cloud nine! We actually over ate and the set meal for two was indeed sufficient for regular diners. If you think it is not enough, order an extra lobster to add on which I still think is a great deal for couples intending to splurge on lobsters. You’ll probably pay more for one lobster alone at other fine dining restaurants than paying for the set meal with additional lobster!

Huge thanks to my sister and her family for this lovely dinner! And yes, I forgot to mention that we also polished off a whole birthday cake at the end of the meal…

Ok… I gathered that this is not my usual! Though food seems to fill my obsession mostly, I do love other stuff like any normal female does. Taking a break from my glutton world, I was actually pretty excited when MIVVA sent me a present. It’s like Christmas came early for me…

Listed in no particular order are 7 products, 1 voucher and a token.

b.liv by Cellnique

b.liv Off With Those Heads Blackheads Sebum Gel @ RM139 (30ml) & RM179.90 (45ml)

I used to remove my blackheads with the traditional method of using egg white and cotton pad, then came those stick-on and peel-offs which really has one feeling dry and sticky after using it. There is always the basic squeezing ways but that is fairly painful after a few extractions. Well, I tried b.liv and was quite pleased with the results. The gel only needs to be applied after cleansing on daily basis with a few drops on the affected area. It is quite cooling and what I like most is that after applying it, one can just leave it on for its magic to work.

Beautymate

Purifying and Brightening Nano Essence (Full-sized) @ RM69.90 (30ml)

Asian women tend to favor fairer skin and I am no different. I have used several other whitening products before and could never get much result. I am glad I have another one to try now in this beauty box. Beautymate is made in Taiwan and the essence is white and runny. It is said to brighten up dull skin and since I only tried this a few times, I haven’t really had a chance to see the result. One thing positive is that I have super sensitive skin that will react to quite a lot of skin care products but so far, my skin has been behaving well after using this which already is a good sign. To add further, it smells really nice and light!

O’slee

Rosehip Beauty Solution Advance Formula III @RM59.90 (100ml)

The liquid is colorless and unscented with a watery texture. It absorbs easily and fast upon application and it light with no trace of oil. After application, it does make the skin a little smoother before I apply on the rest of the products and make up.

SF Beauty Skin

Perfect Glow Sunscreen @ RM125 (30ml)
Remover Cleansing Gel @ RM100 (150ml)

The remover cleansing gel is decent as I can easily remove my make up after an evening out. The only setback is my mascara wasn’t completely removed but then again I have yet to find a good cleansing gel that can really remove my mascara. The sunscreen also fared average but because it was a small sachet, it was harder to review this. It would be better if they provide a few sachets for a better review.

Timeless Truth Charcoal Deep Whitening Mask

RM10 per piece

Charcoal does have many benefits! In fact, it is also good when applied for a deep detox on the face. As this is a whitening mask, I feel it’s really suitable for me since I always choose to opt for a fairer complexion. While most mask is plain white, this one has some design on it, something a little different.

Somang Keratin Silk Protein Hair Care

Hair Shampoo @ RM49.90 (620ml)
Hair Pack @ RM49.90 (500ml) & RM79.90 (1000ml)

I have dry and coarse hair so I really tried a lot of products out there to tame my big lioness’ mane. What I like was that there was 10 sachets of Korean hair shampoo and hair pack for the try-out.  After using both together, I can feel my hair texture remains less frizzy and smoother. I also notice a nice sheen on my hair.

Hair Chalk

A little extra fun comes in the form of hair chalk! This is so new to me and I was checking this out when I saw how fun this can be. Great for temporary functions and parties, get creative and chalked your hair simply by rubbing the chalk on dry hair. One can also dip the chalk in water and mix the colors for extra effects before rubbing in the colors on the hair…super fun… I cannot wait to try this!

Strip, Ministry of Waxing

There was also a gift voucher worth RM32.50 for a waxing treatment. Doubt I would use this as I am quite a chicken when it comes to waxing… however, this would make a nice pressie for my sister.

SHUCKED, BIG @ Publika: New Fuel For Love with Chef Christian Recomio

Simple Ingredients but Shuckingly Awesome!

Let’s not complicate things! Keeping things simple and letting the ingredients shine is what SHUCKED is all about. From my previous visit here, it was like revisiting an old flame. SHUCKED has recently expanded their menu to incorporate more delish European dishes to their list of gorgeous imported seafood from international waters. SHUCKED is also pleased to have Chef Christian Recomio on board. Chef Recomio, owner for Moonfish Café in UK, has created several new dishes at Shucked showcasing the glorious kaleidoscope of oceanic treasures brought in by Southern Rock Seafood.

Our evening at SHUCKED was indeed a pleasure! Though SHUCKED is literally a bar that occupies a corner in B.I.G market at Publika, I like the concept. The casual and raw concept allows one to enjoy its offering mimicking European marketplace where grabbing a good bite doesn’t mean one has to be in a fancy restaurant.

Oysters are simply a must and one can certainly choose from several varieties from all over the world. To add on to the aphrodisiac oysters, there are beautiful fishes available whole or sliced among some shellfish.  Expect glorious catch of Atlantic Salmon, Scottish Salmon, Ocean Trout, Rainbow Trout, Seabass, Mackerel, Smoked Salmon and more. Shellfish lovers will also enjoy sweet Atlantis Prawns, Australian Kinkawooka Mussels, various caviars and more. The seafood arrives twice a week at Shucked so make sure to head there either on Tuesday or Friday.

Trio of Irish Oyster Shooters

Our evening took off with SHUCKED’s signature item of the much worshipped oysters! In fact, a trio of them all served on ice with shooters.  Trio of Irish Oyster Shooters is one of the latest additions to the menu. Featuring a troika of shooters of Bloody Mary, Passion Orange & Balsamic and Vichyssoise served with Irish Premium oysters, the pairing will ignite your senses with its flavors. Seen here is three servings of oyster shooters.

I never expected to like Vichyssoise but the cold potato and leek soup exuded exceptional concentrated umani flavor notes. Ultra smooth and creamy, the chilled soup enhanced the chilled briny oyster like a dream.  The burst of saltiness in the mouth was finished with a creamy sensation of leeks. Working my way next is a refreshing tangy Passion Orange & Balsamic liquid contrasting boldly with the salty creamy oysters. It’s a brilliant move to use passion fruit as the balance of sour and sweet really harmonized the mollusk beautifully. Finishing off the trio is a virgin Bloody Mary, proving that tomatoes are a classic with oysters. My favorite of the threesome is definitely the Vichyssoise!!

A first for me, Scandinavian cuisine was always on my list to try. When I was presented with the smorgasbord of Smørrebrød, I wanted to sing like Julie Andrews on a hill. The tasting platter was a jigsaw of colors that immediately also caught the attention of many passersby.  Smørrebrød is a Scandinavian open faced sandwich. At SHUCKED, five variations of the rye bread sandwich is crowned with various seafood and condiments. Each Smørrebrød is ordered separately.

Atlantis Prawns

A salad of greens, raw onion and rye bread provides a platform for sweet peeled Atlantis prawns, boiled egg and wasabi aioli. It’s a fairly light sandwich with delicate flavors but leaves a light tingling horseradish sensation at the end. The raw onions also provided a pungent cut to liven up the smoky deep rye notes.

Salmon Tartare

A rich oily fish like salmon is perfect for a tartare. Salmon is minced up and brighten with loads of flavors sitting on luscious cream cheese and rye bread. The omega rich fish is robust in flavors of tingling mustard and salty capers. The soft but lightly firm texture of the fish is jazzed up with crispy bits of aromatic fried shallots, providing a surprising texture to the tartare. It’s creamy and salty all summed up!

Smoked Mackerel Pate

The least pretty of the lot, the flavors more than made up for its look. A rather good slathering of smoked mackerel pate made in house by Chef Recomio dictates what a good pate should be creamy, smooth and filled with a good level of flavors. It is quite ordinary but when paired with sweet intense onion marmalade and tangy small cornichons, the taste is really sumptuous in every bite! This is one of my favorite smørrebrød.

Pickled Herring “Roll Mop”

You’ll have to love tangy and sour flavors to like this one. Definitely a Scandinavian favorite, pickled herring is a delicacy to us but rather common to Scandinavians. The pickled herring is cured in vinegar, changing its soft texture to a rather dense and firm flesh. This smørrebrød has an strong sour flavor punched up with dill and horseradish. Bits of crispy chips are crushed and sprinkled on the sandwich.

SHUCKED Special Smørrebrød

The priciest of the lot, it is lavish by the opulence of creamy salty smoked ocean trout, Irish creamy oysters, globules of ocean trout caviars and a lemon aioli. It is concentrated oceanic flavors that will definitely glamourized your senses. The burst of salty roes are literally heavenly as one gets hit by salty creamy almost fishy note. The plump oysters surprisingly partnered well with smoked ocean trout while the citrusy aioli provides a creamy edge to the sandwich. It is definitely one of the most extravagant sandwiches I have enjoyed! Still drooling at the thoughts of the flavors….

Grilled Fresh Fish of the Day

SHUCKED also offers a simple rendition of Grilled Fresh Fish of the Day with diners choosing their choice of fish in season. Our Grilled Sea Bass served with herb butter and grilled vegetables were as good as it gets as the sea bass had really sweet delicate flesh with a crispy skin. The herb butter did justice by just lightly flavoring the fish and letting it shined on its own sweet original flavors. Grilled Rainbow Trout was also available that day.

Fresh Herring

This one is designed for the bold as raw herring is served with fresh chopped onions, brown bread and butter. The fish takes some getting used to and it unlike other raw fishes we enjoyed as sashimi. It has a stronger fish note and the flesh is a little creamy. I understand why raw onions is served as it cuts into the flavors of the fish to make it less pungent. I think I will still stick to my favorite pickled herring!

Besides the above, there are also mussels cooked in various styles, raw and smoked fish and a beautiful Smoked Haddock Chowder.

Less is more. The team at SHUCKED definitely understand that. Chef Recomio’s creations are clean and enchanting, introducing us to the cold waters of European cuisine. Fuel for Love, the dishes represents an aura of romance, perfect for a little love at the end of the evening. SHUCKED is also introducing lunch specials and one can expect more delectable seafood to show up in its menu.

SHUCKED and loving every minute of it!
